Absolutely love Master of Reality. Went to a friend's place to hang out, she had some records and I put on the Sabbath album, only really knowing the three hits from Paranoid, and from the instant that Sweet Leaf riff came blasting out I knew I had been missing out on some incredible music (this was probably ten years ago)

If you've listened to all their studio albums, you should check out "The Last Stage" album, which was a collection of unreleased studio songs from 1979 to 1985.
Absolutely love the Overkill Rewind videos as the honourable mentions always introduce me to amazing albums I never knew about and currently have the Leaf Hound one blasting in the background. So thank you Martin! And I personally love the retro television set video style!
Master of Reality definitely. After Forever with the backward gong and all those great riffs. I'm going to listen to it tonight in the car. Thanks, Martin!
When Alice Cooper hit it big with Billion Dollar Babies, "Halo of Flies" was released as a single (the full 8min!) in Holland, and it reached No 5 in the popcharts!
I'm going to investigate Budgie immediately. Heard of them, of course, but hadn't really listened to them that much. As a San Antonio metalhead, I have no excuse.
All of those albums are some of my favorite of all time! What a great fuckin' year for heavy music! And all of those bands mentioned in the top 5 ( maybe apart from Budgie ) have been responsible a lot of different sub genres that are still going to this day!!!! I love Led Zep IV but 'Master Of Reality' is my favourite Sabbath album full stop. I also think 'Meddle' by Pink Floyd is far better to some of the top 5 (I personally love it).
Meddle is brilliant, with the awesome and beautiful "Echos"... This period of the Floyd is often overlooked, but,is without a doubt the launchpad for what was to follow. Certainly my fave era of the Floyd ❤💙💜
You all should do 1974 eventually. No Sabbath but you have albums from BOC, Aerosmith, Budgie, Thin Lizzy, Rush, Scorpions, two from Deep Purple, Queen, and Kiss, and my all-time favorite prog album in Red by King Crimson. Great content as always!
Aerosmith, Kiss are weak pop bands. Rock is the last word I would use to describe either. Aerosmith both in song and stage presence were a cheap Rolling Stones cover band and Kiss were the Mutant Ninja turtles in drag.
@@tutenvanman2715 Very well said.I had one Aerosmith album. I might have played once or twice and never went back to it again.Bit ordinary to me and sold it.Kiss on the other hand I never bought anything by them and the concert I saw they were terrible and walked out well before the end.
No quibbles with this list! Although most of us probably never need to hear half of LZIV again, it must be recognized for what it is - a pillar of 20th century rock music. Of the two Alice Cooper albums in the running for the list, I'm glad Killer got the edge. It's just slightly more sinister - while simultaneously more accomplished - than its predecessor. If not exactly 'heavy metal' per se, it's certainly very heavy in spirit and intent. And Master Of Reality - what can one say? It's the embodiment of heaviness, a lynchpin in the metal milieu. I *am* a bit surprised ZZ Top's debut wasn't mentioned at all, though.
Gotta love Martin P and the rest of the team on Banger 😁 (even though Martin thinks Paranoid is "cold and clanky" and doesn't like Catch the Rainbow) Most of my favorite albums from 71 are progressive rock albums. I haven't heard the Budgie album, so I think I'll check it out. 👍 I do miss seeing Sam though, hope everyone is doing as well as possible! 😥 Thanks for the videos!
I second @Martin Popoff on this: I heard about the Chris Pike books because Martin mentioned them on the Pete Pardo RUclips show, and I contacted Chris directly, and got the books online (signed by Ray Phillips!). He has new editions of those books, and I got the first two, and they are, as Martin points out, comprehensive.
Two albums that just came to mind that were not talked about is Operation by the brilliant german band Birth Control and the self titled Dust album. How these albums are still overlooked is beyond my comprehension. Both of them are essential!
You gained my respect when you mentioned the first Glastonbury ( fayre) as it was called. The highlight was the set by Mighty Baby which has just been found ( in california) and released last year.
It is difficult to define exactly what makes something heavy metal or hard rock at such an early date but an album I would like to have seen mentioned is the masters apprentices choice cuts album. Just to include some Australian content.
Good album indeed Jamie ! More people should and would be very interested in Masters Apprentices.Good albums they made and I recommend this band no doubt !!
Really can’t go wrong with anything from Master Of Reality. Songs like Into The Void, Children Of The Grave, and others are some of my favorite Black Sabbath songs.

Love Killer, Love Master, outside of When the Levee breaks I have no desire to hear 4 again. Purple MK 2 will always remain awesome. Nazareth is great to. Great vid!
Fireball deserved higher rating, it's Gillan's favorite and features on its title-track the first speed metal double-bass of all time. First record King Diamond and Yngwie actually bought, if I'm not mistaken too.

I wonder....are the people who voted for Aqualung the same people who hate the fact that they won for best hard rock/metal performance against Metallica?
Did you mean "voted against"? I know there was a lot of "they're not even heavy metal!" when they won the Grammy, despite them (Aqualung in particular) being massively important to the development of metal music.
You mentioned on Pete's show that you don't like Stairway to Heaven. I wonder why you didn't mention that in this video when you spoke about Led Zeppelin IV?
Yeah, that was the obvious choice for #1. There's a pretty good argument to be made that the rest of those albums aren't even heavy metal, but obviously we're still at the very beginning of things here and don't have that many choices.
