Surprised to see GnR in here as I thought it was a list of heavy/thrash metal. Does anyone else just love the crappy production of 80s (thrash) metal records?
I would label GNR as hard rock, not metal, but YOU, Sam Dunn, listed them as a contender on the video that announced the polls for the best metal albums of 1987. Since you made that album a metal contender, I put it at #1. Otherwise, I would've picked Anthrax's Among the Living as #1 metal album. So all you people who are negating Appetite's metal status, don't blame the voters; blame Sam Dunn (whom I respect, BTW, but HE DID list GNR's A4D as a metal contender, not me).

I mentioned Taking Over from Overkill in a comment above a couple years back, but yes, Pleasures From The Flesh is another classic. Gary Holt is up there with Hetfield as a riff writer, no doubt. The Ultra-Violence and Persecution Mania are also killer, ‘87 ruled for thrash.
A few killers that I haven't seen mentioned or mentioned much: Bulldozer - IX Carnivore - Retaliation Coroner - RIP Infernal Majesty - None Shall Defy Running Wild - Under Jolly Roger Sarcofago - INRI Slaughter - Starppado One of my absolute favorite years in metal.
Relax folks, don't get so wound up and take other people's best of lists so seriously. As always, these lists are subjective and at the end of the day, there really is no "best", it's just about what your, their, my favorite records are, but I digress. On another note, Jeff Becerra was still delivering vocals and growling just like Chuck at that time(or vice versa) Obviously they had very similar vocal styles and voices, just saying. But between Scream Bloody Gore and Eyes of Horror, well yeah, Chuck definitely created the stronger record that year IMO, and a hugely important one at that. All in all, great video and albums! DC
Hi guys, just to make the point that for the Legacy Sam mentions it's the only Testament album that Steve Souza has song writing credits on. But there are certainly others, Souza contributed lyrics to The Formation of Damnation and The Dark Roots of Earth. Chuck Billy tends to write lyrics with him.
I'd like to paraphrase the video: "The rest of Appetite For Destruction doesn't really hold up like the big three hits. FOUR AND A HALF STARS!!1!one!" Thank christ Martin Popoff reviewed '77. My personal top 5 metal albums for 1987, in no order: 1. U.D.O.- Animal House 2. Helloween- KotSK pt. 1 3. Anthem- Bound To Break 4. Motorhead- Rock 'n' Roll 5. Whitesnake- 1987 (argue all you want about how this album isn't metal, but holy shit John Sykes is on fire.) Hon. mention: King Diamond- Abigail
Excellent choice. If it were a top 10, I might also shove Loudness' Hurricane Eyes, Racer X's Second Heat, and Black Sabbath's The Eternal Idol in there somewhere.
I was getting anxious when I didn't see Among the Living in the first four, and I didn't expect GnR at all...had me worried. Anthrax is still my favorite band, so a big fuck yeah for it being 1987's best.
FINALLY A FIRST 5 SKULLS ALBUM!!!!! As I was watching at first I was thinking "I wonder if there will ever be an album that Sam will give 5 stars to." I agree that Among The Living is a 5 star album. And about GNR even if its not metal, I still wanted to hear Sams take on it. Love this format! Can't wait for more. Do more of them. If its by year, maybe it can be extended to top 10 so more people can get their top choice in, just split the video into 2 parts. And I also would like to hear what Sams opinion of his top album. Reviewers choice, if you will.
My personal top 5 from 87: 1- Death - Scream Bloody Gore 2- Voïvod - Killing Technology 3- Sepultura - Schizophrenia 4- D.R.I. - Crossover 5- Overkill - Taking Over Now I know it's a very death/thrash-oriented list but those are my favorite metal subgenres, so it's only natural for me.
1. The Eternal Idol, Black Sabbath 2. The House of the blue Light, Deep Purple 3. Dream Evil, Ronnie Dio 4. Appetite..., Guns and Roses 5. Keeper of seven keys... Helloween
can't complain about the list since is popular vote... but c'mon Sam that review fro "keeper" was quite unfair. (even tho is your opinion therefore there's no "fair, its just how i feel")
Carlzdash I second your feeling. keeper is the most important record on power metal. period. I know Sam is not a fan of power metal; but hey come on! maybe being bias there?
Carlzdash sure that's my point as well. out those 5 I will argue keeper and scream have the most legacy. But hey it's just a popular vote and his opinion so no blame to anybody.

Seems that everyone forgot the trashalbum of the year in1987. Exodus with Pleasures of the flesh?!
Hail Exodus
Candlemass Nightfall for sure! Plus Armored Saint Raising Fear, think this was my favorite year for metal releases.
Was that picture of Steve Sousa from those "Heavy Metal" trading cards that were sold around 1990 for a short period of time?
akopciuch That was a thing?
Yep, that's how great metal was back in those days. So many magazines and merch, mtv, underground local radio stations everywhere.
Even though I was born in 87, Among the Living is probably one of my favorite thrash albums. When I think of thrash, Anthrax always comes to mind.
what a crime!! Where's Sodom P.M?
Wilbeerthoven And Kreator's Terrible certainty? No German bands, no Coroner? Wtf?
localescariaco I wore terrible certainty out. flawless...what great times....17 years old....
Helloween is german. But I miss the german thrashers too.
A few killers that I haven't seen mentioned or mentioned much:
Bulldozer - IX
Carnivore - Retaliation
Coroner - RIP
Infernal Majesty - None Shall Defy
Running Wild - Under Jolly Roger
Sarcofago - INRI
Slaughter - Starppado
One of my absolute favorite years in metal.
The lack of King Diamond really chaps my ass....
1 The Legacy
2 Keeper of the Seven Keys
3 Among the Living
4 Abagail
5 The Ultra Violence
The rappers Anthrax over King "fuckin" Diamond? No way
Totally agree
once again man, great review and holy shit I remember pumuling my family's ears with that anthrax and testimony album!! great channel keep it Up!
Great job Sam, good to see you talking about classic albums, please more videos like this
I wish "Abigail" and "Hall of the Mountain King" had made the list.
Among the living is one of my favorite metal albums ever
I'd like to paraphrase the video: "The rest of Appetite For Destruction doesn't really hold up like the big three hits. FOUR AND A HALF STARS!!1!one!" Thank christ Martin Popoff reviewed '77.
My personal top 5 metal albums for 1987, in no order:
1. U.D.O.- Animal House
2. Helloween- KotSK pt. 1
3. Anthem- Bound To Break
4. Motorhead- Rock 'n' Roll
5. Whitesnake- 1987 (argue all you want about how this album isn't metal, but holy shit John Sykes is on fire.)
Hon. mention: King Diamond- Abigail
Excellent choice. If it were a top 10, I might also shove Loudness' Hurricane Eyes, Racer X's Second Heat, and Black Sabbath's The Eternal Idol in there somewhere.
all tracks on appetite rock
don't know which tracks don't hold up
great vid, i love these "best of"
No King Diamond No Sepultura!
REALLY like this new format. Keep it up guys.
King Diamond Abigail is my favorite.
I was gonna bring up Transcendence, but it came out in 88! Still, hope one day you guys will spend a minute on this album. It’s incredible
And Candlemass - Nightfall?
I still cannot believe that you guys skipped one of the arguably biggest years of thrash, 1986.
Without watching, I'm going to guess Anthrax: Among the Living.
I was getting anxious when I didn't see Among the Living in the first four, and I didn't expect GnR at all...had me worried. Anthrax is still my favorite band, so a big fuck yeah for it being 1987's best.
DEATH: SCREAM BLOODY GORE IS A MASTERPIECE ( along with Leprosy ),.
Same Dunn knocks it out of the ballpark once again! Double horns held high and two thumbs up! The male Penelope spheeris is pure genius!
overkill - taking over
king diamond - abigail
A thorough review and very well done. Learned that Sam is a 74 generation like me he he he. Banger delivering good stuff as usual. \m/
HELL-O-WEEEEEEEEEN
Where's King diamond Abigail and candlemass nightfall ??
I'm surprised Banger only has 69k subscribers. Love the shirt.
def leopards hysteria was the number one in 1987
Def Leppard Hysteria might have topped the charts but it's a stretch calling it metal.
The first three Def Leppard lps were the best
It was released in August of 87, but it really didn’t hit its stride in the charts until 88.
Steve Clarke was a beast
My personal top 5 from 87:
1- Death - Scream Bloody Gore
2- Voïvod - Killing Technology
3- Sepultura - Schizophrenia
4- D.R.I. - Crossover
5- Overkill - Taking Over
Now I know it's a very death/thrash-oriented list but those are my favorite metal subgenres, so it's only natural for me.
Awesome shirt, Faith no More is an insane awesome band, specially in that album!!
1. The Eternal Idol, Black Sabbath
2. The House of the blue Light, Deep Purple
3. Dream Evil, Ronnie Dio
4. Appetite..., Guns and Roses
5. Keeper of seven keys... Helloween
GNR are not metal and never were.. wtf?
GNR are poser!
GNR were and are always Hard Rock and not Metal ... just like AC/DC
Couldn’t agree more! Compared to the other albums listed here, just 2nd rate 70s rehash. With some of the worst rock singing EVER!
Adi Ibukic bruh they’re glam metal
@@THEshaggyrogers which aint even metal LOL
I fucking love this fucking channel.
imo:
King Diamond Abigail
Testament the Legacy
Anthrax Among the Living
Pentagram Day of Reckoning
Coroner RIP
Nice Faith No More shirt. Faith No More is awesome.
can't complain about the list since is popular vote... but c'mon Sam that review fro "keeper" was quite unfair. (even tho is your opinion therefore there's no "fair, its just how i feel")
Carlzdash I second your feeling. keeper is the most important record on power metal. period. I know Sam is not a fan of power metal; but hey come on! maybe being bias there?
well of course it's biased, it's his opinion. I just think it should've gotten more credit for relevancy, even if Sam didn't like the genre
Carlzdash sure that's my point as well. out those 5 I will argue keeper and scream have the most legacy. But hey it's just a popular vote and his opinion so no blame to anybody.
