This version of JCS still gives me chills all these years on 🤩 Also, just a point…this was never supposed to be a full theatrical production but more of a concert-style production and it was achieved brilliantly.
I saw thus production in Brisbane. I still remember how superb it was. The whole cast brought their A+ game, and John was outstanding, both vocally and emotionally. He can't perform any other way.
Saw this production With my late mother (she was a massive John Farnham fan) besides John and Jon most of the cast were some of the best and biggest and best known singers in Australian record and concert industry
Damn I didn't want that to stop. I am not a religious person, but I can see the passion, anguish and pain that the musical of JCS was trying to get across through song. Just brilliant. Saw it live with John in the 90s and love to this day. Thank God for the internet as I get to experience over and over again. We love John.
Thank you for coming to the defence of John in this video production, he is brilliant in everything he does...period. maybe the critics should allow John into their heart and they would have more love in this world. That's what John does, he brings joy and love to everyone listening, what is there to criticise there. Thanks guys for a great reaction. Love watching your John vids, it is what made me subscribe. Keep up the great work and enjoy. Happy New Year.
For those overseas (or too young) who didn't know this cast. Lets run a few OTHER names by you, like Jon Stevens and John Farnham aren't enough... Angry Anderson as Herod. Formerly Rose Tattoo lead singer and a successful solo career. Order of Australia Medal. Kate Ceberano as Mary. Former lead singer of I'm Talking and backup singer for The Models. 11 platinums and 8 golds. Order of Australia medal. Personal note her dad Tino taught my brother martial arts. Russel Morris as Simon the Zealot. Famous for "I am the real thing". 5 top 10 singles, ARIA hall of fame. Order of Australia Medal. John Waters. Pontius Pilate. Over 50 Films, over 50 TV series including 18 years of Play School, All the rivers run, All Saints and Offspring. He started in Theatre including roles like JCS, Hair and Godspell. The 1970's version wasn't bad either. Stevie Wright. Lead singer of the Easybeats. Famous for "Friday on my mind", "She's so Fine" and "Evie". Jon English. All together Now (TV) and Pirates of Penance (over 700 times) HMS Pinafore, Spamalot, The Mikado. Much missed. Rory O'Donoghue, most famous as Thin Arthur from "The Aunty Jack Show". Marcia Hines. John Paul Young "I hate the music", "Love is in the air". Reg Livermore. Michael Caton from "The Castle", Doug Parkinson. They did alright ;)
This production was an enormous success with many added shows to try and meet the demand. I just looked up the album and it went 4x platinum, stayed at number 1 for 10 weeks, and was the biggest selling album of the year in Australia. The public loved John in the role, but the whole cast was also great.
You are right Susie, about John never sings even his own songs the same way. John has even said himself that everytime he sings he lives in the moment of the song and what ever emotion he feels he will sing to that emotion, he feels something different everytime and therefore his songs are slightly different, which is why it is good to see multiple different versions of the same song from John, because even the audience take away a special moment from each performance. I am glad he sings them differently, because at least he is giving you a part of him in every performance, he is not just singing the words for the sake of singing those words. It is not routine for John, it is an experience everytime. Love it.
The emotion that all the cast, not just John put into this whole show was amazing, there is an interview with Kate Ceberano (Mary Magdalen) out there somewhere where she says the only direction the cast got was to sing everything as if they were asking a question, I think they all nailed it. Thankyou for reacting.
I was at this show. The whole concert blew me away. It's my favourite musical and to have such a great cast with fantastic. Thank you for reviewing it.
When this show started its run, there was a few seconds of total silence when Jesus and Judas are facing each other. Without fail someone (or more) would yell out “YOU SEXY BEAST!)” or along those lines (at Jon Stevens, man he had the vibe) so they had to add a few beats & hums of music to fill the silence…..it worked to stop the yelling.
Thanks for sharing that. That's so hilarious 😂... I think they got it right to remove the total silence in this song. I'm surprised how silent the audience was during parts in 'The Temple' and 'The Crucifixion'.
I've seen and heard several performances of Jesus Christ Superstar, and there are always different approaches and interpretations. Quite often Ian Gillan is cited as the "best" Jesus, or there'll be others who prefer Ted Neeley (from the movie). The thing is, they are not carbon copies, and each performer brings their own approach, and that's the same with John. They are all amazing singers, and I think it's wonderful that we can see and hear so many interpretations that all move you in different ways.
I definitely admire your logic 😊. I'm sure a lot of us would be guilty of having our favourite Jesus/Judas/Mary, etc, or our favourite version of "Gethsemane", "Everything's Alright", etc (raises hand up 😂). It can be hard to have an open mind that all versions are very good, just done in a different way.
Thankyou for reacting to this - i hadn't heard the last supper before- so powerful- yes! I believe they do "level up" when performing amongst so much talent ( all the others, but John's already "up there "!!)😅😊❤
I think in John's case, he's considerate of the person he is singing with, in regards to how far he would "level up". With Jon Stevens, John definitely goes up to his maximum level 😊..
Jane again. Just to be clear - I love this concert and John Farnham's portrayal here. The comment was to give some background that Farnham's portrayal isn't everyone's favourite, and in the end, we actually got some thoughtful comments from Travis and Suzi.. Coming up next - The Arrest.
Whoever wrote that John 'over sang' or changed it to suit himself is crazy. The Last Supper Jesus knew who would betray him and that his Apostils would not stay awake and watch over him, John's performance is brilliant... Remember He was a man...and felt all the feelings of betrayal, fear, and despair, but John's portrayal of Jesus is the Best of them all.
I would also include that humans have flaws as well. John Farnham's Jesus does have a bit of a temper (he's immediately angry with Judas), which doesn't make him terribly nice, but it's a flaw some of us have.
@@selinacastelow2514 I agree however Jesus was a 'man' not a God he experienced all the human feelings including 'anger' but he also knew who would betray him etc...He even felt 'fear' when he asked God to "let this poison cup pass' but in the end he surrendered to God to save mankind.
Having known a couple of critics from the 1970's in Melbourne, i can assure you that it was very rare for any woman to get a favourable critique from either of them, and both of them were scathing of any male who refused their advances. One of them was a celabrated movie critic who constantly bragged about all the careers he had destroyed of " straight " men ( he hated all women ) and also how he destroyed the rock bands who refused to take him on as their manager. Personally , when acting in the theatre we had a situation whereby the local critic watched the play up until the interval and then went to dinner. She gave us an okay critique up to the interval, and then panned everything afterwards......which she NEVER seen. Must have been a bad night in the restaurant ? lol
Perhaps it was people comparing John Farnham with Trevor White, who was Jesus in the 1973 production. He had a much smoother, more melodic voice which would have conveyed more of Jesus’ bewilderment and sorrow at his betrayal. John Farnham’s is anger. Both good, and I love John, but Trevor White’s was a more nuanced performance.

Yes, it was fabulous. I attended one of the shows. I believe the production was referred to as being "in the round".

John was in musical theatre decades before this. Met his wife in a show.
At the very very beginning of his career he was in JCS.
Damn I didn't want that to stop. I am not a religious person, but I can see the passion, anguish and pain that the musical of JCS was trying to get across through song. Just brilliant. The level of musicianship is 100%

It was the most amazing show Kate cerebrano
Travis had summed up the apostles well at start - they are meant to be drunk, so they would definitely be swaying around with their fellow buddy 🤣..

Don't let em fall out suzi 😉🍒
Need to cover that
Hope you listened to Kate Ceberano as well. Excellent
Yes, they have seen 'Everything's Alright'. Both the Hey Hey It's Saturday one and the one from this concert.

You guys should react to baby yaga by slaughter to prevail
I would LOVE to see you guyz view, we all die young by steel dragon/steel heart
Who are you two? Why are you commenting on artists? What level of skill do you possess to do so?
I don't think Travis and Suzi read these comments... but on behalf of them, they are heavy metal rock singers.
@@selinacastelow2514 Hi this is GTO they do not read these comments
