A very good tutorial on propagating parsley, my favourite to flavour soups or salads. I like the tip of using hot water to germinate the seeds faster but at a lower survival rate. 👍👍👌👌
hot water treatment is a normal horticultural procedure and does not result in lower survival rates if done correctly. in between scenes the two pots switch left to right, but youbcan see the hot water treatment pot had more seedlings and taller. look at the colors of the pots
Thank you for sharing, I'm exited about growing my own Parsley and I hope it will work despite coming winter.. Do I water them with hot water only the first time, yes?
We store them in paper bags, some people store them in the refrigerator. However soaking them in water (24 hours) before planting is the best way to speed up germination.
We use a normal compost mix (or potting soil). It has a little slow release fertiliser already in it. We do usually sift a fine layer on top before we sow the seeds as this gives better contact with the soil.
None of my parsley germinated. I water sprayed them 3 to 4 times a day. But the soil on the top kept drying. I live in Colorado, a dry climate, maybe that's the problem?
Maybe keep them in a shaded position, and plant the seeds in early spring. You might need to water more. Even try sitting the seed tray in a shallow dish of water until the seeds germinate. The other possibility is that the seeds were old and not viable. They only last around 2 years in good conditions.
Hello Johnny A, On 20th March 2021, I purchased the coriander, parsley, chives and basil to grow my own seeds. I was specifically told by a member of staff as long as I have small pots, moist soil and indoor sunlight. My seeds would be germinated. However, I was not told that I had to water them and ensure the seeds are at the top. Thanks to my neighbour advice and your videos instructions. On 1st March 2021, I rectify the coriander seeds to a bigger pot placing the seeds on top and add water to the soil. The instructions states the seeds should be germinated within 5-7 days. This Friday, I have to purchase the basil, chives and parsley seeds and restart them again in small pots. I accidentally place the seeds somewhere in the middle ground. I would like to ask what happens if the coriander does not grow? Do you recommend to water coriander once a week during the germination? Also, I do not want to transfer to a bigger pot yet? Thank you. Love from the UK. God bless.
All of those seeds need to be kept moist. AND we cover all of those seeds with a very thin layer of potting mix, often sifted over the top. Just enough to cover the seeds. If the seeds are sown to deep they will have trouble germinating. We have a video on growing Basil from seed coming very soon. Keep the Coriander moist, but not wet at all times. They also need a warm position to germinate ...
@@johnnyAGardening I'll make sure the soil is not too wet. The coriander seed is been placed at the top and well covered by some of the soil. In the UK, the weather is warm/cold. The coriander is placed on the window sill so the plant will have direct sunlight. The windows are no longer too cold. Thank you Johnny A
@@johnnyAGardening Hello buddy, the good news. My coriander did germinate and grow well. The bad news I noticed all around the side and nothing in the middle. I tried to add a bit of soil so the leaves can be intact and healthy. Hasn't worked out well but the coriander is not completely dead. Waiting for Parsley, Basil and Chives to germinate and grow well. I water them once a week. Thank you buddy
How often do you need to water parsley? It's better to soaked the seeds for 24h or to put the hot water? This will be my first time growing a plant from seeds and i'm a little worried:(
Either soaking or hot water will work. Keep the seeds moist until the germinate, however not wet and soggy. It is best to keep young seedlings moist as well. Once planted out, try not to let the soil dry completely as this can tend to cause the parsley to bolt.
Shift them on a cool day, water the day before, this will help the soil stay around the roots. Lift them out with a flat stick, even a fork. Replant immediately and water in with a liquid seaweed fertiliser.
I thought that with parsley you actually need to leave them in a cold place, not warm. I planted some parsley in the garden in mid summer, not a single one germinated, in late spring a few have germinated
Everywhere you search different people will tell you to sow seeds at different depths. On the back of the seed packet it says to sow at 1 cm, and then other places say half an inch, but you say to sprinkle a small amount of soil on the seeds. For me this is the most difficult part of growing plants - getting the right depth, it's very confusing.
That is a good comment, and prompts us to make a video on sowing seeds. The general rule is sow 3 times the depth of the seed.So if a seed is 2mm thick, then sow it 6mm deep. HOWEVER, not true for all seeds, some need light to germinate, others are better sown deeper. We will try to do an in depth video on this.....Thanks for the prompt. We had a quick look and found recommendations that range from from a light covering to 1/4 inch (6mm) to 1/2 inch (12mm) for parsley, so we get the confusion....
Germinating them was the easiest part, sprinkle them in a pot, spray with water, cover with a plastic bag (for greenhouse effect), but then after they grew to an inch size they all died. Parsley, basil, onions. Just dried up... Idk if I overwatered them? Was it too hot? Too cold? Too dark?
Without seeing them and the conditions it is difficult to know what happened. A few thoughts - Overwatering can be a problem. Besides that, letting the soil dry out, or very hot temperatures are also possible also very cold or frosts, Pests and and disease can be present. With Onions, we sow them directly into the garden. Also once they germinate, you do need to remove the plastic and keep them in a part shaded position.
We usually use the liquid seaweed every 2 - 4 weeks, and water as need between. Another good fertiliser is the fish liquid fertiliser, once every 6 - 8 weeks.
Oh god so you need to sprinkle the seeds as opposed to planting 3 seeds per pot? 🤦🏻♀️ I basically planted 3 parsley seeds per pot and now they came out and then I went and separated the seedlings and put 1 stem in each pot and I was planning to give them to friends. ROFL!!!! Now what do I do? I can't possibly combine them all over again in one pot, can I? Also, if I keep 1 stem in 1 pot, is there a chance it will become bushy!?!?
Most people tend to grow a number of plants in each pot, simply because one plant will not be enough. Parsley does become a little bushy, but not very. Pick stems and it will send up new ones, it all depends on how much parsley you use, we use lots.....
Your voice is just like the guy on Self Sufficient Me!
this blows my mind! I live in a cool quite cold area and I planted parsley seeds but it took a month until they germinate. Thanks for the hot water tip!
Hope it works for you Katrina, let us know.
@Nataliya PavlyukWe use water that is lukewarm. ALSO try to avoid very cold nighttime temperatures when germinating the seeds
@Nataliya Pavlyuk I haven't tried it yet because I have already too many of them sprouted but I'll definitely will once I ran out of parsley
@Nataliya Pavlyuk Yes you can, just lukewarm water.
My ears keep insisting that this guy is "Self-Sufficient Me" in disguise. They way he said compost
Or perhaps he is this guy in disguise............

In Dallas TX you could plant garlic around Early to Mid October, ready to harvest in April to May.
Cool, thanks for the advice I hope to turn this into a new hobby and not have to spend 3-5 dollars every time I want fresh herbs lol

How do you keep bugs away from your parsley?
Until germinate is still spray normal water everyday or just one times when we put the seed to soil?
Yes, keep the soil moist
Hi Johnny, what do you mean by collecting your own and saving it to grow the next year? What do you collect?
You can let Parsley plants go to seed, collect the seeds heads once ripe, let them dry and store them in a paper bag ready for planting next season.
johnny A thanks Johnny!
Can you grow parsley in pots
Yes, good rich soil, position out of very hot sun.

Do the seed have to be soaked in water first.? Or can they just be put into the soil etc.?
You can plant them straight into the soil, germination may be quicker if soaked.
do you need to poor hot water if you soaked them them overnight (24h in a jar of water) ?
If you soak over night, you would not use the hot water as well. That is simply a method of speeding up germination.
can i do the hot water method to arugula?
You could, do that, however they do germinate easily anyway as long as the soil is warm.
Will this apply to all seeds?
how would you switch from the container to the garden without damaging the plant?
Shift them on a cool day, water the day before, this will help the soil stay around the roots. Lift them out with a flat stick, even a fork. Replant immediately and water in with a liquid seaweed fertiliser.
