    Thanks for the history and the tour. My mother’s family was from Raton, Springer, Mora, and Cimarron. My great grandfather was the sheriff of Colfax County back in the early 1900s. Horseback riding, gunslinging times.

    I have family in Trinidad and in Raton, so I get to see both sides of the pass fairly regularly. Nice to see some history on the place.

    We were there June 16, 2023. The weather was very pleasant. Had a nice breakfast at the Oasis Restaurant on Second Street at the south end of town. The only disappointment was that the iridium layer is now closed off, I assume because of vandalism. The iridium layer in Raton is renowned in geology because it provided the first real evidence that an extraterrestrial impact had killed off the dinosaurs.

      If your staying in town, check out the Raton Pass Motor Inn on the north end of town (Old highway). It's old, but the rooms are clean and the people running it were very friendly and nice.

    Very much enjoyed your video on Raton, NM . I’m interested in the area for retirement. I lived in Denver when I was in the Air Force in the mid eighties. Really like the area and mountain time.
    Looking forward to watching the rest of your videos. Next up is Trinidad Co.

      The Stateline area is an excellent consideration for retirement since it's quiet and historic with good weather. Proximity to both Colorado and New Mexico cities/recreation is another plus. Thanks for watching, and happy retirement!

    I have been to Raton having, I seem to recall, driven up from Las Vegas, NM. There are expansive grasslands south of the town. It is isolated. I like the environment. It reminds me of Roswell's prairie feel. I have been all over NM and really like it all. It is a great state to spend time. Taos is a special place as is Lincoln/Fort Sumner (Billy the Kid), Cloudcroft and the Apaches, Las Cruses, Santa Fe, and so much more. Worth the time.

      Raton had amazing scenery that went for miles. People up here are trying to say Pueblo is the Gateway to the Southwest, but I think Raton is; Wiley and the Roadrunner wouldn't be too out of place! Both Taos and Las Vegas are on our list and I can't wait till we make it there

    The streets are even more desolate with 1/16" of snow. They're all afraid of it being a major winter storm.
    Take caution on a late night stroll however. Bears do like to come down from the foothills & check out the dumpsters.

    According to DNA Ancestry the first settlers in the Sangre de Cristo mountains were from The Iberian peninsula.
    What happened to that 😕 history?

    • @SkiLodgeColorado
      @SkiLodgeColorado  2 года назад +1

      That Peninsula is in Spain. The Utes were in the area before the Spanish.

      I sat on this comment a couple days and think I finally understand what you're saying.
      My videos are about the American settlement of each place. I do mention Spanish settlement of the Sangres in the Aguilar video and very briefly in our "Summary of Colorado History pre-1876" video.

    I’m sorry but this place is wack. Was stuck here for 5 years through a job and it sucked.. dirty people galore.. needles in parking lots. Town was just pointless to me. Nothing ever to do unless you drove a couple hours away.. the lakes were nice but hell no I swear I was in a crap hole. People literally here have no driven lives… maybe a few but for the most part they live off welfare and bs.. wack! glad I’m back home in FL now permanently.
