    The thing about both of these groups is that you can hear how the two halves are each missing something the other one has. Arcadia has the artsy side: the synths and the unusual lyrics, while Power Station has the signature JT bass and the rock guitar edge. All of that together is part of what makes Duran Duran as incredible as it is.
    If you ever decide to look at the other Arcadia videos, "The Flame" is a good one. It's a murder mystery style video lots of humor and even has a JT cameo moment.

    That was an extended mix of "Election Day". Its cool but you would had gotten a better feel of the song from the album version. Also the music video goes along with the shorter album version much better. Arcadia's 'So Red The Rose' album is one of my favorite albums ever! You have to listen to the entire album...it was very experimental for DD back then. A master piece! "Missing" is gorgeous! I liked Power Station but Arcadia was my favorite DD side project.

    • @NicoleM_radiantbaby
      @NicoleM_radiantbaby Год назад +3

      Yeah, I just paused to come here and say the same thing. It's kinda like getting dropped in the deep end listening to the extended mix of 'Election Day' to start. 😆 He definitely should watch the shorter version of the vid with the single/album version of the song for something more digestible. It's still surreal, of course, but perhaps a little easier for people, I think.
      (Having said that I 100% agree that 'So Red the Rose' is a absolute masterpiece! I was just 12 when it came out and while I really loved it as a dark-leaning baby-bat, over the years the masterful layers of its brilliance have truly resonated with me more and more. Plus, it truly has an AMAZING set of backup musicians on the album in addition to the Durans). 🖤

    Great reaction. So glad you were able to get to this. I think Power Station were definitely more radio/pop/rock friendly, where Arcadia was very experimental. In the 80s tho, experimental, especially heavy synth oriented experiments were radio friendly too. Arcadia got their fair share of air play, but Power Station were hugely successful. Couldn’t go anywhere without hearing those two songs. It made everyone look at Andy with a whole new respect, since DD aren’t heavy on the guitar solos. No one expected Andy Taylor to be doing Eddie Van Halen impersonations. Also, just a little background, since both of these projects were put together on a much tighter schedule than typical DD records and videos, with the band being on a “temporary” hiatus, it has a lot to do with the repeated themes and sets. You know them. They don’t generally repeat themselves, especially with videos. They always put a ton of thought and work into each individual video, but there were time constraints for these projects. Don’t beat yourself up about John. Male, female.. if you don’t recognize he’s hot you’re either blind or in denial! 😂

If you ever do a series of Robert Palmer songs, I think you'd like his hits "Every Kind of People," "Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)," and "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On." (Robert Palmer's biggest hits were "Addicted to Love" (No. 1 pop) and "SImply Irresistible" (No. 2).

He, along w/ Nard Edwards & Nile Rodgers made some pretty incredible & unforgettable music together. Enjoy, & you're welcome. :) I got to catch Power Station in Raleigh, NC in July '85. Robert wasn't w/ them on that tour, but it was a fun show. I wish Arcadia had toured.

    The Election Day video seems to be an extended version, while I don't dislike it - it does seem to break up the track a little too much. Defo doesn't have the same impact stretched out like this. I have this theory and I know they had real world stuff going on that led to Power Station and Arcadia but I look at both spin-off bands as a Duran "experiment". If you listen to Duran's return album it is kind of an evolution encouraged by the success of PS and Arcadia. Also John. Yes. Plus he is such a skilled musician too. ❤

      When the Power Station had a reunion tour in the late 90s (sadly without John), I was just recovering from a broken ankle and was still on crutches. During the show (at a small club), I was at the front just leaning on the barricade for balance and because I wanted to be close. A friend of mine was at the side of the stage in his wheelchair and so he could hear the band when they'd come to the side of the stage to talk to crew or whatever. He told me later that, at one point, Robert went to one of the crew and asked for a chair to be 'brought out for that poor girl on crutches in the front row' and that he was apparently repeatedly worried about me! I didn't know that until later and I wouldn't have moved from my spot anyway (right in front of Andy), but that always gave me such great affection for the man! What an absolute legend he was! RIP ❤

    I have always been a Duranie from day one and I was totally here for both of these "splinter" groups. I love Grace Jones' verse in Election Day. Acardia was so stylish and Power Station was so hard rocking. I have to say of the two albums in their entirety, my favorite is Arcadia. I absolutely love "Goodbye is Forever" and I love The Promise (a song that featured Sting). Power Station did a great job with the Bang A Gong remake and I absolutely loved Some Like It Hot. Splitting into two groups caused a panic in the eighties for Durananies like me because we feared they would not regroup but they did after a short break and, eventually, Andy left for good. I love your reactions and your appreciation of everything in the Duran Duran universe! We could have been friends in high school. LOL!💖💖

    I wonder if there was a time when 80s music videos made sense. 😀 But musically there was a lot going on. At the end of the 80s musicians used more and more modern synths, samplers, sequenzers etc. and combined it with classic instruments. Same time Acid house music entered the clubs preparing the world for new electronic music. It was a big thing especially in the UK.

    So glad to see your reactions to Arcadia's music. I would have prefered seperate videos for both bands though as I'm not a Power Station fan at all. Their songs didn't do it for me. To me Arcadia had it all, just like Duran Duran : beautiful synths, artsy music videos and of course, last but not least Simon's voice which made Arcadia sounded more like the usual DD stuff than the Power Station ever did. Robert Palmer has a nice voice too (I liked some of his solo songs like Johnny & Mary) but I prefer Simon's voice by far.
    Funny you hear Prince's style on Election Day, I hadn't noticed but you're right of course. What surprised me the most on Election Day was the James Bond style of the music. It seemed so a logical step after they made A View To A Kill for the James Bond movie of the same name. Hearing those Bondesque horns always makes me smile inside each time I listen to Election Day. I guess they learned a lot from working with John Barry. The voice than can be heard speaking in the bridge of Election Day is the one of Grace Jones. Another James Bond connexion. She was on that movie as well.
    I hope you will react to "The Flame" by Arcadia soon, all the Arcadia songs are good but this music video is so much fun and over the top, I think it will surprise you (plus there's even John Taylor who makes an appearance on it which makes it extra special) :)

    Arcadian whole album is amazing. The song The Flame has a really great video which is sort of a spoof of RHPS. I have a semi-serious question; does anyone think Nick remembers his natural hair color? Nick was always my fave from D2, all my friends found him to feminine, now we call people like him well groomed and a few years ago he would have been called metrosexual. Ahhh, I think I have been to more D2 concerts than any other band. The 80s were the best not just for music, but for live concerts where the performers (one notable exception, Milli Vanilli) sounded as good as, and often better, than the album version.
