I Can't Find My Junk!

- Today I have a new plan for grazing over mature forage, but I can't find my junk to get everything ready! I get out the Farmall 504 tractor and my backup international 990 haybine. The haybine has been sitting for a few years so I check it out, greasing and oiling it. Then it's down to the field to start mowing for the Dexter cattle with the haybine, using a method called cut wilt graze, where paddocks are mowed daily before the cattle graze the cut grass. Nothing goes according to plan: the haybine breaks down and thunderstorms roll in.

Impressed how your channel keeps growing.
For me it's the connection to history, and your positive attitude.
My wife is like yours anytime there’s work to be done outside she is right out there helping me.
I love all the old equipment it's the best ..
Best RUclips videos on the channel!!! Watch you every afternoon! 😎👍🏻
Wes,
It takes a good man to manage his junk just right!
Your videos make us feel apart of your daily life. Look forward to them daily.
Very nice looking 504 Farmall , back in the 60's I had a lot of hours in the seat of a 504
There you go Pete, you just taught me another lesson. I have been making those tight turns with my haybine and didn’t know that would be an issue. I knew that it put stress on the U joints but I didn’t know to what extent until I saw what happened to you. This is why I enjoy watching your channel because I learn a lot.
As a child I was on a farm for quite a time and my grandfather had a dairy. Your farm feels like many breaths of fresh air. Today, especially the comment about the fresh air ahead of a storm.
Cut, wilt, graze. Now I know what I did last weekend is called. Our steers wouldn’t eat the tall grass in the little pasture and it was headed for going to seed. So I got out there with the 9n and bush hog and cut it high. The boys were on it before I made the second pass.
And here I thought I had made a new discovery....
Love the smell of rain, and napalm in the Morning, always go 4 the juggler first..👍😁🧡💚💛🚜
My husband and I were just talking about how it can take forever to get the job done because you end up spending so much time fixing or searching for something, that your tired before you even start!
On finding stuff: back in the late 1980's when I got married, the wife would come home from work & her keys would go in one spot, her purse in another her cigarettes in another, her lighter in another, then she would get to the kitchen & ask me if I saw her lighter. It took me years to train her to put stuff in the same place.
Every time I see that tractor you're working on I think you should call it the then and now tractor. Thanks for the videos and we know it hasn't been easy making your RUclips channel a success it is easy to see way it is a success. Thanks again and farm on sir.
Another great video, when I used to have my cows grazing are used to run my zero turn mower out there and mow strips just like you were talking about and I also found that the cows would hurry on over and eat up that cut grass way faster then they would what was standing all around it. I didn’t realize that was an actual method I was just doing it to keep the parameters around the electric wire cleared and from grounding out and I would also do strips throughout the paddocks.
Now I have a RUclips channel just on my backyard gardening since we sold the farm in 2018
Hillary is the coolest chick on RUclips! What a treasure! Nice going!
We have 3 1090 heston haybines and a pt 10 just in case all heck breaks loose and our old tractor fleet has grown to 5 again just in case
You could always drill a couple holes in your angle iron and hang them up on a nail on the wall so you know where they’re always are going to be when not in use
It has been my experience that when you can't find something just go buy or make a new one, just about guarantee the old one will show up within a day or two LOL
I have a 478 new holland that I'm using for the first time this year. And have a pt -10 Hesston 10 foot cut.Enjoy your videos.
As always, good information.
My Nearly six year old great grandson is watching with me, he likes the man who tells jokes, and he said you could make a robot out of all your atuff
Well thats farming thanks for videos fun watching them
Hi Peter & Hillary. Love watching these videos and catching up with what's going on on your farm. Be well.
Liked all the MD videos, but nice to see you back outside!
Excited to see hay season videos. We are still waiting on a break in the weather to start here in WV. The grass is ready but weather isn’t.
Always hate those issues. On the bright side, at least you have the buildings to pull under to service these issues on inclement days! lots of folks unfortunately don't have that luxury. It's rewarding to know how to fix the old stuff, but I know all too well how much of a headache it can be some days when your list is 3 days long and you have 6 hours to do it, then these issues arise.
Hopefully the local shop isn't lacking in inventory and has them in stock!
I ran a old woods mower that was loaded with U-joints, it would eat them up with along with the rider bearing blocks. Fixed the problem with rubber bungy cords very rarely ever lost one after that.
I just want to say that I'm so happy you make videos. I'm a vascular ultrasound tech in upstate NY and recently purchased my own homestead. I don't think I will ever have anything like you have although 28 year old you may have said that same thing. Any case, you entertain me and bring something to the youtube community that is unprecedented. I look forward to visiting you at market someday whenever I make it down towards your area. I'm up near lake george. Be well. Keep the content coming. Love yah man!
Watching you cut for the cows is like watching a cooking show on Television.
Hi Pete, I enjoy your videos tremendously so thanks very much for sharing your life with us! That rain smell you speak of is called petrichor! I have a farm in Zimbabwe & during the dry season we don't get rain for about 8 months of the year & when the rains finally do come the smell is absolutely amazing & all & sundry are excited & happy! Keep up the great work - much love and respect from zimbabwe 🇿🇼
I'd welded an attachment right on the loader frame on my 450, ... that way they don't get lost again. . .
Good idea. I should do that.
It's called a tool box...
I’m exhausted watching this. I love your stuff and the skill you have in keeping the old machinery going but good lord, so much time spent wrenching, fixing, finding stuff. Maybe get one modern low maintenance tractor, a couple of implements made in this decade and get some work done without breaking down. And organize the junk. But I’ll keep watching. Great stuff.
Hello Pete Hillary. Reminds me I have to go find that too lol. How much time is spent each year looking for something that you know you have but where is it. Enjoy the rain have a good day.
This is amazing! We just, like literally yesterday signed the PNS for a farm in VT. It’s 220 acres and comes with cattle and all the machinery and tractors for haying. I look forward to watching your videos because your farm is just like the one we’re moving too!!
U.joints are very simple to change I put the drive shaft on a vice take off the clips then close vice up just enough to have the joint lay on the vice so both ears are across the jaws of the vice then take a hammer and just hit the knuckle that u.joint is in and when ya hit that down the u.joint pops up and take cap off and the whole joint at that point and put new in and done it's so simple I showed that to a older guy whom was a mechanic and he was going to use a press to do it and he was amazed on how quick I took out the other and put new in ..over all it took about 10mins to do ..so he says I guesse ya can teach old goats new tricks lmao but ya it's a good lil thing to know . godbless and stay safe
You and your family are hard working great people buddy thanks for sharing wish more people was like that
Years ago when baling wirh our Case 400, I always disengaged the pot and reengaged when I straightened out. The 400 was great for that since it had a separate clutch. Just push down then up.
Very nice Pete..I have a question: Has Hill been a farm girl all her life or just since she met you? She always seems to be right on her game helping you and taking care of things. I give a double thumbs up to her and wish you and your family a great Memorial Day!
To prevent scratching the hydraulic rams when you put your angle iron spacers you should place split piece of hose around the ram firs to prevent metal to metal contact
Man, I just love watching your videos. It makes me wish I had been born out in the country and It would be great to have you guys as neighbors. Cheers.
Pete, need to drill you a hole in each of those loader cylinder stops and find you a place to pin those on the loader frame or the tractor so they’re handy!
I got to participate in that storm yesterday as well. I had two lightning strikes nearby...I mean very, very close. The white flash and immediate CRACK told me all I needed to know. Got about 2 inches of rain in short order.
Your cattle are in great order.
All this knowledge should be mandatory curriculum for high schoolers everywhere.
@@DieselRamcharger Who said it had to be in a public school?
@@DieselRamcharger You made an assumption about my comment. I am also dead set against public education, for the same reasons you are.
@@russellegge9840 You illustrate my idea perfectly. Having these skills is a huge confidence and character builder in young people, and especially in boys. If these skills were taught, by schools or parents, it would begin to return the manhood that America is losing.
@@TUGG75Have you taken into account the growing regenerative movement? The number of farmers like Pete is growing, because people demand it and will pay for it. Maybe there will be more robotic mega-farms, but there also might be more people willing to buy quality food from small farmers. I am guessing that small farmers would use robots if it pencils out financially.
That rain smell has a name. Petrichor
The cows are quiet when you move them. Mouths full. Surprised how they don't seem to move out of the way of the haybine. :-)
It's funny you are going to replace some univeral joints, after dinner I'm going to try to replace a u joint on the Ford 907 flail mower we have.
Pete, always look forward to your videos coming out, makes a great break during the day and can't wait to see what you do next. Have a great Memorial Day weekend...smoke up some B-B-Q ribs and chicken, I'm pretty sure you will be able to find some locally! lol
My dad put two horns on his chore tractor; one sounds like a cow to herd them and the other is an old ooga horn to get them to move out of the way. My grandfather put the ooga horn on in the 50s off his old Jeep.
The smell when it just started to rain on warm asphalt in the summer..
@@dustinfisher29 I love that dusty smell, it's the smell of summer for me.
Rain smell, freshly mowed hay or grass, disced dirt. All good smells to me.
👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🗽🙏🏻 Enjoyed! Dad always poured used oil on the sickle bar when he put the mower and combine away and sometimes before using it if it had gotten dry and rusty.
7:18 cows having a good time on the left.😂
Just could watch u r interesting videos all the time! So informative and educational!
Thanks for the video. I appreciate the time you take to do it. Makes for a fun part of my night. Keep em commin
Great video
How’s Doc been don’t see him anymore
He's doing well. I showed him a few videos ago.
Mr. Farmer I would highly recommend you oil the chains while the machinery is running......one trusty person on the tractor and you carefully squeeze oil on em from a jug, tends to work better and really soaks
Ever tried it with a rotary/bushhog mower? Can't say as cutting ahead of them is anything I've tried, but you've got me thinking. We tend to hold off grazing so grass can get ahead of them, tomorrow is our big day when we put them on pasture. Seems like a rotary would mow high enough to help the regrowth.
Hi Pete, here is a german farmers joke for you:
A german farmer is visited by his greatuncle from the us.
He shows the relative his property and the fields.
The american farmer isn´t impressed and says "No match, my fiels are ten times this size"
The german farmer shows his pigs. The american farmer: "My pigs are twice the size".
They come to the cows and the american farmes says again: "My cows are way bigger".
The german farmer now tries a last thing to save his honor.
They go to the donkey and he grabs a pole and slaps it on the donkey´s back - yelling:
"Those damn rabbits are eating my whole hay"
Pete, I continue to be impressed by your ability to maneuver the tractor/implement and simultaneously capture such well-framed hand-held footage. Thanks for this video!
Forgetting where you put your stuff is very common. Happens to me all the time. But I do know where I last saw them so finding is just remembering where you stashed it last. I was going to ask what kind of grease Pete would use for the worm gears on the MD. Put the video answered that already. PS! Blown out a few U joints and had even shrapnel flying. That's why I keep a plastic cover on the shaft to prevent the shrapnel flying into my back.
Send some of that rain south. My peas are dying lol
9:19 and thats why we have a mower in the 3point
I would almost think you were more careful of avoiding the cattle than your wife Pete..... I do enjoy your video's!
thats a good lookin farmall 504 ya got
Been there, done that. Just be glad it wasn't for dry hay with the sun shining.
Hi Pete, I really enjoy your channel. A year ago at the start of the pandemic you talked about potentially changing your business model from seasonal due to increased demand and the majority of your sales coming directly from the farm meaning you could have to revamp the operation or open a farm store. Now that we are post 1 year pandemic and returning to normal have your ideas about this changed? Do you see consumer behavior returning to normal? Interested to see if you have grown your customer base through this “forced exposure” event...
that smell is ozone, formed by lightning, makes u feel good
Similar to static eliminator on copy machine, I'm the 50's the had ozone generator over the door as u walked into Woolworth, u feel good, buy more
Lol, my cats do the same thing as the cows- they won't get outta the way until yah bump their butts
Ooops Sorry Pete I helped cause you more work! But I love that smaller haybine it looks in great condition well apart from the UJ's and the PGO shaft 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣, you should of broke out the old cutter bar mower!!🤣😉
im allergic to clutter, i would spend all my time on a farm just organizing things.
I'm surprised you haven't drilled a hole in each of those two pieces of angle iron and painted them red. Way easier to find that way hanging on a nail on a post in your equipment barn. Little pieces like that always seem to grow legs or know where to hide. Then again, you have way more important things to do.
I've recently subscribed and have been enjoying all the videos.
Thank you.
Thanks for the video!
Suggestion: make a mounting on the loader for the angle irons that you're using for the loader prop. *Brilliant idea by the way!*
Don’t know how you can find the time to film and work on the farm and make a living all at the same time
3:20 how about have a small tool box on that tracker and store those two metals in it , so if you ever need it , it’s RIGHT there 😁
Not sure but at the pig farm I see them use this stick with a paddle at the end and it’s fill with some sort of beads , makes like a maraca sound and they would tap the pigs with them and the pigs would get up and move around .
Can you store the angle irons on the outer casing of the hydraulic cylinder where you had the pipe clamp stored? That way they are always with the tractor.
Run run run
Put you a peace of wire from one side of the hay bine to the sive that the tractor is on and hock to the 🚜 🔌
Run it like it's old.
Pete, you may want to look into a hydraulic diverter valve to easily get more circuits on the 504 hydraulics.
Hey, Pete,
It's a shame you didn't have time before the storm to run out with just the sickle bar on the H and just get it cut , at least the next video will be fixing the hay bind, sorry it went to pieces on you ,
We just use growth regulators to suppress greass from seeding and seed heads for Turf Grass. Pretty sure its safe since its used for crops as well
We’re going to get rain all day tomorrow here in New York
Howdy everybody
I have to show the wife this video, she thinks I'm uniquely looking for my things, and she usually knows where I left them because she put them there.
Around here, if something breaks, you replace it with something that can never break again, except when you're a Land Rover supporter - you can now apparently buy new broken parts off the shelf !
Them cows are gonna have your clutch bunt up
Hi I bought one of your books its great
Hi Pete, I stumbled over your channel a few weeks ago and have spent a lot of hours catching up. There is one thing missing in all your videos ......... you need to get a DOG! A Border Collie following you around all day would put the icing on what is already a very big cake!
I found your junk, it's all over the place laugh
That's the truth!
@@JustaFewAcresFarm glad you didn't run over Hill with the attachment! I saw her jump when she turned and realized it was so close =)
Proud of myself, thought last video why not adjust the haybine up and give the grass a hair cut to get rid of the seed tops and they would eat it as it would get mixed in with what they are after..So I see there is a method and you cut as normal and the cows find it more palatable..I no nothing about farming apart from watching your vids, it's a good watch..
It's called clipping. Taking just enough off the top to conserve what has grown, but make the seeded stuff kick back into growth mode.
I have heartburn with the way IH put those PTO shafts together. The fixed portions of the yoke are supposed to be 90° off from each other at the opposing ends of the shaft, essentially turning it into constant velocity: as one end is speeding up, the other end is slowing down to the same degree, keeping the machine constant during a turn. The telescoping portions of these IH shafts are built in such a way that the position cannot be altered.
I grew up a 504 miss that that tractor ours was a narrow front
Ah, yes. The famous hunting for stuff you know where last it was then calling the woman of the house who finds it in 2 seconds. 😁
Could you please do a detailed video on adjusting your tedders? I just bought a 2 star tedder and it's acting more like a rake, pushing it all to one side. Also I heard that the new Holland bar rakes can be used to tedd hay as well, have you ever heard this b4?
The typical NH rakes cannot ted. I think Allis Chalmers made a bar rake a long time ago with a gearbox so you could reverse the rotation to ted.
Hi Pete, why don´t you just a a ball valve to the hoses of the loader? That way you can just shut the valve intstead of finding the irons and mounting them. I have such a ball valve on my loader and it works fine.
Have a Dad joke for you maybe you’ve already used it I don’t know. But when I saw this I thought of you.
Last night I had a dream that I was a muffler. I woke up exhausted!
Paint it a bright color
Next time you are looking for something, you need to let us know what it is. How are we supposed to help you look for it if we don’t know what we are looking for?
Good point! You may have noticed that I actually found them in the first place I started looking...
It’s certain they’re in the last place you left it and you’ll find it the last place you look for it.
