I didn’t really appreciate John until my girlfriend (now wife) dragged me to his concert in Melbourne in 1993… absolutely an amazing performer and a true gentleman. He is top of my play list, mostly like his live performances played loud.
I'm pretty sure my uncle helped record that concert. I got a VHS of it for my birthday, and right up until my vcr died, that tape was played relayed regularly. How I didn't kill it, I'll never know - I could watch it multiple times a day quite happily. I really miss being able to watch it...
This was 1969. Back then many bands simply didn't want to travel here due to the distance and difficulty of getting here, so local artists would cover overseas hits for the Australian audience - who could then go see these guys play them live. It's a big part of why the 70's and the 80's were so rich musically in this country - a massive gig circuit grew up here, all the bands played live all the time and were very, very good at it. It's where Jimmy Barnes, Iva Davies, Michael Hutchence, Glenn Shorrock all came through, and their bands were Cold Chisel, Icehouse(Flowers), INXS and Little River Band. Other notable bands that didn't make it big overseas were Sherbet, Skyhooks, Divinyls, Angels, just to name a few - and all were just as good live as their studio work. Those first 4 all became world famous, and were big at one point either in the USA or the UK, or both.

However look how amazingly talented our Aussies were at that time...and to be honest most versions of popular songs were actually much better. Win Win! It is heartwarming when you hear other countries lament how good they were and why had they never heard of them! I am so proud Australia has produced so many outstanding performers!

In the 60s and 70s he was a hit - The King of Pop in Australia but it got to the point he was considered "too nice" and radio stations wouldn't play his songs so it was his hit in the 80s (You're The Voice) that brought John back to us. When you see John's fans saying how much they love him, and what an institution he is in Australia, you see why. What an amazing career he's had. Hits in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s. Some musical theatre thrown in there too, a TV show, variety shows and so many concerts, especially in his hometown of Melbourne. He still sings some of his covers, including ONE, at concerts but the fans go crazy when any mention of his hit SADIE is made. You could listen to that one just for a laugh but the quality of his voice was always there.

John was 'discovered ' and signed after he performed at the town hall in Cohuna in northern Victoria (my home town) many years later he came back to perform on the back of a semi trailer in the street to revisit and thank the town. Almost all of the 2500 population came to see him and he didn't disappoint 🙌

Did you know that John F went through a dark "forgotten" patch in the 80"s in which he was relegated to humbly performing in small RSL and sports clubs as a so called washed out singer. It was during this period that hard core fans kept him afloat and he re-invented himself into a belting, performing singer. A new generation discovered John and by the 90's he was famous again and has never looked back. His life story would make a great movie ... also Jimmy Barnes's story would be sensational.

the purity in his voice is awesome but yes when he was 50 years old his live version was so powerful and high ithe high bits were like a whistle it hurt my ears which i loved, also no falseto in the more recent JF

Nelson had a 3 octave voice, was well known for it. John has a more than comparable gift but with grunt and power, which enables him to sing whatever the damn hell he wants.

This was done in 1969, when he was 20. It was a Three Dog Night song, and if I remember rightly They were both on the radio in the same era. That song takes me back. I was 9, and my older sister played it over and over and over. I can't say I like it now, but I can appreciate his emerging talent without hating it like I used to.

John covered this and Raindrops keep falling. A famous cover of Beatles song, Dear Prudence was done by the late Doug Parkinson a gravelly voiced Aussie singer of the sixties. Deffo worth a listen to. I think the ban was lifted in 1970 from memory. I used to own a little pocket radio and laid awake until midnight to hear my Favorite station play overseas music. I was a lot younger and certainly better looking then lol!
This reminds me of Saturday nights at home with my mother, sister and close friends. We would take turns playing 45’s on the record player while singing along and dancing all night long. This song brought back that memory to me. Now I’m a grandma and we have karaoke nights which are just as much fun.

He did this in about 69, it was only 12 months old.. (they did that back then, record other peoples' hits)
I remember hearing an interview he did about the making of Whispering Jack and 1 of the tracks on that...he was recording it and happy with it at first, then slept on it overnight and didn't like it as is, so he had another go at certain parts of the song and nailed it...he came out of that with a changed voice he said, HE didn't even realise he could sing like that with so much power, he had always sung with that softer voice ike in this version.
I was never much into John until he joined the "Little River Band". I think that was when he perfected his voice and I went "WOW":. He is such a treasure to Australia and a nice guy too.

Back in the 50’s to early 70s upcoming to be released singles from USA had a different Australian release date , so songs would be in limbo for while . This gave many Australian artists time to listen and record there own version and release it first , until American recording companies realised what was happening in Australia. Australia got some very good recordings out of loophole in the Industry . This was one of them . Originally written and recorded by Harry Nelson but intended for release in Australia by American band 3 Dog Night . Johnny Farnham just got in a record it before that release .

John Farnham story. He had hits in mid 60s until late 70s. By the end of 70s he was only doing his hits in little clubs on nostalgia tours. He then sort of retired and wasn’t touring again until he replaced Glenn Shorrock in the Little River Band from 1982 to 85. He release a solo album 1986 , the voice & which was a huge hit & that restarted his solo career.
When he was coming to the end of his 'full time' touring career they put out a 3 disc set best of type and one of the discs is called Rarities I think lots of covers from 60s and 70s

I think the ban was lifted in 1970 from memory. I used to own a little pocket radio and laid awake until midnight to hear my Favorite station play overseas music. I was a lot younger and certainly better looking then lol!

This reminds me of Saturday nights at home with my mother, sister and close friends. We would take turns playing 45’s on the record player while singing along and dancing all night long. This song brought back that memory to me. Now I’m a grandma and we have karaoke nights which are just as much fun.

John (called Johnny back then) was "King of Pop" for five consecutive years from 1969-1973. Harry Nilsson wrote and performed the original "One" but it was made popular by "Three Dog Night" when it hit number 5 on the US Billboard in 1969.

I remember hearing an interview he did about the making of Whispering Jack and 1 of the tracks on that...he was recording it and happy with it at first, then slept on it overnight and didn't like it as is, so he had another go at certain parts of the song and nailed it...he came out of that with a changed voice he said, HE didn't even realise he could sing like that with so much power, he had always sung with that softer voice ike in this version.
I was never much into John until he joined the "Little River Band". I think that was when he perfected his voice and I went "WOW":. He is such a treasure to Australia and a nice guy too.

Back in the 50’s to early 70s upcoming to be released singles from USA had a different Australian release date , so songs would be in limbo for while .
This gave many Australian artists time to listen and record there own version and release it first , until American recording companies realised what was happening in Australia.
Australia got some very good recordings out of loophole in the Industry . This was one of them . Originally written and recorded by Harry Nelson but intended for release in Australia by American band 3 Dog Night . Johnny Farnham just got in a record it before that release .

John had his 1st No1 hit at 17. It went to No1,and he then went on to have a no 1 hit in each of five decades. John was born in 1949 and is now 72, and still singing. I'm guessing hewas about 19 in this video.

John Farnham story. He had hits in mid 60s until late 70s. By the end of 70s he was only doing his hits in little clubs on nostalgia tours. He then sort of retired and wasn’t touring again until he replaced Glenn Shorrock in the Little River Band from 1982 to 85. He release a solo album 1986 , the voice & which was a huge hit & that restarted his solo career.
When he was coming to the end of his 'full time' touring career they put out a 3 disc set best of type and one of the discs is called Rarities I think lots of covers from 60s and 70s
I think back in the day (late 60s, early 70s) John Farnham did a number of covers. As a kid in the 90s, I first only knew the song Raim Drops Keep Falling on my Head from the cover on one of my mum's John Farnham albums.
