You made me cry, sis. 😭😭😭😭😭😭 I am experiencing the same thing but in different fields. The puzzle pieces don’t fit into my life. I love education and I love bringing value to the community but there are things in Uni that doesn’t fit fright in how I want to navigate connections and the professional world that is connected to my field doesn’t work for me. Thank you for being open and honest, love. PLEASE more vids like this ✨💕

Girl you’ve got this! Law school is definitely hard, but you will get through it, and see it till the end. If you ever come back to Houston for the summer and want to intern let me know know. I work for one of the Houston 19, and we love having summer interns.

Thank you for sharing Michelle! I am not sure if you mentioned dropping out. However, if you do, your debating spirit and will to advocate for others are still in you, and there are so many law-adjacent fields you could get into. I am currently taking my master's in social work and there is so much advocacy involved there.
I don't know if you can relate, but in taking my master's, I realized how unfeminine I feel waking up at ungodly hours and not able to clean my home when needed. I believe some fields are very difficult for who we are women at the core. And that is okay. I also however believe that so much in life can work around who we are. We are daughters of favour! And somehow, somewhere or someone will take notice of how we carried through.

Love this! I’m so glad you’ve been able to find a program that I hope you enjoy! I think because of the fact that I’m already in my program, the best next step for me to do is to figure out a path in the law that truly aligns with who I am at my car. Thankfully a law degree is extremely flexible. I’m sure with His Grace I’ll be able to find s path that works perfectly for me eventually. Thanks for watching!💕

Law school classes and pressure are nothing compared to the pressure of preparing for and taking the Bar Exam and I took it and passed the first time in two states within 24 months. The pressure of preparing for and taking the Bar Exam is nothing compared to the pressure of trying a case where someone’s freedom, education, livelihood, family, housing, income, custody, or millions of dollars are on the line. And the pressure of trying cases is compounded by the trials and tribulations of normal everyday life in the American racial caste system. No wonder, alcoholism and depression are serious issues in the lawyer community.
You have to know why you are going to law school. I went to acquire the ability to fight for the rights of Black people, in general and the rights of the most economically oppressed Black people, in particular. So I used this as my motivator when times got rough. But the reality is, law school is easy after the first year but you have to “run scared” that first year. You have to focus on understanding the system. Once you do school is easy. For me, romantic relationships were not a priority so I did not have those types of distractions. Find your purpose and use the law to manifest it.
I retired after litigating for 40 years. I was the second in my family to attend law school ( my cousin who is 10 days younger than me went straight from undergrad and I took a year off). My grandparents were uneducated Black people born and raised in the Jim Crow South, who came North during the Great Migration in the 1920s. So, I was not privileged.
Finally, Big Law may not be all that it appears. I know people who went in, made money but quit because of the 60 to 80 hour work weeks and Big Law culture, In my career, I defeated nationally known Big Law firms. So, I know they are not necessarily better lawyers. You have to find balance. Law Scool does not change you if you know who you are and why you are there.

Everything you say is true but it is difficult to keep it in perspective during 1L. Perhaps it’s necessary, I don’t know, but I think the overall experience is deleterious to most students sense of confidence and self efficacy. It sucks to go through something that breaks you down before it builds you up. I know in the future, if I make it through this, I’m going to be subjected to much more serious and intense pressures, but right now it all feels like a stupid game or hazing ritual. Difficult to appreciate. I’m hoping I like my internship with the PD this summer and that energy sees me through.

@@tomas746 You are right. The system is designed to change how you think. The system weeds out those who cannot adapt. It’s kind of like people who want to go to medical school but pass out when they see their first cadaver. They might be brilliant students in undergrad but they may not have the tools to be good doctors.
If you are familiar with Pavlov, you know the most interesting part of his experiment was when the dogs were initially put under the extreme stress of flooding, their minds were wiped clean. Then, the conditioning began. The same is true for people. The intense academic stress brainwashes us, and then, we are taught how to operate in the arena. Knowing this, the best way to survive is to stay balanced. Find something you enjoy doing and do it on a regular basis.
I personally think legal training needs to change. The first 2 years should be intellectually transformational but the final year should be training students in the reality of legal practice: time management, managing client expectations, communication with opponents, civility, e filing, self care, specialization, teamwork.
      Good luck in your career.

Congrats on finishing 1L !!! Maybe I missed it, but are you actually dropping out? I think your 2L and 3L year will be more rewarding bc you will be able to take the classes you want and establish your own schedule. Your reflections were so valuable for someone who will be entering law school in the Fall and I think you can carry those lessons into having a successful couple of years in school! Idk just something to think about

I knew law school was not a joke when I lost 10 pounds in a month during my first semester. I'm usually a stress eater but I was too busy and distracted I wasn't eating and ate soup and tuna because it was quick and easy to make.
