I wear shrugs because, with some style of dresses that I have in my wardrobe, they're the only thing that would look good on top. Also, in autumn they're the perfect "not too warm, not too cool" garment to put on 😄

I wear them too! I like them for when my arms are cold, but my torso isn’t; with a shrug, I don’t have to put an entire other shirt or sweater on, and end up overheating. I have a couple that I sewed out of t-shirt material scarves, and one warm one out of a wider winter scarf of a very soft material. I love them!

As someone who has made 2 giant octopi, I cannot disagree. I did the first one because I was obsessed with it, took me an entire month with very little breaks to finish and while I absolutely love it the tentacles were an absolute paaaain to figure out. The second was as a stash buster since I had a lot of a neon green yarn that was salvaged from an old blanket I made (which was a granny square blanket, so too many loose ends to do in most normal projects)
I definitely love them, but they're currently in a bag in my closet. I can't even sell them because they'd be at minimum $100 for supplies alone, let alone time lol

I love my temperature snake. I never want to make a blanket, unless it was a weekly... I might do that.
I'm currently knitting temperature socks with a white stripe that goes throughout and then one stripe of color for the high of the week. If I knew how to do calf shaping, a daily would be ok, although I would never wear knee socks so...

A scarf is an infinity cowl waiting to happen. All you have to do is make a scarf wide enough and long enough where you sew the ends together, twist it once to wear as a hood and it doesnt ever have to hit your neck.

I definitely get why some people don't get shrugs. For me, I like them because when I get cold, it's my arms and shoulders that get cold, not the rest of me. So the shrug is perfect where as anything bigger like a sweater, cardigan etc is too much material and will overheat me. Especially when I am doing something active like cleaning. For some reason, even when I should be hot, my arms and shoulders are cold.

    • @petloverspy
      @petloverspy 17 часов назад

Yeah it’s interesting how different body parts get cold at various rates for different people! For me it’s my legs that get cold, my torso is always radiating heat. I started wearing boleros because even a shrug has something going across my chest and I just need something to cover my arms, is all

I am with you on almost all of your crochet dislikes. However, I can think of a bunch of gifts in the list. But, none of these for me (although I am not above making a cute pet costume for my Jack Russell Terror, but it would only last as long as we need to take a picture - Now I want to make her a cowboy vest to match her tiny hat 😁). I would like to try crocheting wire for jewelry, so that is one off your list that I would like to try. Also, the water bottle holders are great for our trips to national parks or amusement parks. I have made one previously out of grocery bag yarn, and my daughter used it. I'd like to make a new one or two for my stainless steel cups that I love using. For your bottle, maybe you should crochet a lanyard, so you can attach your bottle to a bag or belt, and keep the handle available. Your novelty yarn aversion is totally correct. I honestly don't know how people can use it, although I do use it for trim for doll clothes, but not crochet.

As someone who has horrible circulation, shrugs can be incredibly useful layer pieces (like thin soft material is great for under t-shirts that are too tight to wear a whole long sleeve under) tho there are some bad ass looking outer wear ones too, it's more about how you personally style it

  • @alexbugarin1089

I made a shrug and I've been using it as a light coverage on my chest for when I've got a top that is slightly lower cut than I feel comfortable wearing at work. You'd also be surprised how warm a very loose mesh stitch can be, so it's nice for when you need light coverage. I have a tendency to get cold at work when my arms are fully exposed.

I like a bucket hat with a brim. I burn easily so need something to protect my face. Shrugs are often used instead of a shawl in formal occasions so you don’t have to fiddle with keeping the shawl on but still have protection for bare shoulders.

  • @winterprism9227
    @winterprism9227 День назад +2

Scarves, I didn't like them either, for a long time, until I played around with ways to wear them. I will wear one when it gets super cold and my coat doesn't keep my neck, and sometimes ears ( larger scarves can be draped over head too), warm enough.
Bucket hats, I actually really like. I'd rather wear a bucket hat to help block out sun, than a baseball cap.
Shrugs are nice in places where the temps change from warm enough to go sleeveless to cold enough to just need sleeves, particularly when going out and wearing a spaghetti strap or strapless top/dress. Kind of like the same purpose as a shawl but not as much coverage. I don't wear those types of tops/dresses nearly enough to wear shrugs either, I would probably wear a shawl though.

Thank you Leigh!!!!😍 Finally, somebody says it; Those viral trends that everyone are making awghhhh!🙄 When I see ANOTHER tutorial/patterns of "cylinder" BEE, a leggy frog, the" mabel chicken" and lately the loaf cats...Seriously?!!!! I feel so bad for the designer of the original one of these, how frustrating it must be that half the of the crochet commmunauty is " stealing/ copying the IDEA you had. Cuz yes just looking at it you can figuring it out and write the pattern for yourself. Ok, I can understand that just keep it for you, if you don't have enought money to pay( or you don't want to pay) for every pattern you like to/ and crochet.
And the other one is GNOMES! . For this one its mostly a case of personal taste I think. I just don't think they are cutes!!! I'm not Scare, but I just don't get it and they are so many out there!
I would add those type of " jewelry " for the feet, they don't even have a sool ( sorry don't know how to write it...) Its to write on the beach or to take pictures
Finally, doilies, I just LOVE those with skulls in it, or any horror cool designs in it. 😍
And now, when I dont like crocheting a project , I too, just stop it, and frog or trash it. Crocheting is not a job but a hobby for me and there is so little time in a day, I just want to have fun , enjoy the process and the final project..
NB : I forgot the granny squares! Never crochet en entire one!😄 I dont like that they have holes in them! So I know it's not a very popular opinion cuz do many crocheter loves them!
Again, thank you for sayingb out loud what I'm thinking 😋✌️✌️✌️

It must be really frustrating for those creators to see something they worked hard on replicated over and over again. I think it's okay if people want to put their own spin on it and change the pattern up but I've seen so many patterns that are virtually identical, it becomes hard to tell who the original designer was.

Completely agree with you about gnomes, but last year I tried the Gnomes of the Gnorth pattern (can't recall what made me do it!!), and I was addicted. I adapted them, made them in several different sizes, and went just a little gnome mad. It was cool too, because it taught me a new stitch I wasn't even aware of till then (yarn over slip stitch, or whatever it's meant to be called), which I still use now in other projects. So I guess, from my own stand point, never say never...?

I’ve never been tempted to do a temperature blanket bc it’s 95 to 110 plus degrees about 7 months of the year where I live! And our winter is more like autumn, rarely dipping into the 50’s.
I agree with bucket hats: some people look real cute in them, but not me. In fact, I don’t look good in any kind of hat, lol.
I’d love to make more garments, but not the tight, midriff baring things I always see. I’m not young and skinny anymore.
I am divided on the doily thing. Yep, it’s granny stuff for sure, but being attracted to the delicate thread work, I’ve inexplicably made many of them. Other than snowflakes for Xmas decorations, I have no use for any of them, lol.

I occasionally make a scarf. I have one that I wear hanging down mostly to cover the velcro that I rarely do up. Otherwise, I'm not a scarf person.
Bucket hats. I don't care for them but my son and his family like them so I made 4 of them in 2023. I had no plans to make them before that. They were cute but not my aesthetic.
We just got two kittens and although they are young enough to train into wearing things I make, I just can't torment a pet like that. I can see it for some dogs who would get cold but most of the time, I don't like the idea of torturing them.

I do want to make a purse that is reinforced with that plastic mesh stuff so it doesn't lose shape but regular crochet bags generally look sad to me when they get misshapen. I want to make wearables but, I tried making a sweater and its horrible. The yarn cant be frogged because its got so many wispies that its locked in. I think I need to practice more before I try wearables again. Oh and temperature blankets. I lost interest in it after about 30 rounds and meh. Not worth it. I wish I could do the micro crochet but I simply do not have the vision or dexterity for that.

I'm not against the idea of making another giant plush, but I do agree it's a major pain. I still love the giant one I've made, but it's almost as big as me, very heavy, and takes up too much space...... Was it still fun making it? Yes 😅

No temperature blankets for me. I would lose interest and end up miles behind

I agree with you about temperature blankets, but I am thinking of doing a special temperature blanket for my parents. It is their 50th wedding anniversary in 2026, so how cool would it be to create a special blanket with the temps (or approximate temps) from where they got married in 1976. Luckily, we can find almost anything online.

Viral trends irritate me, lol. As a market vendor I do a few because they supplement my income but I'm picky which ones I make. I really like the more unique one of a kind amigurumi.

That must be a tough spot to be in, having to find that balance between what you want to make and what sells at markets.

I made a water bottle holder with a diamond mesh pattern. It started getting stretched out of shape holding my water bottle, so I stopped using it.
I live too far south (in the northern hemisphere) to get much use out of blankets, so I don't think I'll ever make one. It seems pointless.

    Chenille yarns and granny squares.
But a lot of the things that go viral I do not see the appeal. But if I find it interesting I will but I won't just make it because it is viral.

So I asked my sister what shoyld I make for her husband. She said a scarf and I was like cool. Well, I finished it only to realize that I made it with a wool yarn and he has a skin condition and I had to make sure he wasn't allergic. The morning of frickin christmas, I finally finished his damn scarf. I was like I should have just gotten him some flannels insteads! Now I have this extra scarf for no reason and I don't wear them

I agree with all your thoughts accept two. Novelty yarn and scarves. Novelty yarn can/ SHOULD be used for trim. example fringe on the ends of a scarf or a pompom on a hat or the trim on a christmas tree skirt or as part of a cat toy. Gnomes are without a doubt STUPID ! ! I do not get it at all. They are not for me. Granny squares, I understand the concept. I do not like how they are constructed and how they look when finished. They remind me of 1970"s everything. So cringe-y !!!
I make things to be used (wash cloths) or keep you warm (blankets) or for kids/ animals to play with. If you are going to put it on display and never use it, I find that insulting. Some things are put away for a while and pulled out again, such as winter or summer or holiday things. Anyway, I am off my soap box now. If you would like pictures of things I have made with novelty yarns, just contact me. See you in the next one.

For the shrugs, it might be a modesty thing. Wearing spaghetti straps is not acceptable here in Japan but you can cover it with a cotton shrug.

You should try making one that appeals to you. The satisfaction of joining all the pieces together, putting a face on it is so satisfying. It's as though you have brought something to life. I have heaps that I look at every day and feel quite proud of myself & trying to make more complicated ones. Hippo sits on the lounge with me. I am not young.
