Just gave birth a month ago and I'm glad you mentioned about doctors nurses not always know what they're talking about. I was told I was 5cm. I told them how could that be because the pain at that point was unbearable. I was getting contractions without breaks, I was screaming in pain. They left the room with a student nurse in there. No kidding it was probably 5 minutes later I yelled "I think something is coming out " when the student picks up the blanket, there's the babies head coming out! I know sometimes there's moms that over exaggerate but not every mom should be treated the same! I knew I was st 10 I knew the baby was coming. Why did they ignore me!? Glad you made this video. Helps to spread awareness

First off: congratulations! You are so incredibly strong and your partner is so loving and caring.
This has given me a completely different perspective on exactly how the Black community is treated in our healthcare system. As a white woman in America, I received constant care from multiple nurses, to see the way you were treated just completely baffles me. To say sorry is not enough. The entire system and country needs to change. Thank you for sharing your experience. It was a beautiful experience but also a much needed and appreciated eye opener.

That is true. But with me giving birth to my children’s I never screamed or cried I did exactly what she did. I wasn’t screaming when I push the push they were more afraid because they thought I was dead or dying so they kept an eye on me. But the other person that was next to me a Haitian lady she was screaming, and he told her you wasn’t screaming when he was getting it so shut up. And my husband was there with me every step of the way. so yeah we get treated very very differently.

Every woman gets the same exact pitocin laying on their backs to give birth and monitoring at the same time.. instead of drs. being patient and waiting for our bodies to do what it's naturally designed to do

In all fairness, medical staff work super long, exhausting hours all on their feet (and each person doing the work of multiple people since it is so hard to find employees these days!) They are likely so focused on their jobs that they seem less "thrilled" than they really are. I know when I try to focus on something important, I talk way less and just put my mind to the task. I'd much rather have a focused medical staff for something important like this than them worrying about entertaining me with smiles and hyper energy lol

The way the staff were so unsupportive and not compassionate was disgusting. I loved how supportive and involved your husband was. I have seen a lot of couples with husbands who sit on their phones whilst their partner’s contracting 🤦🏾‍♀️. But as a midwife the reason they ask to change from a supine position is because it increases the chances of perineal trauma and can prolong labour and intensify the pain for some women. So changing the position makes the birthing process safer and more tolerable than that position. However it will always remain the choice of the mother. Also asking you to slow down as annoying as it is, it’s meant to help prevent perineal tears. You really handled this situation amazingly and I hope the staff make a change in the way they provide care for black women 👸🏾, because we are just as important.

When my friend had her baby a year ago the nurse had the nerve to say not to record her. I had been recording the experience for my friend so she could have something to look back to. Pain & all, us trying to make her laugh etc... I wasnt even recording the nurse. She was just in the room when I was recording part of the time. But her comment had me like “uh I’m not recording YOU. I’m recording MY FRIEND & her experience. Has nothing to do with you.” Like uh lady? Dont tell me what to do w/ my video. That made me record every time she came in in fact. It made me more alert just in case something happens, we have evidence. Everyone in the room was like huh? Her saying that made us like eh could’ve kept that comment to yourself. She’s a young Black Woman giving birth we know what y’all do to us. She had such horrible pain while in labor for hours (past 24 hrs at this point) she had to stress her pain level had exceeded beyond the point at which they wanted to help her. Meaning she had to voice her pain was worse than it was cause they kept turning her away while she was in labor. It’s really crazy shit what they do to us smmfh.

Not saying all healthcare professionals are horrible nor are all midwives/doulas in your best interest HOWEVER I refuse to let the hospital treat me some kind of way unknowingly while I’m trying to bring life into this world. Think about what they did to us in the past they were never here for our pain (Black Women mainly, we were used as experiments for the first OBGYN tests from a white male doctor no less🙄) and they do not believe us & would rather us suffer. That has to be the scariest thing in the world.

I've had natural births and the last one was 10lbs. I pushed for so long with that one. I'm 33 weeks pregnant with another boy and he is going to be a big one too. You made birthing look easy, great job mama.
