Oh man, this song is just so...ugh...what's the word?...PERFECT? Elvis was born to sing the Blues and Gospel and one can only dream of what could have been if Parker hadn't kept him tied up on such a short chain.
Elvis's housekeeper and cook Alberta Holman had been with the family for years and was very close to his mother, Gladys. Elvis nicknamed her Alberta VO5 after the famous hair product brand, Alberto VO5. After Gladys passed away, Alberta used to make Elvis his favourite meal of bacon, hashbrowns and black-eyed peas. According to the biography Down at the End of Lonely Street: The Life and Death of Elvis Presley by Peter Harry Brown and Pat H. Broeske, Alberta said she found him crying about the upcoming wedding in 1967. She asked Elvis why he didn't just cancel it if it was making him so unhappy and he apparently replied, "I don't have a choice."
Uwe Schulz he was playing a twelfth feet high “E” chord , in between singing phrases, similar to Heartbreak Hotel, just under James’ fills - goofing around on his Gretsch “Country Gentleman” electric guitar , which he used frequently in ‘69-‘70. @@diogocatalano9557 Definitely electric lead was James Burton. I think Elvis learned the intro lead licks, and the turnaround, and played those on the acoustic, then just strummed for the rest of the song while Burton took up the lead.
James Burton is playing the lead guitar but you can clearly hear Elvis playing his style like a bass guitar and doing his riffs. Elvis is playing on his Gretsch electric guitar. You can clearly hear Elvis style in guitar playing. He actually played more electric guitar in 1969 in his Vegas years on his gretsch. Listen to songs like runaway, funny how time slips away, reconsider baby, baby what you want me to do, are you lonesome tonight in 1969. Same guitar style and Elvis is playing on all of them.
Doggone it: no video! Elvis is on rhythm and really digging in between himself and James. But nobody can see it! I hope "Parker" is toasting his toes right now. No filming allowed. ☹️
Hi Folks, I don't think it's Elvis playing lead guitar. He says something about 'James' playing at one point. That would be James Burtno, one of the greats, who was also Ricky Nelson's guitar player.
The likes of Little Richard, Ray Charles, James Brown didn’t need it. All the rest of mankind needed it. A messiah that would bring the musical universe burning from New Orleans to Nashville to the rest of the world. He had to be a son of that land, naturally rooted in that music, he had to be white because so was required in those times, he had to be cute as an angel, full of talent, unique in conquering the people hearts. He had to be Elvis.
+Brian MacDonald Shut up. Most every guitar back then was never completely tuned. It added to the rawness. Even Jimi and Jimmy didn't tune their guitars completely all the time. You probably already complained about that, though.
Not to mention the Gretch guitar Elvis was playing has a totally different sound than a fender telecaster, does not mean it's out of tune. If it had been out of tune John would had let him know to check his "B" string...lol....John Wilkinson met Elvis when he was very young and told Elvis he couldn't play the guitar worth a damn..lol......
BruceEllis1964 itwas out of tune - so was the high E. The fact that he could play guitar and piano, in addition to a gargantuan voice and charisma, makes it that much more endearing.
Sorry guy, James Burton, one of the finest guitar players ever to grace a stage was not playing off key or out of tune. If you do not like this version, that's one thing but I think Mr. Burton knew what he was playing, just saying. Bruce, thanks for the post.
Elvis is playing his Gretsch Country Gentleman - likely doing the same parr’s as he did on the record. James Burton is playing lead on his Telecaster. There are some out of tune high strings, and those to my ears are on Elvis’ guitar. They are not evident during Elvis’ turnaround on the low strings.
Since you love Lowell Fulson's "Reconsider Baby" so much more then Elvis' then I bet you, Louis Caldwell, would think Big Momma Thronton's "Hound Dog" was done better then Elvis' too. Sounds like some racism with a touch of jealousy on you part Louis..
First time I've disliked a James Burton guitar solo. He's one of my ultimate guitar idols of all time, but his solo on this version is not very good. It sounds weak and thin and uninspired. Elvis is singing it great, but this classic blues demands a classic blues solo like Lowell Fulsom and Bone Walker and James isn't living up to it.

Terrible version of a master's song. Lowell fulson was for real, and Elvis was an imitator, who thought he was so big he didnt even have to know the damn words. His voice was great though when he wasnt fucked up, like he usually was.
He wasn't fucked up in 69. And yeah he liked to focus in on a couple verses, maybe 3 even, that he was comfortable with. His style was feel. If it didn't feel comfortable he didn't do it. If lyrics were awkward he didn't sing them.

Sing the blues man, Sing the blues!!! This and 'Like a Baby', great blues numbers by Elvis.

Elvis playing the softer-sounding electric guitar, sounds like he picked up a few moves you 'd expect to hear on a bass guitar, and threw those in ...
