  • Second part of a line-up of live footage samples from the greatest drummers of xxth century. A work basically centered on Jazz, but not exclusively, following a kind of chronological display, always limited by the availability of footage material of those incredible musicians. The modern drumset or drum kit was completed by the 20's, under the designation of "jazz drums", after the invention of the hi-hat pedal system that controls a pair of cymbals opposed to each other. The 'Hi-Hat' designation shows a clear reference to the period of the 'roaring twenties', like it happens in France, where it's called "Charleston". The drums evolved up to its actual configuration, and are used nowadays in Pop, Rock, Soul, Rhythm'n Blues, Blues, and many other musical styles, besides Jazz.

I'm glad this is called great drummers. I never buy into this greatest propaganda. Sure it's cool to have a preference but they're all great and each brings on a unique style. Great post.

Love your vids, but can you tell me what that opening bit is with all of the drummers in the same room? I've seen that footage before, in color, but haven't been able to find it since. Again, great vids, thanks for the nice work.

When I kept hearing Buddy Rich was the greatest of all time I kept on saying no way theres probably better that are less heard of.
But honestly I dont think there ever was and still is a drummer as technically proficient as him ever. Say what you will about style, but buddy rich could back up his speed, smoothness, and dexterity with some creativity that was for a while beyond everyone else.

Great post Rui - any drummer worth his salt needs to be well versed or at least aware of all the drummers in Part 1 and Part 2. Not saying there aren't great drummers today but we can all learn from the masters as a base. These guys lived in a time' when you played music 7 days a week and then played in an after hours place - and it shows in their organic playing. Like I said, plenty of great drummers after these guys but a lot of guys have unbelievable chops from practicing 10 hours a day but have not had the opportunity to play a lot of music and when they do its recording a part to a track that has already been laid down. Not their fault - it's the music industry today - just saying there was a time years ago where live music all over the place - and there is no substitute for playing in a group with other musicians and how it shapes your playing. Little bit of a soapbox - sorry about that. Maybe I'm just an old timer, No Country for All Men - lol.

I'm aware of that. They were appointed to the last part of these series of compilations, but back then i hadn't got the time to do the necessary work of search and analysis, editing andv mounting required to do a collection like these ones...

The official name of the drum kit is "JAZZ DRUMS", so, it makes perfectly sense. The drums were develloped during Jazz golden eras, so... And it´s still going, remember Frank Zappa frase : "Jazz is not dead, it just smells funny " eheheh

Too bad the quality is garbage, because of the time frame, but to me this just sounds like any average four years old banging on trash cans and buckets, no way id consider it the greatest drummers. in my honest opinion no drummer comes any where near danny carey, not even close. ive searched you tube, searched google, searched bing, ive even asked around for advice on what to look for, and yet no one comes close, its like he is on an entirely different level. on that same note though, I do not play drums, and this shit in your video is just not my style, no disrespect intended.
