Thanks for this - I learned so much from you. Just got a ‘59 reissue from 2012. Sounds amazing they did a great job on those guitars and pickups.
Great real world take on strat pick ups.best video you have done you nailed it.
I appreciate the time and effort that you take to make these videos and sharing your love for these wonderful instruments that I too am addicted too... Thank you my brother...
Thank YOU my friend!
great video man, I subscribed and between You, Matthew Scott, and the Guitarologist i can now waste a whole day watching. Off subject but I saw the video of you doing wind cries mary and was blown away. YOU HAVE A GIFT SIR !!!
Really like your channel. Always learning something!
Such a great video! This was explained in a way that someone who doesn't know much about this stuff (like myself) to wrap his head around it.
Im glad it helps clear things up
My man! I love pickup talk. And I too am a fan of the middle pup (when it's a good one!).
My 87 strat has a great set, made to my specs, by Andrey from Defter (4.98k, 5.38k and 6.19k) and that middle pup just sings. Especially when I step on my keeley TS. Maybe it's the combination of the pickup, the treble bleed and the TBX those strats came with... I don't know... It's awesome. As are the in-between positions.
Great video, man. Keep it up.
Loved the video, great insights!
One of the best videos I have seen on this subject. Years ago I wouldn't buy anything unless it said hi output. I it gets in our mind through advertising that more is better. Subbed!
Oh man. Thanks so much!
I love Ancho Poblano PUs in my Fender CS postmodern strat. I replaced the vibrato for Wudtone CP 50 and Highwood saddles and the whole guitar CRYO tuned. Now guitar rings like a bell and sounds&feels like a very good vintage strat. Highly recommended! :)
Man are you ever right about these pickups when I got mine it like totally changed my world dude. Hard to say what you mean but thank you! Salute 🤠
cool vid man. Your tone, Matthew scott's... you guys know the strat sound me and other strat lovers want. Lookin up fat 50's right now.
Really thank you!
Hey Nik, I have used and had good luck with VanZandts pickups. They have vintage output and hot so there is something for everyone. I have used the vintage and vintage plus strat pickups and I really liked them. But sometimes you need to try something different to keep it fresh. So I recently started using Mark Foley pickups. I heard of them because that's what Matt Schofield uses in his SVL guitars. He offers some really cool options and there are a few that I want to try. But what he made for me was a unique one off that gave me exactly what I wanted. I can't recommend him enough. The best pickups I have ever had.
Excellent and informative video!! Inspiring!
Very Cool and Interesting. My first strat was a 1988 MIJ Reissue modeled after a White ‘68 Strat. I really wish i still had it to compare with my current Strat. My Strat is 2000 ‘56 Custom Shop Guitar. Now, I believe its got s fat 50’s set. But there are so many changes over the years it’s difficult to be sure.
Neck 5.874
Middle 5.914
Bridge 5.888
For me, I cannot think of a better Strat tone than the one that comes out of this maple necked guitar. That said, i am always looking for a reasonably priced pre CBS Strat. But until that day comes, all is well. Thanx for the Great Channel!!!
Thank you man i realy like your video’s .
I tried for 2 years for the right pickups in my strat...finally settled on a SD hotrails in the bridge..a planet tone 69 voodoo in the middle and a planet tone 59 overwound in the neck...that one sings with a bit of blues driver added in. Best of rock tone and classic strat tone...very versatile guitar now.
Great advice on pickup height adjustment, thanks .
Just for reference here are the readings on my '57/'62 set:
Neck 5.65
Middle 6.86
Bridge 5.68
Pure Vintage '65 set :
Neck 5.88
Middle 5.84
Bridge 5.87
Hope this is useful to someone 👍
I’ve been winding pickups for over 33 years. And you’re absolutely right.
Hi Nick! Have you ever tried Slider’s pickups 59 SRV’s. I have them in 2 of my Strats. Awesome recreations!
i finally got jm rolph 63s and ron Ellis 54s. Thanks for the suggestions i can't wait to install them.
cool job! thanks for sharing your view! I've been using PV59 on both guitars (old 62 and 54reissues japan) I love them, the difference is more on the guitars..but they're close enough to replace one with the other mid set on a live blues session.
I agree with you that it is all personal taste in the end, but this was a nice insight. Don't have vintage strats but I love mine either way. A '62 RI Japanese with Texas Specials ( wasn't a fan at first but they aren't that bad - these are from the '90s ) and a Squier MIK with Seymour Duncan SSL-1s, now they made a whole lotta difference. I took your advice and put Raw Vintage springs and they are great. Cheers and keep the videos coming!
Awesome man!!! Great guitars for sure. And they respond to mods very well
@@theriffwniksevigny5473 Hey Nik I've been meaning to ask, have you tried the new Fender Custom Shop Fat '60s pickups? Some people recommended those and they are Alnico 2 and I know you said some great stuff about the Fat '50s which are Alnico 5. Does that make any difference? Thanx
My only single coils are in my 60 duo-sonic. Its a pure hack job long before I got it. Body contours, string through body and a hard tail strat bridge with 64 Strat pickups.
Kind of a junker but man those pickups sounded great until the bridge died. So I did what anyone would do and hacked it a little more and put my ancient stacked Duncan the guy gave me when i bought it. Sure baby Jesus is crying from the hackwork but it sounds amazing and it was almost free.
Your ability to explain things thoroughly in a short time is impressive. And you have a great pile o guitfiddles.
Thank you for the kind words!
Great discussion, most appreciated! I also found that custom shop fat 50’s are fantastic pickups, the FSR Mystic burst strat I bought has them and its my favorite. My 77 strat always kind of sucked! I’m the second owner and its been changed up many times. I put Seymour Duncan Antiquity pickups in there on the last rebuild which I would say work well, they’re maybe less shimmery and chimney than I would like but solid performers regardless. Original grey backs were tin like, weak, and had little to no tone. Flat magnets. Not sure why I didn’t know how to test them. Just sharing!
Great content. Thanks
I just subscribed because I love how you explain things and I trust your ears !!......and you are a great player !..
Cheers!............Lou from Quebec
Thank you Lou!
@@theriffwniksevigny5473 Welcome my Friend !!
Nice discussion dude. I'm happy with the pups in my Strat. Its not a vintage Fender, but its handmade by a guy in Brooklyn named Chihoe Hahn. It sounds better than any Custom Shop guitar I've ever heard. The pickups are Lindy Fralin. I've thought of giving the Bluebirds a go; I love Jesse Davey's tone and his pedals, but so far "it ain't broke". FYI, "Gauss" rhymes with "house". cheers
Great video Nik. I built a strat last year and put #VaughnSkow 59 "number one" historic set in it. I've never really liked strats till I played these pickups in one.
I’ll look into them. Thank you!!
Agreed on the low output sounding the best. That cherry sunburst looks like a '58, like is on the cover of The Ventures' second album ...
I've been playing Fenders for 57+ years, and I have come to the conclusion that the more electricity (even the small amounts) work some kind of magic on a pickup, regardless of what kind. I keep the back pickups as high as I can get them, without my hand pushing the bass strings down on top of the PUP ... I like the Fat Fifties, as well ... but don't have any. Do any of these tests with new strings, especially Stringjoys ... Klein makes some nice PUPs, as well ...
Great video. I'm glad I'm not the only one who dives into this stuff. I agree with you on those Don Mare formvars. Excellent. I've had some good luck with Klein 61 and 65 on alder body strats. Thanks for the great work man.
Great video...my MIM maple neck '95 Fender Strat Special's HSS pickups served me well for 20yrs but after a pickguard swap ruining the middle pickup when the cover came off, i went the traditional route w/a set of Stewmac's Golden Age Alnico 5 pickups and at 6.3K(b) 6.4K(m) & 6.5K(n) they have the bright sweetness that's better and slightly louder than the Mexican SC's and gutted the Alpha electronics that loaded the pickguard w/the pickups for 250K CTS pots, Sprague .022 & .047 orange capacitors and pushcloth wiring . Now the ceramic SC's in my rosewood MIC '00 Squier Affinity Strat lefty are in the vintage range of 5.5K(b), 5.58K(m) & 5.6(n); their brightness was too shrill unless i rolled off the volume & tone and I didn't want to do anything too drastic so I swapped out the old cheap Chinese electronics for the cheap-but-better Alphas from the Stewmac loaded pickguard and that shrillness disappeared.
Those are some great upgrades!
Hi Nik, your pickups are low output and I like that. I have installed a set of Fender Custom shop 69 and this is what I measure. Neck 5.1 ohms, Middle 5.22 ohms, bridge 5.23 ohms. I did have texas specials but sold them. I feel that this set breathes better and has dynamics.......
Great stuff Nik. Would love to hear your thoughts on electrical shielding and its potential effect on tone.
You’ll get some EMI benefits at best and a reduction in highs at worst.
Thanks for the post. I have a few Pre CBS Black fender pickups that were hand wound. 1 is just under 4.3 K I was not sure I would be good with that. Now I think I am.
I have hand-wound fat 50s on my CS '59 Strat and they are the best pickups I have ever had on a guitar, really amazing tone.
I have a "72 Strat that someone robbed the original pickups out of, and I put in a set of fat 50's, and just love the tone. However, I put a set of Rocketfire Total 60's into a 63 reissue, and WOW! the tone is what I been chasing for decades!!! BIG/FAT clean SRV tone in spades. I have trouble putting the guitar down, I just can't get enough of it.
Don Mare is amazing! I used to live in Southern California, and called Don up one day to have him wind me a Tele bridge pickup. He had a waiting period of several months at the time, but when he realized I lived about 20 minutes away he wound it for me in about a week. I drove over to Don's house and picked it up and it was incredible. Really sweet dude who does amazing work.
Tyler Davis I'm trying to decide what don mare set to get for stratocaster .like 50s or 60ss?
@@chrisbirch4066 I've never played his Strat pickups, but I don't think you could go wrong. Generally, I think a late-50s style strat pickup is the best version of that sound. But it all depends on what you want.
WOWOWOWOWOW that bridge pup!!!!
Very interesting/informative vid ! Out a matter of interest in your opinion do the magnet types make much of a difference? I’m using a set of bare knuckle apache’s in my ‘07 Strat and it seems to sound full sounding and drives the front end of most amp I’ve plugged it into fairly easily, apparently they are alnico 3 mag’s with between 5.7k neck to 6.5k in the bridge. For some reason the original pickups were also alnico 3 but with some crazy high resistance like 12k but didn’t sound very nice!
Awesome demo 👌
Thanks my friend
cool stuff here. I'm not too much hangout over boutique stuff.. now I'm using the Fender Pure Vintage 59 set..and bam! - no need to go down the pickups rabbit hole. A big part of it is marketing. There are so many variables for a strat to sound it's best that we tend to overlook. -great working pots, the cap, the sustain block, and the overall guitar setup.
And that's just on the guitar itself..
I now focus on the specs of pickups and overall style and go from there about pickup choices. 50's or 60's spec and voiced, and then only a bit further than that -cause really there's not much more to it.
subbed, all about hendrix and stevie. i have a white mn player strat, ac30 with blues, vox wah, sd-1, mxr 108, and an ehx good vibes. trying to get the best tone from these player pickups.
The neck pickup at 8mins in that 4.9 or something. The way that cut and screamed yet had the lower output range and tone that's what I'm after. Screaming cutting low output pre CBS strat pickups. I have an original pre CBS partscaster with new pickups that suck. Can someone recommend some pickups to get that neck pickup scream cutting sound? What about musicmaster/duo sonic/mustang/jaguar pre CBS pickups ? Boutique? I also love the character of Dynasonics/Gretsch rockabilly/surfy/Twangy Duane Eddy Rebel Rouser tonal character. Praying someone drops a great recommendation to get that pre CBS neck pickup low output cut/scream that can get similar passable cover of Duane Eddy's Rebel Rouser sound in a set of 3 strat pickups Great video love your channel. That neck pickup is heaven
I just picked up a set of Mark Foley pre CBS 5s4 pickups, they are sweet
Late63 the winders got a greenish stamp with their initials my 64 has AY . Very cool to know whom wound them my 64 has the bone rattling tone bro!
Like Nik said in the video, with the pickups attached to the rest of the circuit we are not reading their correct DC impedance. You have to disconnect them because if you dont you are reading a DC parallel impedance with the volume pot. The values are approximate. cheers
Yes and in the first few minutes of the video i made that clear!!!!! It was a Reference
Great video, very informative; subbed!
I thank you!
@@theriffwniksevigny5473 You are most welcome, I thoroughly enjoyed. BTW, have you tried out the Lollar Blondes, and/or the Blackface sets? I am giving the Blondes a serious thought. Thanks!
Michal Mikolaj Maslowski ive used the blackface. Good results
@@theriffwniksevigny5473 Thanks, Nick. Last one, I promise: ThroBak '63 MXV (any experience with them)?
I'm using Benson custom pickups I have a few sets finally found the ones I like. Research threw your channel and Matt's I came up with what specs I like. Benson will wind them to whatever you like and they don't cost an arm and a leg. He is based out of New York.
Awesome! Good to know!
I got him to wind me some 59 spec but the 54s are my second favorite
My main Guitars are a '63 and a '64 Stratocaster. The '63 has Stackpole Pots and black Bobbin Pickups, the '64 has CTS Pots and grey Bobbin Pickups. The Solder Joints on the '63 are untouched, so it has the original CRL 3-way Switch. The '64 has a CRL 5-way Switch. No Tone Control for the Bridge Pickup on both Guitars. I'm always a little surprised when People ask what Pickups I use in my Guitars. Who would change the Pickups in a pre CBS Stratocaster? I used them on Tour all over Europe (long before CITES) when I was younger and in countless Studio Sessions over the last 35 years. I got booked for Sessions because of the "real Fender Sound". I live in Austria where not many real Fender Guitars are around. I tried newer Fender Guitars for Fun, but to me they are just Copies. They feel like Toys compared to the real Instruments. Nice Video. I knew everything you were talking about already, but nice to hear someone talk about these things. The new Pickups I have tested that came closest to the old ones have been made by Andreas Kloppmann in Stuhr, Germany.
I bought a custom set off a guy who made them and they read like 4.9 in the bridge and was really cool sounding pickups. The neck was only 5.2 and middle was 5.1
I’m with you on the fat 50 set. I have more sets of fat 50s than any other modern pickup. I think that since they’re made by Fender, people have this conception that they’re not “boutique” or “vintage” enough...which is kind of weird to me. They’re Fenders for godsake. Yeah...I love my Lindy Fralins but that’s a story for another day. At a certain point, you just have to play...
Something i didn’t know until recently is 1954-55 Strat pickups are actually different from every other year. The D pole piece is the tallest on a 54-55 Strat. I have a 70th anniversary 1954 Strat and it sounds noticeably different from any other Strat I’ve played
It's always a toss up for me. I'm a big fan of Alexander Pribora's (these seriously need to be checked out by every Strat player on the planet), David Allen's, or Lindy Fralins. But I've had some killer sets of Tone Emporium and Lollars as well. It all depends on what you're looking for.
I have a set of fender 57/62 that I have struggled with at times. I am a constant adjuster and experimenter. I have played strats all my life and still need to keep the middle pickup low so I can play well. Especially with the non beveled magnets which can be sharp. I like plugging a guitar into an amp and playing. The best sounding guitar I have is a tele with Texas specials. I may try the fat 50s or the Texas Specials in the strat but honestly I can make the 57/62 work. They are not bad pickups. Peace
hey wade i have a strat with the 57/62 in it and they are a bit lifeless but i have stuck with them my favorite PU is the PU's i have in my other strat the fender CS69 pickups they are awesome they would be the perfect middle road between the 57/62 and the texas specials. btw did you know K wise the 57/62 are fenders lowest reading after market pickups at 5.6K i feel the TS pickups are a bit to "hot" "messy" "dirty" and treble heavy BUT that is just me. i want my pickups to be like an amp with huge clean head room then i can use the pickups like i would the amp as a super clean platform that i can "color" with my amp and pedals.
@@bengalvin9932 Interesting. My Mexican Fender 60th Anniversary 50's Classic Player Strat came new with the '57/'62 set. There are my readings:
Neck 5.65
Middle 6.86
Bridge 5.68
Hope this is useful 👍
I have rumplestiltskin black rope pickups in my broadcaster. That guitar sounds incredible. NEVER taking those out. Rumplestiltskin are VERY damn good
Fender used a car battery to guss the magnet and as I wore down it would give weaker magnet they would just toss them in a box and pick at random 6 for each bobbin that’s why pre CBS sound so different
Hi. Please I ask you to answer a question. I know there are multiple factors involved in the final sound of a pickup.
Between what values would the resistance of the three pickups have to oscillate to obtain the typical stratocaster sound of a lifetime?.
Thank you very much for answering.
I'd love to find out more about vintage pots vs current production pots and what you think is important in getting that vintage tone related to the pots, what current production pots you think come closest, etc.
I use VIP pots and Bourns. So close. They have the magic!
I’ve tried so many pickups over the years to get close to smart of 1962 pickups I’d heard...
Nothing even came close.
The color of those pickups.... indescribable.
I’ve quit trying to hunt down a set, just using the stock pickups in an old Strat I use.
Someday I’ll find a set...
It is because they make neither the wire nor the alnico like they used to the modern stuff has impurities in the wire that actually contribute to the tone same with the magnets even at the same gauss level a newer formula alnico will sound a little different. I think the winding of them and such a lot of people can do (like Mark Foley)
Try Kloppmann Real 62 pickups, they are awesome
I'm a fan of the Seymour Duncan Antiquity II Surfer Set. Got kind of a Rory Gallagher tone goin on
Nice video . I started playing guitar in 1963 . At that time , most of the guys I hung out with played Gibsons because the Fenders had a thin sound . Everybody loved Fender amps , The first time I heard a Strat was through a 50watt piggyback Bassman . Unbelieveable cool sound . It would have been about 1964 , and it blew my Gibson guitar / Supro amp out of the water .Everybody has their own opinion on tone . That is why we all own so many guitars . They are all cool in their own way !
Do you have any suggestions for specs for setting up a guitar for this stye of music? I know you like high action, but what would be a good start in terms of neck relief and action height? Thanks.
Just set it up normal , however it feels comfortable to play for
You!
Thanks for the info! Hey, what do you think about Lollars?
Great pickups. Great reputation
Man thank you so much!!!! I have Don Mares Jr. Watson set in my partscaster since 2007 and they are killer!!! I remembered it having an RMC vintage Cap. I don’t remember the value 🤦♂️- I a knuckle head and don’t want to open up the partscaster- I was hoping you could tell me what is a great cap value for a vintage Stratocaster tone? Thank you 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Stock value i
Guess , if
Thats what you are looking for
@@theriffwniksevigny5473 I don’t know what that is would you mind telling me please? 🙏🙏🙏
I think there are a lot of good pickups, just choose one and try it. I've had a set of Don Mare Stratocaster pickups that I love but I'd probably be very happy with several other brands so just rock what you got.
I have a Don Mare Donocaster bridge and '53 style neck (chromed brass cover) in my Tele. Got them about 3 years ago, when he was more accessible and the wait time was only about 2 months. Another winder mentioned in this thread is Aaron Campbell (Rumpelstiltskin Pickups). I have one of his late 60's type sets in my Stratocaster. I would have bought Mares again, but Aaron also has a great reputation, was over-the-top in prompt and friendly communication, and so accommodating in helping me decide on which pickups and what specs to use. His wait time was only 10 weeks. I'll never part with either set!
If you dive deep into pickups, it's a science for itself !!! You can study it for years !!!
The rabbit hole!!
I've spent a lot of time and money on this issue with my fender custom shop strats, I should probably make a video about it but I'll cut to the chase. The best modern pickups I have are the ones that came on my Rory Gallager fender custom shop strat. The measurements are, neck 5.94K / 2.15 H - normal wound, middle 6.01K / 2.15 H - normal wound, bridge 5.97K / 2.18H - normal wound. The H stands for henrys, a measure of inductance, the lower that number the higher the frequency that the coil will allow without choking it out. The way a pickup is wound has the biggest effect on the inductance. Also your pickup resistance will change with temperature! Nik I dare you to measure your picups on a hot day vs a cold day :) they won't be the same readings. I don't own any vintage strats but the Rory is probably the best sounding strat I've played out of all the custom shop stuff I've had a chance to play.
Yes. H is a unit of inductance. And absolutely. Temp will change the value reading, i was just using the readings as a reference. Also keeping the guitars in the same room. Same temp
I think part of that old school sound is the full plate shielding (that functions as a ground also) along with the .1uf capacitor and old school pots. My understanding was that much like neck plates, pickups were just kinda randomly selected and placed... there was no reverse wound reverse polarity either.
Maybe I'm wrong though, I'd love to get corrected if I am
Don't forget the little things add up, too. The quality and materials of pots, switches, germanium capacitors, resistors and even type of solder. An old friend recreated a 64 Strat out of old original parts down to the cloth wire jackets. Absolutely beautiful!
I have tried many different pickups, and this may sound surpising, but out of all of the cheap'ish' options from fender, custom shop 69s sound really great. They don't seem like 1969 pickups however; they seem more early 60s. They have the lowest output out of all of fender's custom shop range - and the neck pickup is one of the nicest I've ever heard. The only words to describe the neck pickup on the 69s is rich, chimey, singey, bell like. But they are still very full and not bright as many people believe them to be. With a rosewood.board and the right amp, they can sound very beefy and still sing like nothing else!
Yes! I used them in a hendrix inspired strat. Nice mellow tones!
65 -69 custom shop pickup have the lowest output, and sound really good! Also I prefer the other custom shop 50 something pickups better than the fat 50s
So which ones do you say will give a better tone, the actual ones from the 50's or the new ones like Bluebirds, Lollar, and many others?
Great video, but fat 50s in the mid 6 to upper 6k range except the neck usually around 5.7 I’m looking for some closer to 5.3-5.8 what other pickups would be close..
Hi...I have a vintage 65 strat, except the pickups. I know that's is difficult to get an original vintage pickups..so what do you suggest? Thank you very much!
In my experience Strat pickups in the sub 6K range are my favorite. Bright but not harsh. When it comes to PAF pickups high 7k and un potted. I think low output pickups are a bit brighter which i prefer and respond better to volume and tone controls. Just my 2 cents. Good guitar tone to me especially in a band situation can never be bright enough. Low end mud is the enemy of good tone. Bass off tone on 10 on old Marshalls!!!
I have some singles and a set of P90’s from RC Pickups Robert Conley. Building a Strat now and I bought a set of Suhr ML. We shall see
Please keep us posted!
Right on. My '63 strat pickups read (at the solder buttons on the bobbin) bridge. 5.98,mid. 6.07, neck 6.09. That's the way it came from the factory (not a huge difference). But, I thought I should swap the neck for the bridge, like the reissue pickups (hot bridge, weak neck). I wish I hadn't (I had to extend the bridge PU wires) because it sounded better the way it came. This is opposite of what pickup makers suggest. I put them back the way they came. I think it's better to have the lower ohm pickup on the bridge because you can raise it close at the bridge and magnate pull there won't give you overtones like it will at the neck, and it just works great close to the strings. Much better tone all 'round. Did they measure them in '63 and intentionally install them that way? Probably not,but who know's? Nobody's talkin'. Since your '59 is like that, maybe it was intentional. Should we argue with Leo? Probably not. Great video,as are all your videos, thanks. Peace.
Ah man. What great info. Always tone hunting! Thanks for your interest and comment. I appreciate it!
@@theriffwniksevigny5473 The funny thing about it is,the pickups are pretty much 6 OHM pickups. It shouldn't have made much of a difference to swap them but it did. At least to my ears. I've owned the ax since 1977,but didn't try the swap til around 2014. I guess i was just used to it so much that I could tell. I used it 5 to 6 nights a week, playing clubs, etc. I still gig with it. Okay, have fun.
thanks for sharing very interesting.. fat 50 have Neck: 6.26K, Middle: 6.34K, Bridge: 6.43K, Inductance Neck: 2.49 Henries, Middle: 2.5 Henries, Bridge: 2.63 Henries... perhaps a alittle hotter? or is a good election?
any toughts on 63 Klein set?...
Hello, looking at your guitars do you have your tremolo plate against the guitar body or it just barley up? thanks..........
Against the body
On my new players strat with alnicos the bridge reads 8.31 mid-7.86 and neck-7.40...should i swap the neck and bridge?
Squawk EE that’s how it should be, the strings have a wider vibration over the neck and therefore generate a stronger signal, so you want a weaker output for the neck
I like the fat 50,s pickups too , but I like the custom 54’s a little better, have you tried them?
Hi. Amazing video! I am from Brazil, and I bought many years ago a 65 Strat very good. The seller said to me that the pickps it was not original (blues Lindy Fraylin). So, I m looking a good picks set, that I ll get a near similar of the original. Do you suggest someone? I know that the wright thing would be try to find originals pickups, but its very difficult and too much expensive. Thank you very much.
Remember, the cables and clip leads may add a touch but u have a 250k pot in parallel with it so that lowers your reading slightly.
......said that right in the video! It was just to get a reference. Not actual values
Can you make a video including inductance readings of the pre CBS pickups aswell?
I bought a 93 strat plus in mint condition recently and I really dig those lace sensor gold pickups. I know many of you probably don't consider them to be real strat pickups but they sure sound amazing to me. What do you guys think about them? Also I have an American Deluxe Ash Tele with those SCN pickups. Alot of people didn't care for them but I found after adjusting them very carefully that they were awesome also. They did sound bad if you don't spend the time to get them adjusted perfectly. I am a geek when it comes to adjusting pickups on any guitar and I have found that a lot of guys never think to even try to adjust pickups and instead just assume they need to throw money out for expensive pickups. Don't get me wrong as some of those boutique pickups are amazing for sure but a little time adjusting pickups and listening goes a long way.
How much are the jm rolph strat pickups?
Hey man Can you help me?
Im getting a set wound. And me and the winder are discussing a way to get the unpotted tone but with low microphonics.
Should i pot the bobbins / magnets but not the coils?
Lacquer dip the coils just for 1 second?
Tape the coils?
Tight wind them and no pot?
What do you suggest?
I have a set of unpotted strat pickups that are the BEST ive ever heard but they squeel with just a little volume
Try lacquer dipping. And let them cure. Maybe?...
@@theriffwniksevigny5473 Have you experienced any tone difference with potting?
Well. You can look at it two ways
A little microphonics can be cool and useable
But a squealing pickup is no fun
So, i guess , to me, playing the guitar and having a manageable tone is what i would want.
And no, despite doing back to back tests, the difference isn’t significant to my ears
@@theriffwniksevigny5473 Good to know. I might try a 1 second dip in Lacquer see if that does it.
What's the difference between Don's Rockin Robins vs Super Sport? I'm a strat novice.
I consider myself a guitar player. Lol So yes high 6’s / 7’s are hot 🥵
Thoughts on putting real vintage pickups in a more modern guitar?
J. M Rolph's aren't new to the scene, maybe just new to you, but I put Rolphs above the next group of Mares, Customshop Fenders, Bareknuckle's and also put the Rolphs one group below vintage originals, which still seem to have that little extra goodness in them. My current view of today.
Yes. That was a slip up. He is a legend.
What would u do to a super reverb reissue to increase headroom. Josh smith says he biases it for more headroom. Is that all i need to do?
Lower wattage pre amp tubes like 5751s and higher powered speaker. Watch nik video on his Deluxe Reverb in getting a more Texas Blues tone
Just like Dakota said!
Thanks
That’s interesting Nick that the ohms goes backwards most big winders do the opposite
Has anyone ever tried own a set of Mark Foleys pickups? I ordered a set of his Big Iron Low Winds today.
Matthew Gregg I had 5 sets, brst I tried ! Still wanna try the Ron Rllis and Don Mare pups
I've got Wilkinson pickups .
have you ever tried genuine vintage pre cbs pickups in a modern Stratocaster?
Yea! Cool sounds!
I have a set of Texas specials they’re alright, what are your thoughts on the 57/62s?
Texas specials are to hot ..stick with the 57/62s if you want the vintage sound
@@davidwile1277 I played a set and fell in love with them they are opposites to me compared to the Texas specials and I really wanna try pure vintage 59s as well
I have kloppman mark Foley and don mare pickups. Jm rolph is next on my list. Kingtone bluebird pickups are out of stock everywhere you have any clue when they'll be back in stock?
I just saw him making a new batch this week
@@theriffwniksevigny5473 ok cool I'll purchase a set when i get a email since I'm on the email list. But there's probably alot of ppl ahead of me. I saw some for sale on reverb 2 weeks when i first came across your videos. By the time i got around to thinking of purchasing it it was gone.
Which of them u like most?
@@user-mu5hu4it9n the mark Foley
@@aaronbrown0417 it’s best strat pickups?
Great topic to woodshed over ! Ive been experimenting with Planet tone's Dg set they are pretty fat sounding their stagered pole and EQ'ed more in the mid / low frequency they are a little hotter but height adjustments are the key factor i found setting the neck and middle position bit lower nails that sweet spot
Awesome info. Thanks so much for the interest! I appreciate it
What makes it sound best on RUclips (?)
Thanks Nik. Were the Rumple Stiltskins you tried the ones they are calling The Experience.... based on the old gray era?
Yes. But they were black bobbin
Yes, Texas Specials are overrated. I've always said that if you want an SRV tone, get some Fat 50s Pickups.
I'm a fan of David Allen and Smitty pickups. Not cheap but they're incredible.
I'll second Smitty pickups, great pickups
