So, in 2007 I didn't have decent video editing software. The video desyncs because (I assume) it was PAL 25 FPS. Remember NTSC and PAL? Ah, the good old days, when men were men and video was interlaced, and, well, poor people...
The interesting thing, during the election when DC stood for PM second time around, there were some of his MPs who said no one under £20,000 salary should be able to vote.... or something similar... interestingly ... the new statesmen joked "THE ONLY WAY YOU'RE GOING TO WIN HACKNEY IS TO STOP POOR PEOPLE VOTING! " ALAN: TONY! WHAT A GREAT IDEA!!!!!!!
Rik was very politically minded, he was a staunch supporter of the Labour Party and often endorsed them (though he publicly admonished Tony Blair for his actions during the second Iraq war) and took part in rallies. So it makes you wonder, how much of the script for The New Statesman reflected his own views on the Tories policies though he would’ve exaggerated them for comic effect
Sort of, he's saying that if the Tories had there way all the good schools would be private (public) where the fees for a term (there are three of them) are very expensive.
In the good olds days, you were rich... you got hated... and you get your head chopped off. And yet these days, tories seemed to have to god given right to be alive. And what had that given us? Hmm? More tories. If it were up to me, we would abolish rich people, gain all their wealth and that would end poverty. And they say peasants had no heart. 😀😊
One question to some native speaker: Earlier in the speech, B'stard says: "nothing wrong with the education system that couldn't be put right with £2,500 a term, is there?". I'm not a native speaker, but a huge fan of the show, and I want to understand the joke, since this speech is one of it's most brilliant moments. Is the joke just that he is saying that since education is so damn expensive, there can't be anything wrong with it?
He's saying that all schools should have fees, which is totally illogical if you believe everyone has a right to education, because many people can't afford to pay fees. That's how out of touch he is, or it could be said therefore that he doesn't believe you should be educated if you can't afford it, so it shows how little he cares. It all goes hand in hand.
He’s saying that free government-funded schools are rubbish and private schools that cost £2500 in 1990s money a term are good. Stereotypical Tory thinking
its funny, but thats EXACTLY what the planet needs. far fewer poor people. people in general actually. poor, rich, middle class. the root of the environmental crisis is people. get rid of people, get rid of the problem. simple.

Hello
One day Jeremy Hunt is just going to snap and repeat this speech verbatim, with no hint of irony.
This post was 6 year ago.
It is now 2022... And look what's happening
Mind. Blown.
George Orwell said 'be careful what you joke about, because there will always be some idiot listening who thinks it's a good idea.'
+Gary Barker The irony of this comment is not lost on me....deep sigh
The interesting thing, during the election when DC stood for PM second time around, there were some of his MPs who said no one under £20,000 salary should be able to vote.... or something similar... interestingly ... the new statesmen joked "THE ONLY WAY YOU'RE GOING TO WIN HACKNEY IS TO STOP POOR PEOPLE VOTING! ALAN: TONY! WHAT A GREAT IDEA!!!!!!!
Good comment Gary, but Rik wasn't joking.
@@renlentlesstourist7574, you're going to have to provide a source for that claim. I'm struggling to find any proof of it.
I can say that this has aged perfectly well 😂 I love this
So topical. I loved Rik Mayall. Such a sad loss.
Wow!... now I know where BORIS got all his ideas from.
Bob Crippen: "Do you like hospital food, pal?" Alan B'Stard: "I love it! But of course, I'm in BUPA!"
Genius. RIP Rik we still miss you..
Oh Rik. even when im laughing at him, it's tinged with sadness now. He should still be here :(
I thought this was supposed to be satire...not real life.
Rik was a master of telling the truth through comedy no matter how absurd/horrifying it may sound.
This is Liz Truss running in the 2022 Tory leadership debate
Rik acted this out well but Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran created a scarily accurate character.
Scott D They predicted the Trump/Farage Conservative.
@@cityhawk Basically the way BJ thinks.
Terrifyingly accurate foreshadowing.
Boris bloody Britain god help anyone born now
The great thing about the new statesman is that people of all politics can enjoy it
I miss that funny bastard, RIP Rik.

in the show alan begins supporting the labour party
They're barely exaggerated though, really.
The best tv show ever! B'stard is my IDOL!
Rik Mayall would've been a great PM
Awesome scene..
Herd immunity for covid 19 anyone?
R.I.P.
I love that line especially. Its so funny.
This is brilliant.
This is happening right now in 2022.
Reminiscent of today!
David Cameron
Jeremy Hunt the cunt i think is more accurate :)
Although Cameron is equally to blame as he had the final say.
And Matt Hancock has now implemented it...
Sort of, he's saying that if the Tories had there way all the good schools would be private (public) where the fees for a term (there are three of them) are very expensive.
I joined the Conservative Party to be just like Alan Bstrd.
Well he is honest at least
A comic genius
LMAO
on the good old days you were poor you got ill then you died haha i love the look on his face at: 00:27 lol
So relevant right now.
Coronavirus.
This is actual Tory ideology.
Unfortunately most of the Tory MP's can't separate satire from reality
The disturbing thing is, they're actually *like* that!
Perfect lol

The French always come up with the best solutions
This also works for the Australian liberal party here haha
FRIENDS OF ST JAMES! lol
Merry Fucking Christmas. 🎄
yes i think so...thats how i got the joke :-)

That's also why he says the line "that's why we need schools like this, to keep us (the rich) away from them (the poor)"
This was a 80s show. Now it's £6000 per term.
He’s saying that free government-funded schools are rubbish and private schools that cost £2500 in 1990s money a term are good. Stereotypical Tory thinking
ROTFLMAO!!!
Audio is not synchronized.
If you could get the truth out of Andrew Lansley this is what you would hear him say (0:10)
Retrato "premonitorio" de Mauricio Macri. Bueno, la derecha... en fin.
Rik is good at acting druggie!
Appeal to the Extremes fallacy.
His poverty eradication funnily enough is incredibly socialist.
its funny, but thats EXACTLY what the planet needs. far fewer poor people. people in general actually. poor, rich, middle class. the root of the environmental crisis is people. get rid of people, get rid of the problem. simple.
I was never a Rick Mayall fan, his overacting really annoyed me. But the new statesmen is just about the only thing i can actually stand him in.
Loved Rik mayall.
