A couple of wonderful reel's here played effortlessly by the great Tony MacMahon, lovely switch between tunes. Turf fire music in an old thatch cottage, warm friends united in story dance and song, what better way to lock a cold world outside?
How far this great man has come over the years, out of all the Castle Kelly tunes heard Tony just plays it how it should be played. But when paired up with Noel Hill, well that's another story..
@brendantheprettygood It seems that this clip has been removed from youtube repeatedly and I'm guessing that it's because of copyright and TM. I'm hoping this one will survive for a bit longer if I don't use the full name or tags. It's too good a clip to not have available, especially for study by box players! So what did you think of the clip?
it is taken from a programme called the country airs. this clip was shown on the second programme of the first series of come west along the road' back in 1994. the programme was originally shown in November 1963.
He was the very best we will ever hear... but I'm sure he hoped there would be fellas coming up that would be just as good if not better - if better was possible...
Ah ok. I found it last night after a loooong search (couldn't remember his name) because I saw it a few years back. I remember how annoyed I was when it was taken off so thank you for re-uploading, it's one of my favourite videos!
At 40 seconds in you can see that his Paolo Soprani accordion is missing the fingerboard cover! The grille is also shrouded by some kind of thin screen. I wonder if this is one of Cooley's old boxes?
Interesting keys the first in C and the second in Aminor. Nowadays fiddlers etc would do them in D and Emin. So was he up and down the C row on a B/C box? Very nioce to see this old archival clip
So many musicians and singers got their first broadcast outings through Ciaran Mac Mathuna who sadly never moved far beyond Limerick or Clare thus depriving many others the same opportunity
@dchamps321 Sorry I don't have more info about the clip - an older Irish person might recognise the presenter or the show which I believe was on RTE. I only re-uploaded it when it disappeared from elsewhere!
@@MrColough that's a statement ...not a comment.... intense man or not and I know I've heard and seen him and disagreed with him.....but he looks bored. .. .
The best box player this country has ever produced. RIP.
You,re so right.
So smooth! I've heard these tunes played alot but he gives them a whole different feel.
R.I.P. Tony..9th October 2021
Myself and my lovely da listened to Tony and Barney every week when they were touring Europe. We loved them.
My favourite instrument... great musician
This great man, Joe Cooley, Charlie Harris, Conor Keane and many others do justice for the C#D style of accordion playing!!
I love the pace.

In this old video you see a young and talented Tony MacMahon, and you can hear his warm sound already.he must be in his early 20 ...
Lovely interesting unique style

Brilliant

A beautiful turn at 1.20,a young Finbar Furey appreciates the majesty of Tony Mc Mahon's playing, great clip, thanks.
Too bad they didn’t have a clip of Tony, Finbar and Eddie all playing together
What a great pairing of tunes. Masterful player. Much to study here.
The guitar is playing itself!
tony is the master of the box in my book

tony always has a lovely rolling style and, as seamus ennis once said, the only accordeon player to vary the volume.
It was a great clip and defiantly worth saving. He looks so young in this video. I really like the Castle Kelly I wanna give it a go.
He was the very best we will ever hear... but I'm sure he hoped there would be fellas coming up that would be just as good if not better - if better was possible...
This is peak mcmahon beautiful stuff
Isn't it nice to hear a sweet player,no rasping, tearing or mullicking, just an expert at work at his ease.
Darn right.
tony is in the pantheon of the greats
Some truly captivating playing that was!
That's an exciting pair of tunes and of course the playing. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks to mcnamc1 for identifying the presenter as "the great Ciarán Mac Mathúna. Died 2009 RIP."
Hipster Tony McMahon! Nice glasses.
Wow!

I like this one very much..
I wonder what it would sound like if there was an acompanienent of a banjo with rhe 2nd reel
way ahead of his time
An interesting piece..well done for upload. You can already hear his ear for melody .
At 40 seconds in you can see that his Paolo Soprani accordion is missing the fingerboard cover! The grille is also shrouded by some kind of thin screen. I wonder if this is one of Cooley's old boxes?
Great stuff! This was removed some time ago. Video now not great but music still good.

Very nioce to see this old archival clip
They really looked like they were enjoying themselves in those days
The furry is behind him, class☘️
Cool!
So many musicians and singers got their first broadcast outings through Ciaran Mac Mathuna who sadly never moved far beyond Limerick or Clare thus depriving many others the same opportunity
Well spotted
Irish music is cool!
Is that Finbar Furey behind him with the pipes?
No I think it's his dad Ted
No. It is Eddie Furey.
Finbar, Eddie and their father Ted was on the program as well. That’s young Finbar behind Tony MacMahon with his pipes.
Go raibh suaimhneas agus solas geal ort go brách a Antoin. RIP.
he looks a lot older than 17!
Tony was 24 when this recording was made. Finbar Furey was about 17 at that time.
Up the banner
1954
What show is this taken from? Is there any more footage from it? Good effort for the upload!
Has anybody noticed the missing fingerboard@
is there a drum in that box? :)
Very enjoyable but from face alone, I can't tell if he's playing a jaunty tune or watching East Enders.
Nut
Why not use his full name?

gGád he looks even more bored than the audience
Ah, no. An intense character of a man.
