Thanks so much for your help, Adam. Ill give it a try. Look like it's beyond my tech ability, but nothing ventured, nothing gained. Cheerio.

Had top and bottom off, couldn't see how to get the tuning unit out past all the wires, just gave up and put it back together. The whole shaft is frozen and won't turn even with pliers.!!! Time to move on. Anybody got an FT 891 in working order for sale?

Thank you for your video. I had the very same issue and with your video I had the confidence to tackle this fix. I was able to disassemble the radio and optic encoder and remove the gunk from shaft. It operates like a new radio now!

Thanks for this. Mine had siezed and i was rather despairing. I was galvanised into action with your video and tackled mine. It works again but is still very stiff...i even stripped the spindle down to component level and cleaned / regreased, but its still stiff. Still, it moves!!

Had this FT-757GX for two weeks and the shaft seized. Plates inside are fine but I did have to remove and disassemble the encoder to clean and grease the shaft. they made a little recessed pocket to hold grease on the shaft and alas mine had none. Thanks for the video!

Mine just froze up today. I was changing frequencies and it got stiff and then stopped. I knew this video was on here some where. Sure wish there was more on disassembly and reassembly of the VFO. I am no way a electronics person, but have done some minor things.

I have removed, disassembled & cleaned these encoders & re-lubed their bearing shafts. In one case I had to shim the shaft due to excessive wobble - not an ideal fix but it worked! Also, from time to time, the replacement encoders become available via eBay from owners parting out their rigs.

Thanks for the video. I’m currently repairing a Kenwood TS-970A, which uses the same encoder. I disassembled the encoder and it seems that the rear optic wheel is loose on the shaft. Nothing appears to have moved or come loose, but it still slips when turning the shaft and skips steps when tuning. Your repair was the direction that I was going, but I wanted to see if I was on the right track. I bought this radio at a hamfest, about 3 weeks ago, so it’s a little late to return it to the previous owner. It’s a shame that the manufacturers can’t continue to supply such a problematic part.

I just bought a 757 which instantly smoked when power was applied (probably damaged in shipping, was not well packed) Anyway, I am thinking that if ruined... I can take the God assembly and install it in a probe t box making it an external VFO. Is there a reason I cannot?

Thanks for the video. Sure wish you had more on the disassembly and reassembly of the VFO and the encoder. I have a 757gx and just today the VFO froze up on me. I had seen this video before when I was searching RUclips for FT-757gx videos. Again thanks for sharing this information. If you have any information about the repair, my email is good on QRZ dot com. 73 WD8WV
