  • Shiv Bhairav
is a unique solo choreographic work in the traditional Kathak dance form, depicting the fierce deity, Bhairav. The choreography seamlessly integrates traditional Kathak elements, ensuring that the audience doesn’t miss any aspect of the dance style. The narrative unfolds through the structured sequence of Kathak: starting with Thaath*, followed by footwork, *Uthaan*, *Aamad*, toda and tukras, and ending with *Paran and *Nikas*, the choreography shows origin story of Lord Bhairava, all while maintaining the essence of Kathak.
The origin story goes like this
In the Brahma Purana, there are two stories about the origin of Bhairav. The first story states that when Lord Shiva was insulted, a power emerged from Shiva and severed Brahma's head, which was known as Bhairav. The second story tells that when Goddess Parvati assumed the form of Kali to kill the demon Daruka, her anger could not be pacified. In response, Lord Shiva manifested as a young boy, Bhairav, to calm Kali’s rage. Bhairav, in his form as Bhatuk Bhairav, performs dance and calms Goddess Kali. It is also said that Lord Bhairava liberates his devotees from the effects of tantra-mantras, curing all ailments and flaws.
The composition beautifully blends Teen Taal and Chautaal*, with the melody of *Raag Bhairav enhancing the intensity of the performance. The inspiration for this piece came from the powerful energy of Lord Bhairav, motivating the artist Dr. Samiksha Sharma to present this work. The choreographer sought guidance from their guru, Pandit Rajendra Gangani, who provided profound words and helped develop the ability to express both the concrete and Abstract aspects of Bhairav through Kathak.
