  • At this seminar, our own Dark Master-Joseph Goodman-was joined by James Enge, Chris Hocking, Howard Andrew Jones, and Michael Curtis where they discussed the sword and sorcery books and stories that are in Appendix N, and the sword and sorcery titles that we think SHOULD have been included.

I want to applaud Hocking's statement "reading a book on a computer feels like more work" (it does to me) and also his proclamation "The Spider brings it home!"
King of the Red Killers, The Spider and His Hobo Army, The Corpse Cargo, and The City Destroyer are unbelievably crazy, exciting, and inventive pulp adventures featuring the gleefully homicidal Spider character. For my money, nobody EVER wrote more exciting and imaginative action sequences than Norvell W. Page--the author of these issues, writing under the house name, Grant Stockbridge. The fellow was an unhinged, maniacal, and towering talent in many genres. So much passion and energy in his work...
And I got to know Howard Jones years ago when I sent him a thank you email for his reprints of the superb works of Harold Lamb. I grew up reading (and still enjoy) Edgar RIce Burroughs and RE Howard, but I've not read a story by either that matches Lamb's Alamut, Making of the Morning Star, and The Star of Evil Omen.
I'd put Blackwood's The Willows--also mentioned in this program---way, way up there too, alongside fantasy and horror classics like The Fortress Unvanquishable, Save for Sacnoth (Lord Dunsany), The Last Magician (David H Keller), Isle of the Torturers & The Colossus of Ylourgne & The Dark Eidolon (CAS), and Dreamquest of Unknown Kadath & The Dunwich Horror (HPL)
Thanks for doing this. It was fun and purchases were made!

With all do respect, for pushing Appendix N so much the "0th level funnel" stuff in DCC RPG makes zero sense in the context of ANY of those Appendix N novels. Been voraciously reading them (in particular the ones Gygax said were the "most immediate" influences: REH, Leiber, de Camp & Pratt, Merritt, Vance, Lovecraft) and not one of them has anything close to "starting as a grubby peasant and going through a meatgrinder to 'earn' the right to become a hero". That funnel concept is the #1 reason I cannot get into the DCC RPG because it feels so ridiculous.
