I learned a lot from this whiteboard session!! I started a small icon studio about a year ago, it's just me doing all the client work and hustling on my own goals for this studio, and it was really chaos that I couldn't manage my time at all. Then I found your whiteboard session "How to run a studio" and keep repeating that video until I have enough balls to scale up. The good news is, I just recruited one junior designer not long ago to mentor and help me do the work, and it's all because of your contents!! Thanks a lot Chris!! Now I can focused on growing the studio.

Just for clarification, the 9k are not in the bank but 800 per project but the automated and scalable sales system is $$$ that is not attached to hours, plus 2200 is damn high with tiny margin, that expense needs to be revisited and improved. 🙏🚀

Interesting point on coaching the gap which I’d love to be expanded on more future videos as there’s more designers wanting better quality of workplace but still contribute to a company instead of owning a business. The thing is that many businesses expectations is that you come 100% on their project vision and that 25% help is omitted. How can the futur better equip these designers to have a fighting chance and come to better terms with their employers?

Great content as always, no doubt about that. The message is the right one and I totally dig it. Still, at 51:20 the guy made a point right there.
You cant take the 3k USD into consideration for the potential IG leads. You need to calculate that with the gross profit of 800 USD, because you are using feelancers to do the job. That leaves you with 3x800 = 2400 USD (25% scenario) vs 2420 USD for the investment.
Again, the basic approach of outsourcing work that other can do is of course the way to go, but the comparison wasn't fair there.

    • @hallchris
      @hallchris 4 года назад +3

Right - I was frustrated by that comparison, and wish the questioner dug into it a bit (you could tell he really wanted to discuss gross revenue v. net profit).
Ultimately, the $ potential + external opportunities still teeters toward hiring out, but the point would have been more impactful if addressed, esp. when scalability is taken into account (ie, What if you pick up 4 leads per post? 10?)

I know that this is for designers, but I own a security company and your business principles apply almost universally. So I'm learning from you. In regards to hiring people, of course I can do the job better than most, because I'm highly experienced, trained, educated (in security management), and I'm really good at what I do. But I can't protect everyone or every client's property by myself. So the alternative is to teach others how to do it my way, and then pay them to do so. So in my case, hiring others to do the job isn't even a question, it's absolute.

Doing it yourself forces you to create better systems to do the work that could help reduce opportunity cost of the labor - which you can use to better estimate the cost of the work and provide proof it can be done efficiently for freelancers who are not as adept as you lol plus you can charge them for the system. Both A + B find a way - Divs work when you have large sums of money to contribute regularly = passive income that allows lifestyle - I say try to get "rich" quick and then hire more people is the way to go. Upper left quadrant: urgent/ important = Do Now

Upper right quadrant: not urgent / important = Decide/Schedule when to do it
Lower right quadrant: not urgent / not important = Delete / eliminate the task

What I understand is that if you outsource your "first" job you would earn less money ($800), but it gives you time (20 hours). When you spend that time on marketing and closing more deals you would have more jobs to work on. What will happen if you leverage that. Let's say you get 3 new jobs from marketing and you again outsource that? That would mean you would have 3 times the amount of time available on the first job. That would be 60 hours on marketing and 3 x $800 in your pocket. That would theoretically mean you could gain 3 x more new jobs after that. That would be 9 new jobs. Now we all have to make a living so at some point you might want to do 1 job yourself and outsource 8 jobs? Of course this outcome would be when you are consistent and the results are consistent.
It makes total sense to take little profit at the start to grow your business income stream. You could also do it the way around. You do the job and you hire someone to do marketing for you that could do it better and faster. That would cost less money and takes less time.

I think I see his point. Your math says 2% of 15 leads, converting 7 of those leads at $3k a piece is $21k. But he's not making $3k per job, he's paying other people to do the work so he's only making $800 per conversion. So it's more like 15 leads * 50% * $800 = $5600. Which is still more than the $2400.

52:50 how you messed it up is: If his plan is to delegate the work, he's only bringing in 800 per client, not 3000. So he's looking at 2400 vs 2200, not 9k vs 2200. Plus it will take some time to delegate and manage the 3 additional projects. I'd still go with option B because of the other benefits, but you're assuming he wants to spend 60 hours doing the next 3 projects himself. Still, great content!

52:48 Yes, you're comparing cash with revenue.
In case A I have $2420 and can cash out anytime.
In case B I made $9k but spent $6.6k hiring people and a lot more time dealing with the leads once I've got them.
So I can make $2.4k working 20hrs then doing nothing or $2.4k working 20hrs then working some more.
I understand the overall argument but this example just doesn't check out. If I am given the choice between both options and that is exactly how they are, I will pick A.

Fatal math mistake, but still worth it, 800 profit per project does not give you 9k for 3 projects(-220) or 21k for 7 projects (5600)
