    We've waited a long time for the newest installment of the Final Fantasy VII Remake Franchise, now we just need to ask ourselves if FF7 Rebirth does the original justice, or if it's just overhyped nonsense.
    Even though I'm a fanboy of the original, I honestly wasn't too fond of the "original" Remake, so I was really apprehensive coming into Rebirth. It may have helped finally being away from Midgar, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much more I preferred this version to the Remake.
    Even so, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is not without its issues, and the devs constantly hand-holding the players and shoving players into doing near-mandatory sidequests leads to a lot of pacing problems that may turn some people away from the game. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed it, and while the devs do make some missteps here and there, the differences have me intrigued and excited for the conclusion to the "Unknown Journey," especially the relationships between Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Zack, and Sephiroth.
    Sorry if the color balancing is all over the place in the review; I recently got an HDR monitor and had a really difficult time capturing those colors for an SDR display, so the settings were inconsistent for my footage.

    There’s a reason rebirth is being highly praised and very well received. It’s also hits most of the main story beats from the original with some twists and turns

    Everything in this game is padded to drag out the excuse of releasing the game in 3 parts. Also if every character is still going to die or end up in the original way, then why introduce another world where they live? If things are going to change then stick to it or vice versa. Nomura showed his writing skill level I'm this remake franchise of an amazing story written by a much competent writer.

    I've never played any FF games before, and having grown with people worshiping 7 and Square Enix milking it like its the only FF game that exists, whatever drive I had to even touch the game is dead, but I'm happy to see any sort of remake doing its original game justice.
    As for your personal rating system, which games have gotten the closest to a 10, if any even reached that?

      it's not doing it any justice. play the original or don't play it at all.

      I think Super Smash Bros. Ultimate *might* be the closest to a 10. Pretty much the only things I'd change about it are allowing more customization for rebinding individual character commands, improving the netplay (this seems more of a Switch issue though,) and getting rid of really unintuitive things like "teching" off stages.

    The story will be the weakest point for most people, but I think CBU1 did what they could with the combat system given how bad they have been outside Kingdom Hearts. They've come a ways, but are still behind about every other ARPG game's combat system out there. I think trying to hybrid the combat systems might attribute to this and why I think FFXVI is better, yet that was held back by being part RPG system as well. A full action approach will always trump something like this or it could just come down to mastering the flow of combat (or something in itself).
    I'm not sure what they will do with the third game given sales fell with this, at least in Japan and Europe (no digital sales release). SE hasn't released sales overall a month later, which usually isn't a good thing as they have when they are great. If they lose money with their sacred cow, I don't think they have anything left other than desperation tactics, but never listening to fans. They have investors to adhere to.
    I watched reviews on the story changes like with Cloud attacking Tifa and never being brought up or having impact on relationship and Dyne's side-story, which were the most evident that CBU1 or SE were not willing to allow for mature, thoughtful scenes to play out or realize what narrative flow is. Some things they can add are good, which seemed to be minimal impact and the large ones just damaged the story when it had animated sequences compared to polygonal characters with dialogue boxes having more impact to them. It's amazing since XIII they have regressed in the area they led JRPGs in.
    How did Square-Enix become the Disney of Japan in the worst ways? Adding a musical of some sort into an IP (this was a desire of Nomura in the past for FFXV) and using a multi-verse plot that minimizes tension and consequence as it is undone in some fashion. I don't think the writers couldn't have realized this, but it seemed to be the only way they could make things work with not committing fully to re-writing the story (likely due to reception to Remake) and not making it an actual remake.

    • @LastProtagonist
      @LastProtagonist  3 месяца назад +1

      This is kind of a well-known "problem" for any writer. By definition, a sequel should never outsell the first installment of a series (though interest in a sequel will drive people toward the original,) so hearing about the numbers right now doesn't surprise me. Beyond that, this year is absolutely stacked in terms of titles coming out, and with the first Remake being released on PC, I wouldn't be surprised if some are holding back for a port.
      While 16's combat was alright, I felt it was a bit shallow, and while I didn't like Remake's combat much at all, I think Rebirth did a better job bridging the gap to be more like 16's, but ended up being more enjoyable for me because it's a lot more dynamic between controlling 3 characters and being able to swap materia around. I'm still not completely happy with it, and their action combat has kind of always sucked, but they're getting there.
      As for the multi-verse plot, I'm not happy with it either, but there probably wasn't a way to break the game into 3 installments, yet have it remain intriguing enough for players to want to continue. I still think it could have been fine if they ended the first installment after the flashback in Kalm and the second one here, but RIP.

      @@rommelthedesertfox3089 The minority would be the audience for the game. That's not saying much. I gave an explanation as to why they battle system is inferior to just about every other ARPG out there and no one mentions FFVII Remake/Rebirth alongside Fromsoftware games, Nioh, Dragon's Dogma, Tales of, all of which have had years to craft their gameplay. It's good for SE because they always are bad at these kind of games, but it doesn't compare to the rest.
      SE just put something together they will only use for this IP as they do with every new FF they release. You'd be disappointed if it was actually put to a ranking.

    • @blumiu2426
      @blumiu2426 3 месяца назад

      @@LastProtagonist I don't think it would be an issue if being a sequel were the case is all, but we have had sequels outsell the originals. The Yakuza series, Tales of, Ys, God of War, Gran Turismo and so on. The issue is that Remake didn't strike lightning as I think SE wanted and the fanbase disappointed with how they went about it, censorship adds to it. It's Final Fantasy VII, said to be the best FF and JRPG out there with these optics. It did less sales than FFXVI in Japan, and they were not happy with that.
      Some are likely holding out for the PC release, but no sales are given out at all still, just the physical in Japan. Pattern behavior with SE indicates it's not great or may be less across the board.
      Dynamic? Hmm. Do you mean versatile or gives you options, because XVI most definitely made to be dynamic. Itsuno was brought in to do the combat, considered the best at ARPGs with DMC and Dragon's Dogma. Clive had summons incorporated into attacks and combo chains added to. FFVII is more limited because it keeps turn-based aspects, switching between characters or team attacks seems a naturual solution to makeup for what has been said by some as sluggish compared to other ARPGs. They've gotten better, but I still think it lags behind Kingdom Heart's combat. You mainly had Sora, but the flow of combat and stringing attacks and magic together was seamless yet simple in comparison.
      If rumors back with Rebirth are to be believed, not everyone was seeing eye-to-eye on where to take the game, so it seems like they waited for reception to decide. Which turned into indecision reflected in Rebirth's direction. And I think they retconned Jessie and Wedge dying actually, because someone that played it told me they are indeed dead. Last game, Jessie was just set aside as if injured and Cloud unconcerned when he did so. Wedge got knocked out the window, but you can find him in an underground area where he fell all the way down to and talk to him. It would have been better for them to keep rejecting people desiring a remake than take pointers from an IP that ended up going down a convoluted path and be notorious for it, miring what legacy there was. I don't think it's fatigue anymore with FFVII outside of it's hardcore fans, it's apathy mainly toward Square-Enix and maybe CBU1 not seeming to be able to get things together with a solid positive reception to their games like CBU3 (well, not now with FFXVI).

    I think for me, these remakes are a confused, bloated, excessive mess. The entire projest IMHO, is a mistake. There's no soul. Its all size no scope, all detail no design, all sparkle no substance, all plot no story, all character no personality, all excess no earnestness.
    Not to mention they've chickened-out big time on the OGs critique of capitalism and strong environmental message.

    The games presentation sucks. Seeing the camera move around aimlessly in the midground is kind of a slap in the face to the power of the fixed angles and strong character blocking/placement the first game had to compensate for low visual fidelity
    Very much an empty and flat world with piles of generic gaming assets taking up space everywhere that should be properly impactful like towns and peoples homes
    The original nibelheim flashback has stronger character work showing how Sephiroth builds his new personality on faulty shinra research, showing how stunted he actually is
    This time around it's more focjsed kn smokey retcon monsters, not for me

      They already let the cat out of the bag with the original Remake, so if you're already upset over that, there's no use crying over spilled milk. There was no way they could feasibly make all 3 installments of the game at the graphical fidelity they're aiming to hit now without some concessions, and like I said, not all changes are bad, and there are quite a few I enjoy, like the banter between characters.
      But to focus solely on the story really overlooks how much work the art and music teams have put in to try and make Final "Fantasy" come to life.
