DISCLOSURE: You will have noticed that this video is clearly marked as an Ad in the title and thumbnail (in accordance with UK regulations), and marked as Paid Promotion. This is because the video was designed with the intent of promoting the film festival, which I am attending, and the interviewees were shown the edit before I posted it, so they did have some control over the content.
However, this video was something I suggested to them, and a major reason I made this is because I wanted to make a video about the Bristol IMAX, and was also excited by the story of the film festival. Thus I wanted to create a legitimate and informative piece of content, not simply just a promotional piece. This has also been a very challenging video to make, at least technically, as this is the first video to be shot largely in 4K (so shots could be reframed in post for 1080p final video); but it is also very exciting, as it gave me a chance to do something a bit different that I've always wanted to do. I did actually run out of time at the location to film all of my script, but that's part of the learning process, as this is very new for me. Hopefully there will be some more like this in the future, mixed with my regular content.
UPDATE: Since this video was produced, Glasgow's IMAX has reopened, now under the control of the Glasgow Science Centre.

Hi Mathew, I really liked this mini documentary: one thing I'd mention is that I did miss some of your smaller text captions since I'm focusing on the main part of the screen, and I'm watching on my phone. I'll watch again on my 23" PC monitor and let you know if that makes a difference.

Matthew, I think you've missed your calling as a documentarian! Really enjoyed this short doc.

With 5 Live having lost their film review program, I'd be happy to hear Mathew take over the radio slot or maybe guest on Kermode's new show!

Agreed: I think Mathew would do well in the broadcasting arena.

Over here in St. Louis, MO, we still have an old-school IMAX dome screen (OMNIMAX) at the Saint Louis Science Center. They were still using celluloid IMAX film reels until summer 2019, but that year they renovated the auditorium and installed a digital IMAX laser projector. And while I certainly do miss the analog charm of the celluloid projectors, it is still a treat to see films on that giant domed screen.
Being located in a science museum, they do primarily screen short form educational films, but they do occasionally also screen full-length features. Just recently I was able to see a screening of Dune on New Year's Eve, which was pretty sweet!

Glad to hear across the world that rare cinema is getting protected in this way. I'm glad you did your part to discuss this!

Hey I rent DVDs from Flicks every month! And I've already bought a ticket to the film festival. Really looking forward to it. I'm so glad you made a video about it.

I really like the video, you have a real knack for presenting. I like to hear you talk about picture palaces transitioning to multiplexes and your feelings on that time period.

Cineworld recently revamped the old Sheridan IMAX cinema at the Odyssey in Belfast. And NGL, I would love to see a re-release of Robots in that format.

Awesome stuff! The writing is up to the usual high Film Brain standards, and the camera work and editing are also really well done.

Great video! Looking up the schedule, it sounds absolutely amazing, especially seeing them on a massive proper IMAX screen, I only wish it weren't so ludicrously expensive to travel down to Bristol.

I lived in Bristol for quite a few years and had absolutely no idea about the existence of the abandoned IMAX. Incidentally the last film I saw in the cinema was the new Dune in IMAX ... digital, obviously - I don't think the size of screen is that important when you get the resolutions we get nowadays.

Would love to see Blade Runner on IMAX, but since I'm in that "grim north", it's a bit far. Nonetheless, all the best for the festival and hope it's a success!
