    Regarding ex 1: The proper grammatical form is to backshift the tense - "Sarah said that she drank..." although if this is a current habit, you can say "Sarah said that she drinks..." However, in this particular instance, we only have the sentence without the context, so we don't know when the sentence was spoken. What if Sarah said it two months ago and then gave up coffee? Her original words would still be "I drink black coffee every morning." But, we would only be correct in reporting, "Sarah said (two months ago) that she drank black coffee every morning." Remember that if you are unsure, just backshift the tense.
    The exception is if the sentence contains a reference to a future time that has still not arrived. Ex: My friend Raj told me this morning, "I'm getting married next month." If I had to report this to another friend today, I would say, _Raj told me this morning that he's getting married next month._ Notice that _this morning_ and _next month_ stay the same because I'm reporting the sentence on the same day in the same month.

      @LearnEnglishClass, you are really optimizing the learning experience with this comment and also when you point out, during your video, further details like, the exception for the verb "to promise", and rules like "My brother and I -> She and her brother", etc.
      Thank you so much Sir!

    I had been struggling with this topic for a long time now but after coming across this video, I would like to think that now I have a pretty decent command over this topic solely because of your explanations and everything. So thank you so much my Sir.
    I had a query regarding example no. 6 and it would be really helpful if you could give your insights regarding that. The direct speech in question no 6 was - The kid told his parents, ''I was watching TV and the power went out.'' and The Indirect speech of the given problem I had come up with was - The kid complained to his parents that the power had gone out when he had been watching tv.
    It would be really helpful if you could tell me whether I am wrong here or not. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance Sir : ).

    • @LearnEnglishLab
      @LearnEnglishLab  5 лет назад +28

      Hi Andrea, your sentence is not only correct, you've also made very good use of the reporting verb "complain." In everyday speech, though, people tend not to use too many instances of difficult tenses like the past perfect continuous. So, instead, you might hear a native speaker just say, The kid said to his parents that the power went out when he was watching TV. Strictly speaking, this is grammatically incorrect, but it gets the message across.

    Thank you so much for the great explanation!
    I totally understand it now.
    Also, one question:
    The first example is: Sarah Said, "I drink black coffee every morning."
    Normally here, it has to be: Sarah said that she drinks black coffee every morning,
    because it's a habit/fact and in that case we don't change the tense. (Well, that's what my teacher told me...)
    Thanks again!

    • @LearnEnglishLab
      @LearnEnglishLab  6 лет назад +6

      The proper grammatical form is to backshift the tense - "...said that she drank..." although if this is a current habit, you _can_ say "...said that she drinks..." However, in this particular instance, we only have the sentence without the context, so we don't know when the sentence was spoken. What if Sarah said it two months ago and then gave up coffee? Her original words would still be "I drink black coffee every morning." But, we would _only_ be correct in reporting, Sarah said (two months ago) that she drank black coffee every morning.

    Hello teacher, great job from you teaching here English thanks for it. I typed to you this comment to let you know my score, I obtained all of them quite flawless, however I answered the sentences 9 and 10 in a different way. But I would like to know if they are incorrectly answered.
    9: She told him that he should call his parents once a week.
    10: The librarian said to the visitors to turn off their cellphones.
    I would like to know if they can be used like that or they are wrong. Thanks.

    • @LearnEnglishLab
      @LearnEnglishLab  4 года назад +4

      In 9, it is better to use the verb _advise,_ but your sentence is OK.
      10 sounds unnatural because it is clearly an instruction. So, "told the visitors to" is the better form.
