I own a t1n sprinter. Had it 6yrs now. I change my own oil, fuel filter, transmission fluid, etc. I learned h ok w to do it. Super easy watching youtube. Im a girl too. There are a ton of videos on t1n sprinters. Of Florida Van man channel. You bought an awesome vehicle. Your van will get 24-26 mpg. Tgey rarely break down and are extremely reliable. Just a note, your van will take 2.5gal of oil or 10 quarts. The oil plus filter is less than $100, so start watching youtube. Youll be amazed at the info on how to diy repair your t1n sprinter.

btw, I am at Vanfest in Florida as I write this. This past weekend FloridaVanMan had a huge event for t1n sprinters. It was a blast and so many t1n sprinters showed up. Millionmilesprinter also has events like this and it is a great way to meet other t1n owners to get insight on your van. When you learn to DIY your own van you'll be so happy to have found your own. I removed my own seat to put in a swivel a lot of this stuff is so easy, it's not rocket science. Purchase yourself a metric toolkit for cheap. The oil change bolt takes a 13mm wrench. Your van is extremely easy to fix and the best thing is you can crawl under it without it having to be lifted off the ground.

Hey Dear, Resident Tow Truck Operator here, somwhat of a mechanic in my past... I don't wrench muc anymore due to health ailments. Yes, the brake like switch is what fixed your Park Interlock so you don't have to mechanically bypass it now. Tow truck drivers know these things because many times, we'll get a vehicle with NO POWER, which means the Park Interlock will NOT work cuz of no power so we have to mechanically bypass the Park Interlock to be able to get it into N to be able to load it. So keep your knowledge on that Park Interlock Bypass. You may need it in the future for some other reason. LIke Lost keys for example, you can at least by pass the interlock and get it into N to be able to roll it forward or backward to move it out of the way from like blocking a vehicle in , or open a garage door. Some of this seems awful expensive. Like $109 for light bulb out? I think you can Google that and change a bulb yourself. She is 100% correct on the trans fluid. And that goes for most Automatic transmissions. So the deal is, you either maintain your transmission, or you don't. That simple. Once it gets to bad, you're best to leave it alone, cuz when you clean all that gunk that was allowed to build up due to lack of maintenance, gets cleaned out, then your tolerances are much bigger now and it causes trans slippage and then it's trashed and needs rebuilt. I agree, get this stuff fixed before the build. Now as far as brake fluid flush, that's way high too. $542??? You can actually probably do that yourself too. If you know how to bleed brakes? The you can flush your own brake fluid. You can even invest in a vacuum pump, and just disconnect the line from the caliper, and vacuum new fluid from the master cylinder all the way back to the calipers at the wheels. Google some of this stuff, and I'll promise you, You'll be suprised at how much of this you can do yourself, and save yourself a fortune. I just hate seeing people get taken advantage of. YES YES YES, I am so glad you tell how much things cost. DO IT. It's educational, and it helps viewers advise you too, like for example, I'm suggesting you can save a bundle by doing the brake flush and replace that bulb yourself. I get it, you have to pay for some things, but some things, you can reasonably do things yourself, and some of us don't want you taken advantage of. If I can make a suggestion and save you a few hundred bucks, then Ember can have a new paid of shoes. Sorry for the long post and I even made it short and didn't make all the suggestions, but so you know, you can save yourself a bundle. If it were me, I'd even be reaplacing those sensors myself. It's not hard. The hard part you paid them for, and that was to diagnose and tell you which ones are bad and need replaced. So now that you know this stuff, choose what you can do yourself, do that stuff first, THEN take it in to do what you choose for them to do, and they're likely to let you know if the things you did, were done correct or not. You got a great plan that makes total 100% sense. Now just try to save yourself some money and make a goal of cutting that bill in half and do some things yourself.

I was thinking the same thing about doing some of the things .
That's what I do. I go to AutoZone and find out the problem then repair or replace myself if possible. Saved hundreds by doing that and I'm a seventies lady, single on fixed income.
Thank you for sharing with Jaylena because she's a smart girl and it will definitely help her grow her knowledge in these issues.
I've found some mechanics just aren't that good or just don't care to research a problem out
Older mechanics are the best if you can get one .

I was going to tell her the same. I don’t know if she’s done it or not yet ? My dad and uncle had gas stations growing up , and one rule was never change the transmission fluid. They would say when you change it, you cut the life of the transmission or vehicle in half. If, it’s starting to go bad it will probably go completely out. I know for regular transmissions it can be $3-5k to rebuild, so I can imagine that van will be even more. So, unless it’s stalling , or jumps when going into gear then I’d just leave it alone. You should be able to know as your driving it, listen as it goes in to 1,2,3 or however many gears that’s in the van. I’m also feel like those are some very high prices. I would look and see what you can do your self and do it. Mechanics see women coming and make up more things just to sell services.
I have an Infiniti and it has dual fans on it - one for ac and engine. It ran hot while it idles- I turned ac on to get home. They ended up charging me $700 for that set/ housing, when it only needed one fan, not the housing. The one fan was like 150.00- so you need to get a few estimates and research stuff yourself. They will rip you off if you don’t get another estimate . I think you made a good choice with the van because when your done it will be a 35- 40k van. They are so high now low $80-150k ( new / few years old ). So, I can’t wait to see the inside of it when your done. Good luck girl 😀

    YES YES and YES!!!
You clearly understand the *value* of getting all maintenance and repair tasks dealt with and done well with *good quality parts*! Is it expensive? Sure, but just see what you might get in a new vehicle for that money -- not much if anything. While some have commented that you're being over-charged ( they may be right in some cases), and there may be things you should attempt yourself (tail light-bulbs, cabin air filter, etc.), the truth is, overall, Mercedes parts aren't cheap, especially as you get into older ones ( the rarer they get, you start coming into "part finding" charges, krikes!)
I'm glad you found a mechanic that does good work, and that you can trust to do things properly and with good quality OEM parts -- why spend a boatload on labour and then use cheap-ass parts just to need to do it all over again in 6 - 12 months.
I get the impression your Sprinter has just been neglected a bit, rather than abused -- as such, getting all the past-due items handled by a conscientious mechanic (who may charge a bit of a premium) is the best plan you could make. A mechanic shop that actually cares about the work they do on your vehicle is a rare find and worth any extra $$$. Just make sure you get it well insured once the build is done -- it's truly an "investment"!
    Cheers!...from North Vancouver

Thanks for the update Jaylena. Looks like you’re really getting things in order and being proactive on problematic issues. Keep in mind, like others have mentioned, that some of these small items you could do yourself. Start with something like the rear brake light. Use RUclips to gain knowledge on doing these smaller items and gain confidence in doing so. I’m going to guess they’re charging you a 1/2 hr for the labor @ $160 per hour plus the cost of the bulb. And as far as the seat removal you may be able to get a sawzall in there with a bi- metal blade and cut the bolts that aren’t coming loose. Just a few suggestions that might help. Good luck on your van journey!

.do not flush the transmission. It will be destruction. If it wasn't serviced regularly. Have them change the transmission filter and top off. 90% of all transmissions is the filter getting plugged. Flushing the system breaks up a lot of little stuff. That will quickly plug up the filter.

I had a Ford car that had that problem with the ‘brake shift release’. I went to drive it one day and it wouldn’t go out of park. I called my mechanic (which was located at the local dealership) and he told me how to do that work around and to schedule to bring it in soonish to fix it. I took it in a couple days later when I had time and they were able to fit me in our their schedule. Definitely an easy fix.

$300 oil change. Buy the filter, oil and do it yourself it's not hard. Fuel filters are usually fairly easy. Brake fluid is usually pretty easy, but hoses do need changing which requires refilling and flush anyway. Cabin filter can usually be found aftermarket like Fram etc and DIY. Normally only a cover opened under hood or above pass foot area. Trans fluid, can be done somewhat easily. Generally on a used one drop the pan change filter and pan gasket, then refill. Later changes can be just drained and refilled. One can even use a vacuum pump to stick tube down into dipstick hole suction out then refill. Getting a trans fluid FLUSH is normally a bad idea. Many say lifetime fluid...which is a lie, 50k is about the most you want to go. Trans fluid is cheap. There's tons of vids how to do it all. It's normally all pretty similar regardless of vehicle.

Sounds like what I went through with our Titan pickup. Airbag light came on. No one would touch it. So off to the dealership it went. The part was 800 bucks, then labor. I stay away from the dealerships, cause of the price markup they do. But when you gotta, you gotta. They did an inspection and came up with 11 things in need. At 5,000 dollars. We have a place here called Anyplace Auto Repair. They come to your home if need be. But the owner was fed up of what shops charge. And he keeps his charges low.

Hi Jaylena. Im wondering if you or maybe even your friend josh, could be paid to do some of those things? Like the bulb, bleeding brakes, etc. I also would let them know you are posting your mechanical diagnosis and costs and explanation of each so that, 1) they are held accountable, 2) know they have to be honest, 3) they could be getting more business for the advertising or be ridiculed. I also want to say, I hope Levi is well and your Mother.

  • @NomadicHooker
    @NomadicHooker 8 месяцев назад +2

Sorry for multiple posts. Another reason you might want to learn how to replace that light bulb, is so you know what needs to be accesible to change it out. If you do your build and you block that off, then in the future, you'd have to destroy your build or at least take it apart to replace a bulb. You don't want that, so it'll be good for you to know what access is needed to change a bulb and make sure you leave that access incorporated in your build out.

Dealer costs for vehicle repair are higher than an independent owner operated garage. That is too expensive. Parts costs will probably be about the same unless aftermarket parts will work. Some aftermarket parts are good while others won't work. Most if not all can be done by an independent garage. typically their hourly rates are lower. In our area usually labor for mechanics at independent garages is just under $100 per hour. Check with others in the area or do a search for a garage in your area. Call to ask if they can do what you need. Ask them what it will cost but don't show them what the other garage charged. Ask others in the area how good they are and if they are too expensive. I would use a cabinet latch for your glove compartment. Probably a good magnetic catch will work well and will cost a lot less than an original replacement catch. I wouldn't expect a transmission oil change and filter to be much over $100 dollars including oil and filter. any garage should be able to do an oil change for less than they charged.

Hi Jalena, I guess I missed the video where you said why you sold your SUV and bought the van. I don’t understand why you sold what was a good family vehicle for a van that has no place for a car seat. I’ve said it before you and Isaac are good parents but I just don’t understand why you sold such a nice family SUV for a van that doesn’t even have a place for Ember. I know you are going to build it out after you get all the mechanical stuff taken care of. And , I’m sure once it’s all built out Ember will have a seat just for her. My concern is what about in the mean time. Y’all were stranded in an ice storm because you had no way to get you and Ember out because Isaac was stranded where he was. Look I’m just concerned for y’all that’s all. No I don’t need to understand, I mean really it’s none of my business. I really hope y’all stay safe and things work out the best for the entire family.❤️

I would say now that you’ve got this list in this printout of what needs to be done get a second opinion. $11,000 is a lot of money. But when you go into the next place if you do decide to get a second opinion don’t tell them, but the first place found, you let them do it all on their own. It’s kind of like going to the doctors office she get to see if you’re really getting scammed. Anyway, Lord have mercy I don’t know they see people coming with the Mercedes. I wish you luck sweetie dang $11,000 I’m still freaking out and it’s not even my vehicle.😳 🤣👌

  • @okeating3663
    @okeating3663 8 месяцев назад

I wonder , could you replace the cabin air filter. In some vans, its behind the glove box. Also could you replace the tailght bulbs yourself, or is it a wire issues.
Fuel filters could be on top of the gas tank, which can be difficult.
As for the glovebox not latching, sounds like the lock mechanism. Possible can be replaced yourself.
Just see if the part is available at a part store or online. Replacing or repairing some of these items yourself, could save you thousands In Cost at the mechanics.
I've had regular dodge vans, not converted like you do. But when a small repair was needed I learned to do them myself.
Check out some RUclips videos which could assist you in some repairs, to help save some money.
Plus with tailghts, if o e fails on the road. Knowing how to do it will save looking for a mechanic , plus time and money to fix them.
    Hope this info helps.

Please dont take this the wrong way.
(I know when u say that... u might as well of not said ot at all)
    Hear me thru tho.
U might want to get a 2nd opinion or 2.
I understand what ur saying as far as.being a "mercedes".... but...
I've been a delivery driver, in my own vehicles, since 1995.
So have seen my fair share of things that go on with vehicles.
And I think u might be getting a raw deal here on this list.
My gut tells me they are way over charging u here.
As u know when we buy used vehicles, we never know what the other owner (s) have done to the vehicles b4 we get them.
My 1st red flag altogether is the screwdriver starting thing.
That might indicate it was stolen.
I personally wouldn't of bought it on that alone.
I also had the same kind of thing on a vehicle I was looking at. And I just kept on going.
#2 we all know even if they are legit and do a bang up job fixing all those things they claim are needed.
There is no guarantee noth I ng will happen.
Case in point, ur big forever bus.
Even after they did a thorough going over... things happened.
We are all kind of beholden to what they tell us is true.
We're not all mechanics so, we do what we feel is rt, by what they say.
I worked in a mechanics shop delivering parts.
They had a woman at the front telling people what they need, just like ur case.
They said it was because when a woman tells another woman what they would do,if they were them.
9 out if 10 will do it.
I dont want to be a negative nelly but just telling u what I've seen from the inside out,and my own car buying experiences.
Ultimately we all have to go with our gut, and our pocketbook, and make decisions that are rt for us.
Lastly I'll just say I have a bad gut feeling about what they are telling u needs to be done.
Auto zone probably could've changed out ur rear bulbs for free just the cost of the bulbs.
At the end of the day, just do what u think is rt.
I was compelled to send this, even tho its long.
Its heartfelt. Good luck whatever u decide. Praying for you all.🙏🙏🙏
With ur vehicles, ur house and ur lives.
We the subs do care what happens to u all.
    Peace❤

Maintenance is expensive on all vehicles , I paid 7000 dollars for a new transmission on my 2005 Chevy avalanche that has 90,000 miles. I also. had the original radiator replaced this summer. I have my vehicle service and running in top condition so if I need to take a trip without any mechanical issues. I love my truck and it has been very dependable because I have it serviced since the day I bought it. Whatever it needs, it gets, better to service than having to replaced a major expensive part. 😊
