  • Thanks to Jesper Nielsen for the audio content in parts - this is the whole interview pieced together in its entirety for your enjoyment.
    The interview was filmed by Sirius XM as video content (there are snippets floating about on RUclips) but I haven't seen the whole 2-hour interview in video format.
    So here's the next best thing. Enjoy!

    I was at the St Louis show at Mississippi Nights that almost turned into a riot. It was WAY more intense than described on this video. Bouncers were kicking kids out left and right for stage diving and Kurt was visibly getting PISSED OFF about it. A bouncer broke his effects pedal in the middle of a song so the band left stage after only playing a few. The place got real ugly real quick. Serious riot vibes in the air. After about 10-15 minutes they came back out and Kurt told the audience to get on stage. Then they started playing again and the bouncers left everybody alone rest of the show. Nirvana took complete control and made the club/ authorities abide by the band's rules. So much charisma. It was unforgettable.

    The recording on Nevermind is one of those landmark moments in music history, like Elvis' first record, or The Beatles recording Sgt.Pepper. Can you imagine being a fly on the wall and hearing Smells like teen spirit being recorded, live, and then going, "yeah, that was the take, heard it 500 times"?

    Great interview. I remember going to the local music store here in Cali with my older brother back in the 90s when this album first came out. We had no money and when we went back to his car he pulled all these tapes out of his jacket that he had stolen. I had no clue lol.... My brother loved rap he had all these rap tapes and one nevermind tape..after listening to all his rap tapes first, he popped in nevermind and we listened to the entire album and loved it...RIP KURT

    1:23:00 what Jon was tryin to press about Guns N Roses was that Duff came up to Krist sayin he was gonna kick his ass, and Krist kept ignoring him, and Duff kept pressing him till Krist, being so tall, leaned down and told him to go with him where he and Duff would fight....away from Duff's boyguards, where Krist said he'd gladly kick his ass. The 2nd story was where Axl showed up with his model girlfriend, and Courtney went off on Axl and calling his gf a whore etc etc...classic Courtney, and Axl got pissed and told Kurt "Kurt, tell your bitch to shut the fuck up." and Kurt turned his head and told Courtney "bitch, shut the fuck up." idk if this all happened at the MTV awards or somewhere else. But Dave and Krist didn't wanna talk about those infamous stories.

    How funny how the dynamic has changed. I watched an interview from 1993 and it was Krist doing a lot of talking and goofing off with Kurt Loder from MTV, with Dave throwing in the odd joke or comment and now during this interview, the roles have completely reversed. Admittedly Krist was drunk during the 1993 interview and nearly spilt his wine over Dave’s knee but still....

    id like to hear butch talk about those amps used, oh well. as for the impact of nevermind i was about 12 when it came out. i was a metal head who grew up to hair bands. i had already gotten into pumpkins and janes addiction but nothing was as potent as nevermind. it was so concise, heavy, poppy, catchy, and sonically powerful and pleasing. girls liked it. nothing touched it. the lyrics could be both abstract and culturally relevant. the look, the lyrics, the sound all came together. paramount, legend.

    • @andytatt100

      I agree....i was big into Metallica and 10 at the time, but nevermind made me put Metallica on the back burner almost untill now haha then the unplugged album i probably listen to once a week, insane how much sound and melody was packed into their music and it wasnt even complicated shit you know?

    Wow this is great. I was a little late to the party, my parents were musicians so I was deeply in love with the Beatles at 8years old, I was 12 when I first saw the smells like teen spirit and in bloom videos. The neighborhood rite aid was sold out of nevermind, so I got Incesticide and happened the grab TOOL’s undertow, realized “shit.... all I need is a guitar, an amp, and a couple friends..” and started a band at 13. Thanks Dave Krist Kurt and Butch.🙏🖤

    • @kevinmurtagh4996
      @kevinmurtagh4996 4 года назад +15

      FooFighters1188 I think it’s a very legitimate question. I can’t fathom spending a career having extremely loud, noisy guitar and cymbal wash BLASTING into your ears, night after night after night for years. There are many, many people who came out of the 80’s punk scene who suffer now from crippling tinnitus. Some of them just have to retire from playing live because they will go deaf if they do it any longer. Some were smart and always wore ear plugs from the beginning, even though it wasn’t as common back then. The best example is Dinosaur Jr- they are arguably the loudest/noisiest band ever, and they were smart enough to all wear heavy duty ear plugs every single gig they ever played. It can be so tempting to not wear ear plugs because they cut out all the high-end to the point where you often can’t hear yourself play.
