I admire your perseverance and ability to keep the end goal in mind. No, it’s not a typical homestead house or a log cabin and certainly not a tiny house, but it’s YOUR dream home in a beautiful rustic setting in the mountains. It would be so easy to say “It’s taking too long. Cut corners and let’s sleep in today.” I enjoy your every video and miss both of you if the time lapse grows long. That only tells me you are working hard and the long hours prevent editing. Keep on keeping on!
I did this 20 years ago in one of my rooms to hide cracks and imperfections , painted it and rag rolled over top. It's still my favorite room in the house. It was a lot of work, couldn't imagine doing the whole house! Good job!
Most drywall finishers do offer texture. Your guys probably just didn't know how to do this. I'm watching this video because I have to do about 22500 sqft of this on my next house. Thanks for the video.
Having lived with both textured walls and smooth walls, I have to say the smooth are much easier to live with when it comes to painting and cleaning. I do like the looks of textured walls but like I said not so easy to live with.
I tried to get my texture guy to do something similar on my walls, but I didn’t know the lingo and couldn’t communicate what I wanted. I ended up paying him to do an almost smooth texture on the whole house. In the living room, I made a texture myself by glazing over the paint and putting painter’s masking plastic on the glaze(very carefully!) and then pulling it off. It turned out looking very cool, but not exactly what I wanted. I’m tired of it after 13 years and my husband doesn’t want me to change it! Someday. You guys are amazing at your willingness to jump in and do what needs done, I love that about you. Looks like you did a good job. Now you can’t say you’ve never done it before, to a lot of things!
Hats off to you both! My husband and I did the Faux Plaster, but we started with textured/painted walls. We sanded, then hand troweled 3 thin layers in cross over pattern(X) then burnished the walls for smooth shiny spots on wall that makes the imperfections pop. Our mud had color added to it, so we did not have to paint. I can’t wait to see the final technique once your finished.
The wall linings and plaster have really started to bring your build into a home, can't wait now to see it all painted with the wood ceilings in and what floor coverings you choose.
Alright new video...love it. I've done this for a friend years ago, I enjoyed and she loved it. Another one off the list for you...see you in the vid. Thank for sharing
LOTS of wall space you had to texture... My hat's off to you for getting it all done! BRAVO! It will be much more visible after priming when it's all the same color.
Totally didn’t realize this RUclips account was the same jen who taught me about chickens!!! I searched for this wall texture process and it really helped!! Thank you again Jen!
That takes a lot of patience in that size of house. I bought a small house with paneling on some of the walls above wainscoting (picture that :) I textured the paneling and it came out really nice. Your house is looking really nice.
My dad used to do it in wet plaster! It was called Stipling, A stiff brush was used to make swirls that were then knocked down after deying some. he would then use a sponge with a contrasting thinned paint color to accent yhe texture.
"But, it's my case of beer." 🤣🤣🤣 I am spewed water out my nose! That was so funny! I'm not a texture gal, but this particular look may very well change my mind. I think that is going to look so good when you get the color on there. I noticed a bare corner of the great room. A spot for a fireplace by any chance?
We did this with paint in our study! 3 different colors of paint. It came out looking like we had used leather on the walls! A real nice room to enjoy a good book while relaxing in the evening.
Wow! It's really coming together great! Been watching your channel long before the build and have enjoyed all your vids. So happy for your family. Can't wait to see what it looks like come the Fall/Winter Holidays. Good on you guys for living your dream. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
Your result will be a very organic one. I like it! Yup, it's my quesadilla, too! It's great to see you guys putting your hands to work on your home ... Always 💕
Everytime I watch either one of y'all...i feel lazy! Lol man I love y'alls motivation!! Personally, the texture in my house...is a nightmare aaaaaah lol best of luck and well wishes ALWAYS🤘edit: I freakin' love watchin' y'all work together. The teamwork, beautiful! Not every couple is a team. Js lol
Great job! Lots of hard work paid off! I'm having my livingroom done like this to match my dining room. The house is a 1932 Craftsman Bungalow and the livingroom has many layers of wall paper that's been painted over many more times. Whoever previously owned the house tried to take the wallpaper off then realized it was on there too well and gave up and painted over it. The walls look like trash, so I figured I'd give it a skim coat, then I figured I'm too busy to do it so I have to hire people so I might as well have them try and match the dining room. It doesn't have to be perfect, it'll add some wonderful character and hide the imperfections on the walls from the transitions of old lath and plaster to the new drywall as well as the scars from where patches of wallpaper has been torn out.
JAMIE.....do not let him forget how very well he handles a vacuum and broom when this is all finished teehee! It just look so beautiful! Have y'all decided on paint color yet?
I am pooped just watching you guys do your thing, lol. This is going to be bloody awesome and I can't wait for the final result. Thanks for another great video!
I have lived with both and particularly when it comes to cleaning smooth walls are much easier. Dust settles in the recessed parts of the texture and is difficult to clean out which could be especially labor intensive on all those high walls. Also any foreign matter like food etc is stubborn to remove from the texture. I do like the look of textured walls though, so if you don't mind the extra work you will enjoy the look of them regardless.
The finished product looks similar to what my drywall guy did on my ceilings. He used a board with a handle, covered with foam and upholstery vinyl . He dipped it in loose mud and daubed it on the ceiling and then came back with the knockdown knife.
We did this kinda of thing 20 years ago. We now wish we never had done it. Stuff sticks to it and it's a bugger to clean, even with multiple coats of paint. But as others have said, it's your home, make it the way you want.
Thanks for sharing your technique and results! It looks amazing! I’m going to use a similar technique to cover some ugly orange peel textured walls in my old house.
I love that you're trying to give your house some character, with a rustic feel. I've always prefered older houses as they have character and charm, but with that usually comes cold, damp and draughty houses. With your house, it's the best of both worlds, rustic character and charm but well insulated and easy to keep warm/cool. The house looks fantastic and you're doing an amazing job. Looking forward to the homestead and canning videos making a return.....when is the kitchen going in? :)
Smooth walls also show all the little imperfections. I learned from my grandparents house, the older the house is and the more it settles, the more of those imperfections like to show up.
Look better? I'm almost certain that texture work is going to look really neat in the end. You're just conventionally minded to a probably excessive degree.
I used to watch you on a regular basis. But I still enjoyed THE DIRT ,which wasn't coming out as much. But now that you are on the interior of you house I am really enjoying! BTW, please do not change the name. To me its whatever you are involved in at the time, LIFE. Lots of good info! This texture stuff is WAY COOL!
If you are using 4" casing, your pencil line for stopping your texture should be more like 3" from the stud. You need to account for the 3/4" finish jamb in the doorway. That would move your casing into the opening by about an inch all around.
When we textured our walls in our entryway hall, we put the mud up, let it firm up a bit them took a stiff brush to give the wall some groves (we went all different directions so it was not uniform, then took a finish trowel and knock down any high spots)
I did this to one of my homes but I also put cornmeal in the paint to give if that grit. Then rolled it on and smeared it with the roller. I did that with kilz primer first, then after it dried I painted like normal. everyone thought it was plaster. I told a guy no.. .that's sheetrock. He thought I was lying and I had to explain my technique to convince him.
Always prime your walls, doesn’t matter if you are going to paint, wall paper or texture, not priming means the wall draws to much water out, uses more paint, the texture may not bond well, wall paper doesn’t stick well when hanging and can be difficult to to remove in the future.
We did a splatter knock-down...round brush with compound, stomped on the wall then using a trowel we smoothed/knocked down the high peaks of the compound...beautiful If done properly.
Your House...Your Walls...Your Tastes. Doing a GREAT Job! But...PLEASE put a temporary safety railing on that balcony. I just have visions of you stepping back to look at your plaster work and going over the edge. Keep up the great work. You should be very proud.
