    If Laine can be more consistent, it would be worth it to sign him for 7x8.5 mill. However, when he was on the Jets I’ve seen him go on many cold streaks with no goals being scored. He has yet to prove to be consistent point producer. He can also make nice passing plays, so that’s another plus. He does need to work on his 200 ft game though. But it has gotten better over the years. His shot is elite.

    As a jackets fan, I'm tired of everyone thinking Torts is the same coach as he was in Vancouver and New York. He is so different here in Columbus and why we have had home here for 6 years. People bitch about him driving out star players but he isn't. Panarin thrived here and wanted a big market. Duchene was a rental who had no say in coming here. Bobrovosky played his best hockey here and we just weren't going to pay 10mil a year. Looking back at Saad and Panarin and what Torts has done with skilled players is impressive. He basically gives them free reign as long as they are accountable bc he understand the talent. I think Laine will play his best hockey here and I hope we sign him for 7 years. Our GM Jarmk knows Laine bc of Finland ties and has been a part of his life for a while. I'm really hoping we can sign him long term and he wants to stay here. Bc the city already loves him here.
    Now as for Dubois. We dont know why he wanted to leave and will probably never know. It's not bc of Torts and Luc said as much in his Winnipeg interview. I think it boiled down to a young Canadian kid panicking about long term contracts being thrown at him. I think he wanted a shorter deal and wanted to see what else was there. Negotiations may have went South we don't know. However, he chose to quit on his teammates while still here and thats beyond embarrassing. Fans here are beyond excited to be past Dubois and welcome Laine to town. And don't forget the hometown hero Roslovic who is playing very well here right now

    As a Jet fan, Laine is so dominant when hes consistent. It was shown last year when we got 20 goals in december alone. However, hes a bit lazy and the trade demand was the icing on the cake. Hes still worth 7-9m but Dubois 100% fits our roster better. Can’t wait to see what hes made of tonight

    Jets fan here,
    from what I can tell Laine wanted out of Winnipeg because he wanted top line minutes, and wanted to be the main star. The problem with that is he did not gel with Schiefele on the ice and was inconsistent 5V5, therefore couldn't be on the top line. At the same time the whole Dubois situation came up as well and the Jets pounced on a big , young centreman in Dubois. There was some talk that Wheeler had driven Laine out of town but Laine had denied those rumours. All in all, I think the jets will miss Laine's character and insane offence, but I think Dubois will fit in fantastic, especially if playing with Kyle Connor. The jackets got a big time scorer and he looks like he fits well, now they just have to build and keep him happy so they don't lose him in a year or 2.

  • @LodestarLogado
    @LodestarLogado 3 года назад +1

    He wanted first line minutes, and a top dollar contract. He played with Schief on the top line all year once Little was injured and Wheels moved down to play centre on the second line. They didn’t gel as well as they needed to to justify paying him. I personally wish things had worked out but I’mma be a Laine fan wherever he goes.

    @michael2428 3 года назад +1

    With the current situation as a jets fan I wouldn't pay him more than 6-7 million. He's been on the second line most his career and is deadly on the powerplay but he didn't seem to be a good 5on5 player or and also importantly didn't seem like a good leader at all. He has one year left on his deal and most likely woulda left without the jets getting anything, so getting pierre luc dubois who's gonna be a great second line 2 way center for at least 2 more seasons seemed to be a good move. Giving up Roslovic and that pick was pretty questionable though, he's an underrated playermaker who has potential to be a good top 6 forward.

    What I gathered from the PLD/Torts debacle is that after the Jackets lost to the Bolts in game 5, Torts went off on PLD and blamed him for a lot of things. PLD’s interview was telling in that he said during the off-season he realized he wasn’t happy in Columbus. That means prior to the playoff loss, he was feeling good but the loss changed it. In this case I’d say Torts may have went too far, but PLD also needs to understand that the NHL is a rough job with guys knocking on the door behind him, waiting to take his job.

    Not a Jackets or Jets fan but I've heard rumors that Laine wants to be in a bigger market. He will be an RFA at the end of this season and Dubois will have one more year at $5 mill before also becoming an RFA. Laine has ruffled some feathers with teammates in the past (could be a language barrier or a big ego) so I wouldn't put it past him to hold out to land in a big city with a big contract. Roslovic is a solid player and a former first-round pick. If Columbus truly felt Laine has a future with the Jackets I don't think Roslovic would've been thrown into the deal because, as you mentioned, both players were picked 2 and 3 in their draft year and have proven themselves.

  • @iCoolaxe

  • @jakebursk8680
    @jakebursk8680 3 года назад

    As a Blue Jackets Fan:
    In the past Torts has given the stars a lot of space and freedom, panarin is a great example. I assume he will try and do the same with Laine. On the other hand PLD is not a star. He was an up and coming two way center, so Torts treated him like one and tried to mold him into his game plan because PLD isn't a "prime atkinson" or a "panarin" or even a "laine". That being said Laine isn't excited about the trade, so it will be tough getting him to stay, but it isn't impossible. The finns are a very tight nit group in the hockey world. Kekalainen will absolutely use their shared heritage (and home town) to keep laine happy and feeling at home. Laine is already scoring with CBJ and if he keeps it up and if CBJ start turning these close games into wins then perhaps another playoff appearance (and maybe a run) with be their reward. If that's what happens then Laine could very well enjoy his spot with The Jackets and Tortorella.
    But keep in mind that Laine would rather have gone elsewhere

  • @michaelduke8521
    @michaelduke8521 3 года назад +1

    As a Jets fan, I’m in the minority but I’m glad Laine is gone. As you said he’s great on the powerplay but poor when it’s even strength. He’s bad defensively, slow, and weak on the puck resulting in a lot of turnovers and breakaways for the other team. He didn’t seem to have much of a locker room presence outside of being really good friends with Nik Ehlers. In fact, he was more of a distraction, not only for his trade request, but also his off-the-ice incidents like his fortnite addiction and regularly staying up till 5 AM the night before gamedays. This is not to say that he won’t improve over the rest of his career, he’s only 22, but he’s had ample time to do so on the Jets and hasn’t. I get the vibe that he doesn’t take his job too seriously. A lot of Jets fans are calling this the worst trade of all-time, but now we have a two-headed monster at Center with Schief and Dubois which will be important for the playoffs. We still have 3 good wingers who we’re paying a lot of money to in Ehlers, Connor, and Wheeler and to resign Laine would’ve been investing way too much money into that position.

  • @holofech9744
    @holofech9744 3 года назад

    As someone living in winnipeg, what I heard was that Laine was pissed (to some degree) that he wasn`t on the first line, even though Scheiffles and Wheeler just have better chemistry. If he continues to work on his two way game like he was starting to last year I could easily justify paying him 9 mil to be THE star winger on a team, Columbus definitely won the trade tho unless Winnipeg manages to pull some psycho stud in the third round from that pick

    • @evictioncarpentry2628
      @evictioncarpentry2628 3 года назад +1

      Laine played first line all last season. Jets staff said the analytical data doesn't work with him there. That's why he went back to the second line.
      Laine can't handle that fact and that's why he left. His game just isn't there yet. Goals aside he's a defensive liability and turnover machine.
      Hence why he was benched tonight by torts. He doesn't put in the effort. He's a one way player.

    I'd probably be willing to give him 7-8 million, like you said, very lethal on the power play and very likely to be a 40 goal scorer no matter where he goes, since PLD is gone from CBJ Laine is essentially the star player of the team, and Ros(however you spell his name) is climbing the ranks there to as one of their more productive forwards. Many things could happen but if Laine does decide to stay I see CBJ building the team around him. I dont watch the CBJ games but I know that their offence cant be to strong minus Laine and a few others. Maybe Domi might be a good match with Laine, good puck moving forward with hands that can free him space and open the lanes, who knows. Im a Montreal fan but I love hockey talk. Laine is a great sniper. I'm not sure if hes a centerman or a winger, like i said i dont watch the games, but if he's a center he shouldnt be, wasted potential putting Laine in the circle when the guy can barely defend (at least from highlights ive seen) a strong 2 way center with Laine on the wing is what CBJ needs. but time will tell

  • @jacksonfolkins9834
    @jacksonfolkins9834 3 года назад

    I'd probably be comfortable paying Laine like 7x35-42 mil somewhere in there. the cap is gonna be increasing once covid is under control, and you'll soon see alot more 9-10 mil deals for top 2 line players I feel.

  • @Jake_Broer
    @Jake_Broer 3 года назад

    Laine had asked for a trade. He wasn't happy with the ice time he was getting and he probably felt he could contribute more with more minutes. I agree with that sentiment, too. He could be great 5v5 if he's given enough time on the ice and space. Superstars shine when given the pieces around them and, in my opinion, Columbus has those pieces. However, I don't see him staying because of how small the market is. He probably would go to a bigger market where they can afford to pay him big money while also having those tools to help him score 50+goals on top of helping the players around him. Maybe a younger, up and coming team needs a goal scorer for the foreseeable future and Laine signs there hoping that the talent there is enough for him to maximize his potential while also helping those younger players grow into stars of their own

  • @williammayer6829
    @williammayer6829 3 года назад

    Laine is an awesome playmaker and sniper, completely invisible outside of the offensive zone. Unlike Ovi he hasn't developed a physical edge to his game. Potentially 50 goal scorer for seasons to come, probably needed the hookers and blow instead of fortnite
    PLC on the Jets sets us up for cups to come, hopefully Wheeler stays healthy like he has and doesn't become a scrub. It's Mark's team and with Connor, Ehlers, Copp and Stastny we're solid

  • @grahamwright6971
    @grahamwright6971 3 года назад

    Laine is a generational shooter, but he so one dimensional it hurts. His boots on the wall are so slow, that defenders are on him so quickly when trying to break out, he has improved on his open ice skating, but there is still lots of work to be done. Dubois is a big body, who can skate down hill, play a physical 200 foot game while being able to score and take care of his own zone, not to mention that he is a stud in the face off circle. Teams win with center depth, look at Washington, Boston Pittsburgh and Chicago. What’s the common denominator? Fantastic center depth. With Schief, Dubois, statsny and Lowry (underrated as hell) I believe the jets now have a top 3 forward core in the NHL

    • @grahamwright6971

  • @adamgray6290

    i live in winnipeg and all the rumours about laine were getting insane. he didn’t care about winning with the jets he cared about getting payed more. he knew how close to the cap the jets are and with kyle connor being a better rounded player who recently broke out into a 40+ goal threat that made a player like laine who is a generational goal scorer more expendable. personally i was a fan of laine and i still am and i believe he was working on more then just his shot this off-season. in the one game he played for the jets this season, he had 2 beautiful goals and a great assist aswell and also was using his 6’5 body to his advantage which he has never done before. i think he was really on the point of something great with the jets but he wanted to get payed and with the inconsistency in his game he became a love him or hate him player in winnipeg. i think that he should’ve signed a smaller contract for 1-3 years again with the jets to give us time to fix our cap situation but he deserved to get payed and it’s a shame that winnipeg couldn’t do it because we are all missing him in winnipeg now that he’s gone but we all are wishing the best to him in columbus now. also i wouldn’t give him more then 7 mil for 7 years.

  • @ProductNorth

    The problem with Laine is inconsistency. He can score but he has been very streaky. He has improved mightily on his 200 ft game last year and I don't believe people who think he's all shot no defense. Laine wanted those top line minutes even though he was still producing on the second line. It also doesn't help that Wheeler and Scheifele didn't want to break up on the top line. My hope is that Dubois can really find his game with Ehlers or Connor or whoever he's with. Laine gets his wishes of being that number 1 guy it's just how long will he stay and will CBJ pay him the 8.5+ mil he wants. In the long term this looks really nice for the Jets down the middle. To me Laine is worth around 7.5-8 mil right now but if he scores 50 and keeps his defense up he'd be worth the 9-10 mil easily.

  • @nicb1359

    If I were cbj GM I would pay almost whatever he wants for longterm contract. There are only few box office players that sparks interest and lifts up the popularity of the team (like crosby, ovechkin, mcdavid...) and i think Laine could be a decent "mascot" for cbj since they really didnt have any interesting players prior Laine. So as GM of CBJ I would offer him +10m/season 6-8 year deal, but if you look laine just as a hockey player and dont consider the media and fansales, I think 8-10mil./season would be fair price for player that should score +30goal per season.

    Torts benched him because his play wasn’t there. He wasn’t the only player benched, Dean Kukan didn’t play the whole third as well. I think the Jackets will have to show Laine what Columbus is all about, but since we are a defensive minded team, I don’t see him staying unless he gets the money he wants which will probably be 7x9.5. Jets fan here from Winnipeg. Laine is gonna ask for 8+/year, if not more. I’m not sure how much Laine has in his bag of tricks beyond the clap bombs from the circle. And Columbus has to try and resign Laine this off season. I don’t know CBJ’s internal cap structure but Laine may rewrite it. Laine asking for first line minutes like some entitled millennial though he didn’t always show the effort to earn that time. PLD has one more year after this. Where these players end up on their new deals will determine who wins this trade.

    As an Avs fan, I know a how Sakic creates god contracts. Based on that, Laine was almost at 1ppg last season. So far this season he is over 1ppg. Just based on his points, Laine should have a max contract of what Mikko Rantanen has. Rantanen is a better two-way player as well as a 1ppg player the last 3 seasons and his contract is 9.25m untill the 24/25 season. Laine should, as a worse 5v5 player and a way worse two-way player, get a 7y deal worth something 7,5-8,5mil. You cant afford a top 6 forward to be bad in the 5v5 game. I can see Laine craving a contract as high or even higher than what Rantanen has, but those are the players, imo, that you should compare in contract talks.

    As an impartial canucks fan, I think Winnipeg wins the trade. Get the Top 6 Centermen they have wanted for years. As for CBJ i just don't see how Laine and Torts are gonna get along

    I feel like I would be willing to pay Laine 9.5 at least for 7 years. We do have alot of good winger depth but guys like my fav player Cam Atkinson are getting older. But if for some reason Laine moves on from us in a few years Oliver Bjorkstrand is a very underrated winger that can be good on the 1st or 2nd line. Other than Laine I think the addition of Roslovic is great. Not just his feel good story of being back in Ohio but he could be a legitimate top 6 forward. As for Dubois in Winnipeg i think he will do well but I wonder how much he will be utilized if Scheifele always stays the top line center.

    As a jets fan i didn’t like it but the reasons for trading him were he wanted to much especially for what he put up last season, Laine doesn’t really wanna be in Winnipeg and he wants to be playing in a bigger market. He also wasn’t getting as much time as he wanted. Laine will not stay in Columbus for very long and wouldn’t have stayed in Winnipeg where as PLB wants to be in Winnipeg because his dad is a coach or some sort of staff member for the moose, he spent all off season in Winnipeg so he wants to be here, in total Laine may be the better player but wouldn’t have stayed so instead of losing him in free agency we got a top tier player thats gonna stay

    if hes willing to commit long-term, 7 x 9mill. The problem in Winnipeg wasnt the money, it was the coaching. Maurice Would not for the life of him play Laine and Scheifele on the same line ever. All Laine wanted was to play with Scheifele, because after him, the center depth in that team drops like an anvil. Stastny was too little too late. Laine in Columbus would bring much needed offense. Sure his defense is a little questionable, but just pair him up with a top Center and you've got your Rocket winner for years to come.

    dubois and laine both didn’t want to be at each of their teams and the jets needed better center depth. they have a bunch of great offensive wingers. Jets definitely won this trade as of right now. Dubois is better than laine right now and the only way the jackets win this is if laine improves his game 5 on 5 and if he signs to the jackets. I personally don’t see his 5 on 5 game improving drastically and i also don’t see him signing with the jackets.

    Winnipeg lost the trade simply because tvey didnt get more for Laine, Dubois is good, real good but considering how bad he look during his ”shift” where he were bearly trying they should have been avle to get another pick just for getting CBJ another just as good player

  • @Finishhockey

    I dont think Laine wanted to stay in winnipeg and the core didnt want him there either. The core in winnipeg with Scheifele and wheeler have been criticised on a lot of occasions that they cant handle players who arent exactly like them. Laine also didnt feel Maurice used him to his full potential leaving him to play with little and statsny whilst a lot less talented scorer in wheeler enjoyed playing with Scheifele. For Columbus they had to get PLD out. He was showing that he wanted nothing todo there and his value was dropping quick. Laine's however is on the rise and using him as a vital on the PP can bolster his value even more and as on RFA they can still trade his rights for a lot. Montreal for example was rumored to be willing to offer him around 8.5 mil. And columbus could probably see to trading him forward. If not they could still keep him as he is a prolific scorer and is guaranteed to get some intrest in the team. All in all good trade for both parties involved. I would want Laine for under 8 mil but if he has a good year I think his number will be 8.5 which depending on your team either makes sence or it doesnt.

    Laine and torts will be fine, Panarin and torts had a great relationship it was the market panarin didn’t like. Torts will be able to make patty a better all around player and get him all the offensive looks on a team struggling with offense. So far I think roslovic is looking like a stud he has 2-5-7 in 7 games played with Columbus after going scoreless in his first 2 games. Ros already looks better than Dubois did in his games this season by a mile

    As a CBJ fan I would disagree with torts “alienating” stars. Look at panarin. Thrived in torts system. All he asks is that you give 100% every shift offensive and defensive. He doesn’t give a fuck wether you’re Sidney Crosby or Jody Shelley of you don’t give 100% you will be benched. Players know exactly where he stands on this

    As a Jets fan, Laine is not a team oriented player. He's the kinda guy that wants to get paid his money and have the team built around him. He didn't fit in great with team oriented guys like Wheeler and Scheifele, so honestly I think its best he got traded, but we shoulda got more back for the guy. And like you said in your video, the jets have enough goal scoring power as it is. We don't really need him. So why not add some skilled depth down the middle in Dubois? Haha tried to be as unbiased as I could be.
