It would be cool if Roger Deakins taught a course in cinematography on the MasterClass site. Maybe it would just be his philosophies on shooting as he expressed in this video. But, I think he would have a lot to say that would benefit most cinematographers, new and old.

Here is the transcript of this video for your enjoyment - complete with many more extra tips!
    Tony
6 cinematography tips from Roger Deakins:
    1) Give each film a unique style:
As a cinematographer, part of your job is capturing the director's vision for the project, but the other part is figuring out the style.
Deakins quotes DP Freddie Francis when he says that there's "good cinematography and bad cinematography and then there's the cinematography that's right for the movie."
    2) Use references for inspiration: The world is full of things to draw inspiration from.
Look at films and paintings, talk to different kinds of people, read all sorts of books, magazines, and articles, and really study everything around you.
    3) Roll with the punches: Things never go as planned when shooting a movie, so rolling with the punches and adapting to change is one of a cinematographer's greatest assets.
    4) Keep an open mind: Embrace "happy accidents" and allow yourself to learn from new things, which may result in more nuanced moments on screen.
    5) Operate the camera: If you're the one operating the camera, it gives you the ability to react to what's going on during the shot.
    6) Embrace intimacy: Even though the tool you use to do your work is humongous and intrusive, what it has the potential to capture is something incredibly intimate.
So, find ways to "get closer" to your subjects, whether that's by using certain lenses or moving your camera closer.
    Extras tips:
    a) People confuse pretty and good cinematography.
    b) Try to extract a new visual style from every script.
    c) If the viewers don't mention your work then it's probably better than if they do. It means that it actually works, because the film is a piece.
    d) Existing films influence you even if it's not conscious when you are doing something. You know, the kind of mood they have and the emmotional connection I have to them.
    e) Danger of being too rigid in terms of shooting what you prep and also a danger of being too fluid and not doing enough prep.
    f) I love happy accidents - you are in a set and suddenly the light starts slashing through a window, and even if you don't use that natural light, you suddenly think:
Ah, that's it I didnt think of that, so you maybe cut that light off and put a lamp to do exactly the same thing so you can have consistency.
    g) There is so about the movement of the camera and the composition. You want to be open to things that happen on a set.
You can't be if you've got to communicate with an operator (which you can't do when they're shooting a shot, so if in the middle of the shot somethings happening you want to just think:
Oh if I just take the frame over that way a bit that will do blah blah!
    h) It's a totally different effect to an audience looking at somebody on the end of a 100mm lens as opposed to a something that is being shot on a 27mm close to or a 21mm.
It's the same as your relationship in real life to somebody. I don't think we take that into account as much as we should really.
His lens choices place the viewer in the scene with the characters.
    i) Cinematography means where you're putting the audience, which in some way is more important than what the frame looks like.

I'm surprised this video doesn't have more comments. That was s great video and there's a lot to learn from Deakins. What's great about him is that he isn't a "film only" cinematographer. had a flock of passing Seagulls screech just at the right moment, during a pause in a thoughtful monologue, which continued with the words; "In the morning....." just after the pause. During the shoot, it annoyed me and I was thinking about how easy it would be to dub, as it was during a pause. However in edit, the timing and the fadeout of the seagulls was absolutely perfect, and everybody watching this will think this is very obvious FX. I love it when chance beats reality!

What resonates with me is that the idea of personal style is BS. When you are a true creative professional, it's the project you are working on that counts, not expressing "your" style, whatever that means. In this age of vanity, never forget that "it is not about you". Moviemaking is about telling a story to an audience. No one cares about your style.

    • @jas_bataille
      @jas_bataille 5 лет назад +6

First, Deakins is a philosophical guy, not
technical much. I think that you have to change your perspective if you think that this video is not useful compared to an analysis of his work.
Regard Woldcrow’s analysis... with all due respect to the guy... he got a lot wrong.
For instance, he mentions fill light and get into all sort of technical considerations when... look, Roger Deakins NEVER use fill-light.
He literally never used it in his lifetime, that’s one of the few element he keeps from film to film.
And I remember very well Wolfcrow pointed a frame with absolutely no fill-light and started talking about fill
light - that made me cringe.
Ambient light, Rembrant light or reflections are NOT fill lights.
Wolfcrow have a tendency to over-analyze stuff. There’s a lot of *glow* in 2049 but ZE-RO fill lightc guaranteed.
If you look at the eyes of the actors, frame by frame, and find a catchlight at the bottom corner indicating a fill light was used, tell me. I will be surprised. Intermittent light like flash, rembrant light sourced from below doesn’t count. Good luck!

A great cinematographer but unfortunately the person who edited this video spent more time on the production aesthetic (which is questionable to say the least) than they did on Roger Deakins himself and what he had to say. Far too distracting.

Next up: how a genuinely fascinating video can become genuinely annoying through reliance on generic in-your-face techno music.

"If the viewers don't mention your work, it's probably better than if they do."
In that case Deakins is the worst cinematographer of all time.
    (Spoiler: he's not.)

To be honest, only ppl who pay particular attention to cinematography know about him, the average audience even with good taste probably don't. That's what he means though, ppl knowing about your work or not doesn't matter, what matters is whether or not it fits the film, that sense of selflessness is why he's the best.

This is true, 'twas therefor but a jest. The man is all about light and colour and narrative-motivated camera movement and placement. As opposed to using every trick in the book and wowing the masses with unmotivated long takes, purposeless framing etc.

Or you can just create your own style and stop copying others. Just saying there's nothing wrong by being inspired but once you just copy others style is just well unoriginal
