Japanese movies tend to have very "stable" cameras, with near perfect framing, and the camera is also pretty much stationary. This is my favourite type of cinematography
Kobayashi's cinematography is actually fairly unique even for Japanese cinema, it's more intimate and honestly so ahead of the curve. Like Kubrick he was apparently a perfectionist, so it makes sense.
A gem of japanese cinema. One of the greatest samurai film ever made. A film that transcends language and culture fueled by emotionally powerful performances, great cinematography and gripping story. This is pure cinema at its best.
@@abstractsansar6521 Not really, the film focuses a lot more on the human relationship and on the "Bushido" itself, not speaking against it but rather against those who bend the meaning of it and their ethical code in order to achieve self-righteousness. You can see how Kobayashi-sensei portrays what a real samurai and what a real man should be with both Chijiiwa Motome - the willingness to give everything up and fall to the lowest pits of hell in order to try to save the one you love and your family, and Tsugumo Hanshiro - what a man with discipline, determination, grief and sheer ******* will is able to do in order to clear the name of his family. Truly what a real samurai is and how even they are human at heart and how they can also grieve when the world around them is more than cruel towards the ones they love. A timeless masterpiece that its full beauty I simply cannot put into words and will always be in my heart.
Harakiri won the Special jury prize at cannes in 1963. Kobayashi's mentor, Kinoshita, pronounced the film a masterpiece, among the five greatest japanese films of all time.
I love Seven Samurai, Yojimbo and Sword Of Doom, hell basically all of samurai cinema. But something about Harakiri just stands out to me, and that is Tatsuya Nakadai performance. He is just mesmerizing at best in this movie. The Beauty Of Ran 1985
I was expecting to miss the point of the movie, but how magnificently this movie transcends cultural barriers with common human themes and outstanding acting made it thrilling and enjoyable from the start to the very end. I just finished watching it and highly recommend other people to give it a try if you haven't already.
Kobayashi and Miyajima clearly had a great appreciation for Tatsuya Nakadai's craftsmanship as an actor. The stillness of Nakadai's body as he tells his character's story contrasts with the explosive passion and grace of his swordplay. They also knew that Nakadai had deeply expressive, glowing eyes that could capture a full range of emotions. The film is great just by watching Nakadai's performance using only his eyes. Harakiri is a magnificent, gripping film and Nakadai's personal favorite of his distinguished, prolific career.
One of the best movies ever, period. I wish more people watch this movie. It's so incredible. The storytelling is absolutely amazing and don't even get me started on the camerawork. Kurosawa is my favorite director of all time but Hara-kiri is the best samurai movie EVER
This is a damn good edit, I like how the cuts are on beat with the strumming when it gets loud/fast. Harakiri is easily one of my favorite movies, right up there with Throne of Blood.
It’s amazing to see how refined the technology to film black and white actually was in the 60s, look at how hi-def the picture is. You watch a movie from around the same time filmed in color and it’s remastered today, the picture quality still look a bit distorted. Amazing to see what film makers did in the past!
@@coolnamebro I think I'd put Seven Samurai, Rashomon and High And Low above this, but it's really one of those things where it feels weird having to choose between them.
Yesss!!!! Last night I was watching this film. I still consider harakiri as one of my favourite movies of all time. I believe it’s as good as seven samurai.
Shout out to the guy at Barnes & Noble who recommended this as I was picking up some Kurosawa’s for the Criterion sale. This film blew me away. Can’t wait to check out more from Kobayashi
The key piece of anti-feudalism Japans, and from that Marxist vision of Kobayashi, the film delights like no other in the history of cinema, The best film ever in Asia, no doubt
I believe the socio-political critique of the era is only one dimension of the movie. I believe this is just as much a spiritual film as a sociological one. It is about the glory of fighting for the good even if it means death, of risking once life out of a sacral compulsion to embody justice. Of showing the hypocrisy and thus socially killing oneself(of commiting harakiri without commiting harakiri, paradoxically).
I'm a criterion guy, I've heard of this one never seen anything on it or knew what it was about but the first minute of this is absolutely breathtaking, a must own for the next B&N sale!
If I'm not mistaken (correct me if I'm wrong) Harakiri, as well as several Kurosawa films, were a great reference for the creation of Star Wars and Leone's works. It is one of his masterpieces, along with the Human Condition Trilogy, Samurai Rebellion and Kwaidan.
Greatest movie ever made(Oh k, as our great friend insisted, what I mean by saying “greatest” is nothing but I love it very much. I hope at least others are sensible enough to know what I mean and that I am not taking a position of Lord who decides what is the greatest). Waiting for Human Condition Trilogy
Aritosthenes Lol dude! I know “Greatest-something-ever” makes no plausible sense. So that’s why you need to know that whenever someone says a thing like that, they don’t literally mean it. I actually think judging Art itself is very silly. This is just for fun. Ok? Don’t you worry, boy
Aritosthenes and boy I LOVE how you mentioned You Were Never Really Here, which is a more important film for me personally than Hara Kiri. So now you know how serious I was while writing the original comment 😂
It seems most modern films don’t focus on cinematography anymore, and when there’s a beautifully stunning film it’s made a big deal out of. And that’s okay, good films deserve all the praise they can get. But a lot of films seem to overlook the importance of good cinematography. There are of course many great exceptions to this, though.
If you like the collaboration of Tatsuya Nakadai and Masaki Kobayashi, you must see their anti-war masterpiece, the ten-hour trilogy The Human Condition. It will change you.
I genuinely believe that without this movie, Sergio Leone would've never grown out of mediocre peplum into the monster ofna director we remember him as. Harakiri inspired Leone? I think Harakiri made Leone!
Please, if you read this, consider making a video about Yoshio Miyajima as a cinematographer in general. His incredible work with director Masaki Kobayashi does not get recognised enough.
My favorite Samurai movie to be honest. By the way, if you want another great Samurai movie by Kobayashi, watch Samurai Rebellion with Toshiro Mifune. Very underrated flick.
I think the human consciousness is evolving. There's a reason we can't find intelligent life in the universe anywhere else but here. They knew (and we're starting to learn) that existence is a horrific thing to bear. In the next few hundred years we'll join them and find peace in the void. Finally, that will be our earnt reward. Ignorance is bliss.
Man, why can't you stream these Japanese classics anywhere in Germany?? You can't even buy a DVD of this with German subtitles on Amazon...
