In regards to story 11. I remember watching a renovation show when I was young, don't recall the name. Basically they came in and renovated this ladies kitchen without her being able to see any of the renovations to surprise her. She HATED it. Hated the ugly green they decided to paint it and she was distraught by the fact that they'd ransacked her storage room, took some candle holders they'd found, and painted them the same green. They were special candle holders that she had saved from her wedding.

There was renovation show from England and the production team took the OAP owners antique porcelain tea pot collection (worth £6,000 20 years ago) out of storage and put them on a flimsy hanging shelving unit. The shelves collapsed destroying the entire collection. Poor woman was devastate.
To make matters worse the BBC tried to blame the owner to get out of the insurance payout. Apparently that they helped her put the pots into storage meant she'd given permission to take them out. Thankfully a Judge disagreed.

i remember one episode of extreme home makeover. Dude in Idaho ended up with custody of his niece and nephew- can't remember why- but he had full 100% custody of them. He needed more space. Show came in and gave him a MASSIVE house. Way to big. He told the news he tried for almost a year to keep up with the increase in property taxes and insurance but in the end, couldn't. He sold the place, had enough $$$ from the sale and bought a house he and the two kids LOVED he *could* afford on his Salery, paid the house off with the money from the tv show house, had enough $$ to leave each kid a modest trust fund for when they hit 30, bought himself a newish sports car (something he always wanted) and had a few grand left over to dump into his Retirment account.

Yea, Trading Spaces was the name of the show and frankly it was a bit of a disaster, and the Hay glued to the walls room was done by the designer Hildi Santo Tomás. Upon googling that episode, apparently that design resulted in a lawsuit, so there's that. My old dive bar band used to play in a crusty dive bar that ended up on "Bar Rescue." They turned into an upscale sports bar. Problem was, the bar was in a blue-collar neighborhood with an older demographic, and they alienated their modest clientele. The regulars couldn't afford it anymore, and felt uncomfortable in the "swanky" surroundings. Hip young people didn't come after the "rescue," because of the bar's location. The place went bust in a year, and yes, none of the actual problems (roof, foundation, HVAC, appliances) were fixed in the show. It was a really weird vibe post-remodel, I wouldn't have wanted to hang out there either.
    TL;DR: Consider your clientele.

    • @liwiathan
      @liwiathan 28 дней назад +5

This is why gentrification is become a dirty word is it supposed to fix the problems is supposed to replace the crumbling building with new buildings and fix the roofs and give you a real grocery store instead of the rundown gouge Mart you're not supposed to turn your laundromat into some fancy bar that no one can afford it wants to go to they're not supposed to take the local pub and turn it into some trendy Starbucks ripoff off

Shit like this is why you hear that saying “[black people] bitch when [White people] move out of their neighborhood and bitch when [white people] move in”.
      What’s going on here is:
      1. The white people moving out tend to take the established economy in a neighborhood with them. As we know it goes, white people tend to run the businesses wherever they are. They move, businesses close, crime increases, more white people leave, more businesses close, crime increases again, all the white people leave, black people run their own businesses - built to cater to a low-income clientele.
      2. White people take advantage of the newly cheap real estate, move into these run down homes and apartments they’ll certainly renovate, they’ll build their own businesses in the neighborhood, increase property values, increase the cost of living, the businesses catering to the low-income residents have to close because they can’t compete with “fancy pants rich McGee over here” raising their taxes. White business takes over, black people cant afford the rent no more, and the cycle starts over.
In any other country you can pretty much just swap the races out for classes. Or even in primarily white rural areas, this same thing goes on between the rich and poor. I’m using races here simply because that’s how the saying tends to go. Because this country really has a “classism” problem more than it has a “racism” problem. It’s just the classes tend to follow racial lines in this country thanks to past racism.

Honestly for restaurants or hotels, i don't care if it is ugly as sin. what I care about is CLEANLINESS. That means no bedbugs, fresh linens, cleaned toilets, sinks, etc. For restaurants that obviously also extends to the entire kitchen and pantry, using fresh and safely kept ingredients. I don't care if the decor reminds me of a horror flick, just be CLEAN. That is all I ask.

As someone who loves older interior design (50s-80s era) I cannot watch these shows. They make me too angry. There will be some perfectly preserved building with original appliances, wallpaper, built-ins etc, and be like "oh this is so dated, time for a makeover" and paint every dam thing white, remove anything with character and have the audacity to say its better that it was. Just such a downgrade every time...

White is a terrible color for a house, its even worse with new white paint on old houses, it just highlights all the faults and issues, is impossible to keep clean, and even more impossible to match if you need to paint a spot 3 years in.

I live not far from Los Angeles, so I was lucky enough to watch two of these shows film from the street.
    1) Extreme Makeover: Home Edition: The woman who won the house makeover had donated bone marrow to a child with cancer and saved their life, so the child’s mother recommended this woman to the show’s producers. This was the first house on the show that was completely rebuilt and they used a pefab house shipped from Canada. The kitchen was designed 50s diner style. I was part of the crowd in the street watching the yard and front porch getting redone. One of the show’s designers tried to install a swinging chair on the porch, sat in it to test it out, and flipped over backwards. Anyway, a few months later the house was completely abandoned. It was in a not-so-great neighborhood, stuck out like a sore thumb, and I’m sure the property taxes became too much to deal with. This episode was aired only once, and never made it on that season’s DVD when it was released.
    2) Trading Spaces: A colleague called and said the show was filming across the street from her house, so naturally a group of us went over and sat in lawn chairs in her driveway watching the crew and such going back and forth between two of the neighbors’ homes. We caught a few glimpses of the host Paige Davis, and this was before she left the show (or was fired, can’t remember exactly). We found out later that one of the neighbors absolutely hated the way the other neighbors decorated their master bedroom, and when the episode aired, you could tell by the looks on their faces that they weren’t thrilled with the results.

The American version, trading places, had a similar episode. This couple had their family room renovated and had made two requests. 1) No brown. The couple absolutely hated the color brown and didn't want to see it in the room. 2) don't touch the fireplace. They had a brick fireplace which I guess looked fine for the late 90's but they wanted it to remain as is.
Well the designer came up with the brilliant idea to use brown as the base color for the room, and paint over the brick fireplace (the neighbors managed to convince the designer to cover the fireplace instead.) Unsurprisingly the homeowners HATED the room and the wife actually had to excuse herself to go cry off camera.

Two episodes of Extremem Makeover Home Editioin that I will never foget are the ones whee they filled every wall of a boy's bedoom with aquariums of lizards and snakes and frogs, etc. There had to have been at least 20-30 aquariums lining the walls. How that kid eve took proper care of all those creatures and still had time for anything else is beyond me. The other episode was when they put something sticky on the walls of a bedroom and then blew staw at them. Straw coated walls. I can't imagine the bugs and dust, and what one earth happened as the straw broke down and decomposed???

After a tornado hit the town two towns over from us, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, came in and build a house for a military family that lost theirs. Well, not only was the blonde lady, Paige, on the show a complete bitch the whole time she was there to literally everybody, but they ended up having to sell the house because the damn thing was too damn expensive to pay the property taxes and mortgage amongst other things, on and the family couldn't afford to live in this big beautiful, brand-new home that was built for them. They just couldn't keep up with payments and eventually just had to move to a neighboring city. I don't know who owns or if anybody even does. It just wasn't capable for a middle class military family in a middle class neighborhood to pay for such a home. Nice thought to give a home to some people that just lost everything they owned in a tornado, and make their lives a little better, but the reality of the financial cost and situation wasn't taken into account. Clearly.

One of the sons was arrested for having a terabyte of CP on his computer, he was working at an after school program at the elementary school right around the corner from his house there was a huge investigation to make sure none of the kids were victims. But yeah Brian Oatman-Gaitan. He’ll probably show up in the comments to defend his actions as if it were an accident.

Also, I remember my family applying to be on extreme makeover home edition one year, and my mom and dad basically forced me to help them record the VHS we were supposed to send in, and I just didn't want to at the moment. I asked if we could do it later because I was playing with our dogs, was yelled at and I remember my parents threatened to get rid of the dogs if I didn't do it, I started crying because I didn't understand why they yelled at me and threatened the dogs (I was like 4 at the time and I'm autistic), and I basically had to sit there crying while looking at the camera and pretend it was because of the house rather than because my parents were abusive jerks, then try to explain what kind of room I wanted (my parents basically decided for me and I had to just repeat what they said, but I got to decide the theme and chose space). We did not get to be on the show, and I am very glad for that.

Re story 10: I was never on one of those shows but my shower wall panels started falling down (glue up surround) and when I took the panels down I found water damaged plywood. Behind that was termite damaged tongue & groove boards and behind that there were termite damaged studs that were not evenly spaced, didn't go all the way up, were stacked together all hodgepodge etc and it was a nightmare.
I used to hang out on forums for a TLC show called While You Were Out. Numerous homeowners reported that the carpenter Andrew would bring over his dirty clothes and do his laundry without asking permission. There was one episode where they cut a hole in someone's deck and added a sand pit that became a litterbox for local cats. The husband was so furious that the hostess lied about her name (gave her name as the host of Trading Spaces), the crew ran off and forgot to take Andrew, and the angry husband threw Andrew's wet laundry out on the curb. The staff were so worried they called in a wellness check on the wife afterward. The husband had to pay $$$ to repair/replace the deck and remove the sand pit. Apparently, as popular as Andrew was, he sometimes didn't get along with female designers and homeowners. A couple of homeowners reported that he decided to go skateboard or do something for fun instead of working and building things, he didn't follow instructions from some of the designers and messed up, he would take food out of people's fridges without asking-- even though there was catering, he would use people's computers without asking, and he really pissed some of the homeowners off. There was a pregnant homeowner in an episode where the designer was Mark Montano and the carpenter was Jason Cameron. The host, Evan Farmer, was trying to make sure she wasn't around paint fumes and such and they built some stuff for her future baby, but she reported hat after the show she miscarried (unrelated to doing the show). Another really sad one was when John Bruce did a really cool garage (toward the end of the show) for a biker. The wife reported that not long after the show, her husband died in a car accident.

I was working for a rental company that supplied one of those home rebuilds, I think it was the one with the bus. They trashed a lot of equipment, including having grilled under some party tents that then I was able to get cheap for garage space. Apparently the house was nowhere near complete, and they faked some stuff for the cameras. The trim hadn't been stained, and someone would wipe it down with a damp sponge as the film crew came through, so it looked ok in those few seconds.

I'm surprised these shows weren't mentioned: the personality clash on Gordon Ramsey's restaurant renno show (Amy & hubby); the the fact that Trading Spaces used some terrible designers! The episode with plastic flowers on the bathroom walls has been mentioned on other videos (apparently mildew isn't a problem?), but I've never seen the military house redocorated with parachutes & gray cammo discussed; nor the one where the homeowner adamantly hated brown, so the designer created a lovely geometric designed living room that could work just as well with any other 2 complimentary colors in *pumpkin orange* & a *shade* of brown; then tried to defend her color choices because it wasn't "brown." That was the only episode I saw where the wife ran off camera sobbing, & Paige, the host, followed presumably to comfort her.
Does anyone have any juicy trivia about these episodes?

Yeah, never trust “reality” tv. A couple of twins from a very niche San Diego band (Steam Powered Giraffe) that I follow were on a show called Oddities San Francisco. Supposed they had $1000 they wanted to spend on a prop for their singing robot stage show. We as fans knew the second they said that, that it was pure theater. Those two were dedicated DIYers just for the bottom line because that band was their primary source of income and while they might contract out to trusted artisan friends, they sure as crap didn’t have $1000 to piss away on the hideous sculpture the host “found” for them… considering a sculpture had absolutely no function in their stage show. I guess the show runners just found them suitably strange and unusual. They are. But they’re also delightful.

Bar Rescue came to my town. They were suppose to do one bar but one of the owners refused at the last second so the production had to scramble and find another bar. The one they renovated didn't keep the name, food or drink for very long. Needless to say, they didn't last long and went out of business. Bar Rescue then renovated our local VFW hall and gave them a new menu and smoker. They kept the smoker but went back to what I call rabbit tacos since it has 90% lettuce. It made me wonder just how many of these places revert to form.

The amount of times I looked up a restaurant and literally went to their old menu/ cheaper out on their ingredients/ increased the prices even more and then went bankrupt is staggering. It’s gotten to the point at least a couple times in a season the lady makes the owners visit past renovated restaurants that went well and the owners reiterate don’t change anything because people just don’t listen 😅

I'm not surprised the workmanship wasn't all that great because a lot of it was done by the DIY-er contestants. They had pros do the tricky stuff (plumbing, electrical, etc.), and pros also finished up projects that the contestants weren't able to finish. Each team of 2 was assigned a house, and each episode they worked on a different room or project. At the end of the episode, the worst team got eliminated, but the big surprise was that they still won a house.

For extreme makeover home edition, yes the money goes to the homeowner. Someone in bountiful, utah had to do that. Mind the story behind the story for is funnier. During the filming of the show someone stole the bus. Funniest thing ever.

My Dad’s company was approached by the people that liked to “move that bus!” but he refused when he saw the shooting/work schedule -“You can’t do proper, quality work in a week. Period. I don’t care HOW many people you have on crew.”
They tried to make him sign an NDA- he refused b/c he never signed up. He’ll tell anyone to NEVER do one of these shows.

My sister owns and operates a very lucrative hotel renovation business. Our other siblings and I have all worked for her at one point or another in the past 35 years. Renovating entire floors of major hotels is extremely time consuming, exacting, labor intensive process. If the hotel is connected to a chain, such as Marriot or Holiday in for example, there are very strict rules and particular requirements that absolutely must be followed in order to keep the franchise consistent across the board. It’s Avery complicated and intricate process, with every step being inspected and approved by many different people.

Yes just yes I spent most of my school years calling out teachers, school staff, deans, and principals, on their bullshit and kept receipts. I was a good student, but I wouldn't hesitate to let them know they are acting inappropriately, refusing to teach, ignoring bullies or bullying other students. Let them know that they didn't have the right to abuse their power as adults and authority figures to bully children. My smartarse had them right pissed off because I would speak on their level, stay calm and let them know I will report them if they don't correct themselves. Funny thing is no matter how many times I was sent to the office, detention, and suspended I was still one of the top students in their classes and if they tried to fuck with my grades my parents and I would put them in place because I always had evidence, and witnesses. Some of my teachers who liked me would stand up for me despite being annoyed with my behavior but cracked up when the other teachers would sulk about me exposing their bullshit 😂.

I'm pretty sure that you're allowed to sell your house as long as it's after the episode had been filmed and sometimes I'd imagine that the contract says you have to wait until the episode airs before selling. However, a lot of people use these types of shows BECAUSE they are already selling or remodeling and the show just boosts the number of eyes on the house or whatever.

Makeover wish, season 1, episode 12, The donor - that episode from story 14 is on YT. And little Oliver, if I caught the name of the child correctly, was a bit estranged with the new surroundings. But I don't blame him. A lot for a small child to take in and the filming won't have helped. They even showed a newspaper article about the donation.
Was it to my taste? Well it was not my home, so why should it be? I loved the lamp in the dining area. And I am no friend of mirrors so was happy to see that gone over the fire place.

I really was not surprised by the horror stories, more surprised by the few good results.
What I hate about most of these shows, is giving average punters an unrealistic idea of what renovations take, with either much done off camera, or budgets, or skill levels. But the real pet hate I have for these programmes, is the manufactured drama that goes on - so completely obvious that it is manufactured. I have no idea why so many people believe the carp that goes on in these shows.
My next pet peeve (okay, no real shortage on the peeves) are RUclipsrs that seem to have no idea of the difference between restoration and 'renovation', the latter usually meaning gutting it back to shell, and all original features lost. Case in point, a neglected mid-century modernist house, which sure, had problem areas that did need removal, but was gutted it back to frame losing ALL original features. A design crime. In the beginning they pretended to care about the house, but clearly they did not, they are just making their living off YT. And of course they were youngsters with zero appreciation of history, design, ethics or anything else, just YT 'fame'.

For your information, I am conservative. I am not racist. Well no more that any other person. We all are to some degree. I am not Homophobic. My daughter came out at 15. I supported her. She now has decided non-binary suits her better. Fine. Whatever makes my girl happy, makes me happy.

People need to stop blatantly knowingly lying about solar energy. For a blatant form of reality. Thank you Morocco for the easy way to show how bad solar is. Morocco built a solar farm the size of the state of Arizona. To power their country they would need to built 18 more to have 19 solar farms the size of the state of Arizona. Morocco uses 1/17th the power that the city of Tucson which is a single city in the state of Arizona. Now lets do a bit of math. Sense to power Morocco you need 19 solar farms the size of Arizona and Morocco uses only 1/17th the power of the city of Tucson you would need a solar farm 323 times the size of the state of Arizona to power the 1/7th most power requirement city in the state of Arizona. 323 times the size of Arizona is basically the entire surface of Earth, the moon, and a bit of another planet. Yea so in reality in order to power a single house using only solar panels you would need to cover a land mass the size of New York City in solar panels to power 1 house. Yea that is reality on how garbage solar actually is and people who keep blatantly lying about it being good are either too stupid to understand reality or they are knowingly lying to scam you. Hell Morocco acts like its saving the world when they had to use the land mass of 3 other countries to have enough space to build 1 giant solar farm that took them 28 years to build and costed them $78 trillion dollars. A single tanker truck of gasoline powers all of Morocco for 3 months and would cost only $2000. Also that solar farm well over 80% of the solar panels have been dead for at least a decode and the entire farm has not produced any power at all for half a decade because the solar panels exploded from all the radiation and heat they produce and for a while the area around it heated up to a massive 900 degree barrier making travel to the area impossible and its gone down somewhat but that area still is on average around 450 degrees. Every single solar farm has an area effect of at least 900 degrees for miles around it because green energy is highly dangerous and not good for the planet at all. Hell people keep believing solar sailing is going to be the future of space travel but here is a reality not a single solar panel has produced any energy for anything in space for 35 years. The international space station has a descent sized giant alkaline battery that is powered by a diesel generator that is hooked up to a 2000 galloon gas tank hooked up to the international space station. The international space station uses less power in 6 months than a single washing machine uses for a single wash. They have to replace the fuel in that giant tank about every 7 to 8 years so its really easy to top it off with a couple cans of diesel every 1 to 2 months. Every time they go to the space station 1 or 2 diesel gas cans is used to top off the diesel tank which is blatantly nothing.

I do not know why my first comment was deleted. Maybe it was too fact-checking for someone... It is so easy to verify the above that it is absurd to write sth like this.
Ouarzazate Solar Power Station - the biggest solar plant in Marocco has 17 km2. Arizona has 295 254 km². What means that Arizona could contain 17.400 of such power plants (instead of one). You would need 50 of these to power up entire Arizona.
