I heard this on a FM station today in Winnipeg, are you kidding me? It isn't one of the mind numbing songs on the ever rotating 50 song playlist....there is hope for us all.
Heard this on the radio at work in like 1995, thought it was the best fucking thing they ever done..and the best thing I've ever heard on mainstream radio.
I was one of the lucky ones to see gord go into one of his rants at a live show. What a great artist he was! Miss you sorely as one of 35 million other Canadians do today! RIP buddy, thanks for all the awesome memories!
Other way around I think, I think this rant came before “locked in the trunk of the car” came out. Definitely not the last time he put words from a rant into a new song too haha
Dunno if they ever did a video for "Highway Girl", but I always pictured the band starting to play it at a sound check, before a concert. The intro seems to have that empty stadium echo, so I see the guys just warming up, in front of all the empty seats, with road crews setting up. As they get into the song, Gord seems to be having g flashbacks, going back and forth between the sound check and a real concert, and by the time the song is over, he can't tell if he's singing at the sound check or in front of a sold out crowd...
Gord and The Hip united Canadians coast. They were the band we all pointed to when someone asked what it is to be Canadians. You'd just have to hand them a Hip album and say hear listen to this. Enough said.
The genius songwriting of the late Gord Downie, The Hip are Canadian Royalty.

I dared Joe Aiello to play this on Power 97 Monday morning…. Let’s see if he takes the dare.
Once heard a cover band play this with the rant included. I booed them. Only Gord was allowed to do it!

Great Tragically Hip tune one of my favorites
I like how he puts some of the lines from "locked in the truck of a car" into the double suicide story

Ryan0413 yeah didn’t “Ahead by a Century” come out of a rant over New Orleans?
It’s the origins of “locked”
