I have an accurate story of a call at night that scared the shit out of me and my mom so here it goes: I was asleep when I awoke to my mom urgently waking me to notify me that someone had just called to her from our gate which was not visible from our porch due to some trees and the winding of the driveway, anyway when I awoke I instinctively told her to arm herself and I did the same with a glock. Shortly after this I went outside and made sure to check the perimeters, scanning around and looking for said person/thing. After I had gotten done, I went back to the front to fire a warning shot into the ground, a little after this we hear another “hey!” similar to the one my mom had heard before. I then told the voice that they should get the fuck out of there and that we were not going to help them in anyway. I suppose that worked since the perpetrator ended up not doing anything else to us that night. More context to the story- we live in the boonies, about 1 mile from the next neighbor, on a dirt road, and about 10 miles from town. This was chilling only due to the fact that we know that people that are out late on our road are most likely doing something they should not be doing (due to the fact that not many people live on this road). Hope this creeps you out a little bit because it definitely activated my fight or flight when it happened.
I heard someone say “Hey” while I was hiking and I look behind me and I hear it again but behind a tree. So I go to the tree to investigate and it was a damn crow that learned how to say “Hey”. 😂

Happened to me once. Without pause I whipped out my dick and furiously beat off while glaring into the darkness, unblinking. After frothing at the mouth for about two minutes I could hear someone.... something... gently weeping in the shadows. Needless to say, I was left alone that eve.
I’m a city suburbs girl married to a country boy from Appalachian mountains. Whenever I visit there, it’s so beautiful just like a different world. What saddens me is that the people are so poor there and they have been exploited by big mining companies for generations. The poverty is heartbreaking. I know that the city folks look down on these people, but I find them to be kind and welcoming and just so genuine.
I would agree most probably are. But there's a very fine line between country folk. And people who want to be left alone. The harder they are to get to.. the less interaction they want with this fucked up world

I live in and grew up in the Appalachian mtn.’s. I’ve always been a loner and I spent a lot of my preteen to adult teen life in the woods alone and yes I have heard my name being called on many occasions while riding my horse along old logging trails. I’ve seen and heard unexplainable things in these woods, crazy things.
I have ridden my horse all over the woods in Cross Lanes and never had anyone call my name... unless it was a person. I spent many happy days walking through the woods but never saw anything unusual. My grandfather and his grandfather always went "singing", digging Ginseng, and that is in deep woods. He never saw anything either but it makes for good tourism. 😂 Although, once I took a girl horseback riding with me and we went up to a cemetery, and I spooked her pretty good. I told her I saw a little child sitting on the headstone. LOL By the time we started home, it was getting dark, and she was worried we were lost. But, I told her the horses wanted fed and they knew how to get home... but I had to listen to her whine for a little bit. 😂
I have a wendigo story from the Appalachian mountains in Virginia! I was probably about 5-6 years old, it's dark at this point and I'm standing around a fire pit when I got up to wander around and find sticks/rocks, whatever made my little heart happy lol. All of a sudden I heard a strangely familiar voice calling me from the dark woods, behind my great grandpa's shed. It sounded like my mother, who was NOT in my life at this point, so naturally, I went running to see her! Then I heard my great grandfather frantically YELL my name, and told me to get my ass on the porch which was 80 feet away or so. As soon as I started walking I heard and felt a breathy, low pitched, gravely growl right behind me. I was too afraid to turn around, but I'm damn sure there was a wendigo behind me!! I feel so lucky to be alive honestly! I grew up hearing and reading stories about those woods, that I was NEVER allowed to enter. I figured it was just because of the snakes, poisonous plants, etc. Now I know how many people went missing in those woods or had terrifying experiences!!

I never heard or seen anything, but felt an evil presence, and if I stopped something was going to grab me, especially going up the steps (12 steps) my legs got so weak they barely held me up. But I didn't stop and I didn't look back until I got inside.

I can never take these stories or suspicions seriously. Where im from, the people swear if you go into the jungle alone at night and dont ask our ancestors for permission, in a very specific way and in our language, they may not recognize you as one of their own. Then you are either attacked, or you get sick and could die. They say sometimes you'll feel an intense sense of dread and danger. Ive forgotten to do this before while hunting and ive sat alone in the pitch black of the deep jungle to rest and ive honestly never felt more at peace and connected to the land around me. It was comforting. I guess it comes down to what the individual chooses to believe and their attitude towards these things. I tend to believe my ancestors mean me no harm and i dont need to speak to them in our language to be recognized. I tend them land, respect it and preserve it the best i can. Have never had a bad experience in my 31 years there.
There are several variations of the “shadow beings”. good tips to follow 1-never explore the woods at night; only flee if you have to and if you have to then be as prepared as possible 2-look everywhere you step, for you might step on a copperhead 3-never whistle in the woods; hungry creatures can find you easily 4-always bring a flashlight; you never know if you will end up stranded in these woods or not 5-always have a weapon, no matter what weapon it is, keep one with you at all times 5-be careful with who you interact; I heard rumors about cannibals here 6-be quiet, and listen, for someone or something could be stalking you. 7-bring supplies for stuff like campfires, tents, etc. 8- always be with at least one buddy you know in the woods 9-if you get lost, be extremely careful and know where you are at, since the mountains have bad wifi signals
Rules 1 & 6 I'd have to debate. Rule 1 is true is true if you dont have a flashlight, aside from that there isnt any more danger at night than there is during the day. Rule 6 is horrible advice in bear country, you want them to know you're in the area, the last thing you want to do is make the bear think you're sneaking up on it. Edit: Also rule 9... When I lived in Georgia and was like 7yrs old my best friend and I would hear voices calling our names from the woods. We knew to run. It was usually close to being dark outside also. Very scary!
In indian culture if here things calling your name and you look around for it, you have basically give it a signal you acknowledge it and things latch on to you. Also most of things are commonly near water. Take it as is, I haven't run into this things in the woods but once in a while when I am home alone I hear my name and ignore it or imagination is faulty.

Not in the Appalachia, but here in the Rockie Mountains, we would go fishing at 11 Mile Lake in Colorado and would sleep on the bank of the lake. We'd stay up at night and night fish but more than a couple times once we would start dozing off I would here something say my name right in my ear and would instantly wake up to nothjng around us and no one else awake. It was always in a womans voice when I heard it.
It only happened to me once, and I recognized one's of my aunts voice. She died that night, even though dozens miles away from where I was living, at the time.

I did that before. I heard my name behind and i said "what". I was in a camping trip at this time and i was around 14-15. I was walking with my brothers and heard my name called from behind. It was around 5 pm at this time, after i reply and looked back, i saw nothing. Something only happened when i went to sleep. I had nightmare of being choked by a women that stared right in my eyes with a bloody eye and rotten teeth. I couldn't move, or anything. I closed my eyes for a long time and then i woke up in the middle of the night in my tent gaspng for air. My brother was on his phone so he saw me gasping and wonder wtf happened. He said he heard me making noises in my sleep but just shrugged it off. I explained what i dreamt abd stayed up that night never going to sleep.

I was hunting in West Virginia with my cousin And we were primitive hunting, which meant we only had the bows and spears we made, i heard an animal walking towards us, at first i thought it was a deer, so we both got down and prepared to shoot, then it stopped, and we hear this blood curtailing scream. It sounded like a goat and a woman screaming. Then we ran as fast as we could and i heard it clomping through the tall grass and thick brush, we ran about 2 miles back to camp. That happened 3 weeks ago we never told anyone and we dont want too
I was camping along a stream in a holler near my home. I would go down and fish at night and only one time had I heard my name called. I had gotten into my bivy and fell asleep. Around 3 am I had to take a p. My small fire was out so I turned on the red light feature on my head lamp and went to go when I heard my name called. It was mimicking a recent girlfriend and we had broken up. I knew immediately it wasn't her. I turned off the light and made it back to my bivy. It called out again. This time a bit closer. I already knew the rule. I heard some rustling but I kept quiet. I had about 3 hours or so before sun up. It was the longest stretch of time before the sky began to brighten. As soon as I could see clearly I packed up and hiked out. While I still to this day hike and fish that holler, I do not go to that spot after sunset.
I'm not so sure it's all made up. We had something in our house mimicking various family members for a rather short period of time. It was usually heard by more than one family member at a time and the person being mimicked was never at home at the time.

So, 'tis the season, right? I listened to some stories about various Appalachian boogeymen. The main rules seem to be "if you hear a voice in the woods, don't answer", "if you hear footsteps behind you, don't turn around", "If you hear someone speak your name in the woods, no you didn't". Appalachian spooky amazing stories. But I'd like to submit this for eastern Oregon and Washington, something FAR scarier in my opinion ..... I've heard the same rules in some areas of Oregon, always those rules are regarding the mountainous areas of our great state. Not talking about "bigfoot". Here in East Oregon, bigfoot isn't a large part of our mythology. But that "thing" that you don't turn around to, the THING you don't run away from, that THING that cries like a distressed screaming baby during the night in the forest?? I've heard it twice. Once at night when I couldn't see it and that baby screaming sent chills up my spine during the dark part of the night in the deep woods. That baby screech when there's no moon, no light, runs right up your spine. Years later I saw one of THEM in broad daylight, and I heard it scream and mewl like a dying baby, and it made my skin crawl. ....Ignore it, ignore the screaming of that "infant", get to shelter and if you have a gun, have it loaded and ready. This predator knows how to "speak" to you, it knows human frailty, it waits with claws and fangs. It speaks the language of human weakness. And for that, it should be feared most among all the monsters of the night.
As a definite human Appalachian resident, I can deny this. It is perfectly safe to turn around, in fact, a human clown will be there to entertain you had have fun and give out candy. Again, I am human.

That’s a Native American thing. We have the same rules in the 4 corners mountains. My grandfather always said to be at home or at a campsite at night. Never travel at night. Some things are not afraid of modern weapons like a bow or rifle.

So apparently their was am Indian graveyard up on the hill...well one day i was off and i went up their. I heard my mother call my name . Then got lost... All within 100 yards from the house and or the road. Spooky shit in the woods forsure

Even if there are no beings or creatures that lurk and spy on you in the Appalachian forest, the general vibe of those forests make you feel like something is spying on you. The types of trees, rocks, vegetation, the climate, the age of the mountains, the shapes of the mountains.....all of that comes together to create the dark, spooky atmosphere that the Appalachian forest has.
This is something I have a hard time believing. My mom went into the woods *ALONE* when she was at her grandpa’s house in the Appalachian mountains and she heard nothing like this. My dad grew up in the Appalachian mountains and I’m sure he’s probably been in the woods alone or in the woods after dark and hasn’t seen anything or heard anything like that. I live in NC and my family owns a property in the mountains near Saura Town. The property originally belonged to a family in the early 1900's or late 1890's. The family died off one by one, the daughter burned in a campfire, the moter died from a heart attack, qnd the father died from falling off a very steep ledge behind pond. The area used to be an Indian camp where a battle happened because the chief's daughter was kidnapped. I didn't realize that folktale of Appalachia was true until i heard whispers in a language i didn't know coming from the bottom of slopes. I could tell i was being watchrd by something. Me and my grandfather went hiking to post property signs and we came to this old Indian graveyard, which was where the family was buried. I saw a humanoid thing fucking crawl from one tree to a bush on top a cliff and heard an orchestra of owls. Another time i saw things in the forest was when i went hiking and camping with a summer camp group in the Uwarrie*? Park when i set up a hammock in front of a very steep slope that probably went up maybe 80-150 feet and i saw things move during sundown.
Those mountains are older, and once we're as big as the Himalayas. They were here before the continents split apart. The Scottish Highlands are part of that chain, as are the Atlas mountains.
Yeah if you think you see what looks a little bit like a raccoon or a little bit like an owl but completely indistinguishable as either peeking out from around the side of a tree about 9-12 feet up. Just keep your eyes on it as you pass it. I lived in the forests of west virginia for 6 months. I worked a swing shift job at the time. So sometimes I was up at night for long periods at camp or even taking short hikes. Well yeah one night, I thought I saw something on this tree. Had my really good magnifyable flashlight on me zoomed it on the tree and it slipped behind the tree. I had to go that direction on my meaningless hike haha so I just summed it up as an animal. Well I kept my flashlight on the tree as I passed it and it was 15 feet off trail. No sooner than I passed the tree 5 feet I saw it tracking me from behind the same tree. Idk how to describe it honestly. I was armed, I have a very respectable nature with the woods and I feel like those spirits protect the woods so I wasnt scared. One I dont hear many people mention anymore tho is dont be out in the woods alone at 3am. It really is the witching hour. Cant say Ive noticed any correlation of weirdness with full moons but the full moon definitely adds ambiance if you are out at 3am.

Nobody in the WV part of Appalachia is going to ignore a cry for help just like a few weeks ago when a guy found a missing girl in the woods. There are no special rules except be respectful and don't trespass! As a rule if someone calls your name we're gonna go see who it is we don't ignore nothing that's just nuts. No fucking way. I had a real encounter with one in Colorado. Didn't know what it was called but it was my mom's voice calling me from the tree line. It spooked the birds so it wasn't in my head. Never felt dread like that go through me before and since. I walked almost two miles backwards slow as hell. And this happened mud afternoon as well.
Those are the same rules I used at work. If the supervisor calls your name or whistle. Don't answer. Don't run. Don't turn around. Don't go toward it.

I’m a city suburbs girl married to a country boy from Appalachian mountains. Whenever I visit there, it’s so beautiful just like a different world. What saddens me is that the people are so poor there and they have been exploited by big mining companies for generations. The poverty is heartbreaking. I know that the city folks look down on these people, but I find them to be kind and welcoming and just so genuine.
City folk look down on us but they are going to be the ones going out first when SHTF. Now that will be vindication.

I live in and grew up in the Appalachian mtn.’s. I’ve always been a loner and I spent a lot of my preteen to adult teen life in the woods alone and yes I have heard my name being called on many occasions while riding my horse along old logging trails. I’ve seen and heard unexplainable things in these woods, crazy things.

Although, once I took a girl horseback riding with me and we went up to a cemetery, and I spooked her pretty good. I told her I saw a little child sitting on the headstone. LOL
By the time we started home, it was getting dark, and she was worried we were lost. But, I told her the horses wanted fed and they knew how to get home... but I had to listen to her whine for a little bit. 😂

I have a wendigo story from the Appalachian mountains in Virginia! I was probably about 5-6 years old, it's dark at this point and I'm standing around a fire pit when I got up to wander around and find sticks/rocks, whatever made my little heart happy lol. All of a sudden I heard a strangely familiar voice calling me from the dark woods, behind my great grandpa's shed. It sounded like my mother, who was NOT in my life at this point, so naturally, I went running to see her! Then I heard my great grandfather frantically YELL my name, and told me to get my ass on the porch which was 80 feet away or so. As soon as I started walking I heard and felt a breathy, low pitched, gravely growl right behind me. I was too afraid to turn around, but I'm damn sure there was a wendigo behind me!! I feel so lucky to be alive honestly! I grew up hearing and reading stories about those woods, that I was NEVER allowed to enter. I figured it was just because of the snakes, poisonous plants, etc. Now I know how many people went missing in those woods or had terrifying experiences!!

I never heard or seen anything, but felt an evil presence, and if I stopped something was going to grab me, especially going up the steps (12 steps) my legs got so weak they barely held me up. I can never take these stories or suspicions seriously. Where im from, the people swear if you go into the jungle alone at night and dont ask our ancestors for permission, in a very specific way and in our language, they may not recognize you as one of their own. Then you are either attacked, or you get sick and could die. They say sometimes you'll feel an intense sense of dread and danger.
Ive forgotten to do this before while hunting and ive sat alone in the pitch black of the deep jungle to rest and ive honestly never felt more at peace and connected to the land around me. It was comforting. I guess it comes down to what the individual chooses to believe and their attitude towards these things. I tend to believe my ancestors mean me no harm and i dont need to speak to them in our language to be recognized. I tend them land, respect it and preserve it the best i can. Have never had a bad experience in my 31 years there.
There are several variations of the “shadow beings”. 1-never explore the woods at night; only flee if you have to and if you have to then be as prepared as possible
2-look everywhere you step, for you might step on a copperhead
3-never whistle in the woods; hungry creatures can find you easily
4-always bring a flashlight; you never know if you will end up stranded in these woods or not
5-always have a weapon, no matter what weapon it is, keep one with you at all times
5-be careful with who you interact; I heard rumors about cannibals here
6-be quiet, and listen, for someone or something could be stalking you.
7-bring supplies for stuff like campfires, tents, etc.
8- always be with at least one buddy you know in the woods
9-if you get lost, be extremely careful and know where you are at, since the mountains have bad wifi signals
Rules 1 & 6 I'd have to debate. Rule 1 is true is true if you dont have a flashlight, aside from that there isnt any more danger at night than there is during the day. Rule 6 is horrible advice in bear country, you want them to know you're in the area, the last thing you want to do is make the bear think you're sneaking up on it.

In indian culture if here things calling your name and you look around for it, you have basically give it a signal you acknowledge it and things latch on to you. Also most of things are commonly near water.

Not in the Appalachia, but here in the Rockie Mountains, we would go fishing at 11 Mile Lake in Colorado and would sleep on the bank of the lake. We'd stay up at night and night fish but more than a couple times once we would start dozing off I would here something say my name right in my ear and would instantly wake up to nothjng around us and no one else awake. It was always in a womans voice when I heard it.
It only happened to me once, and I recognized one's of my aunts voice. She died that night, even though dozens miles away from where I was living, at the time.

I did that before. I heard my name behind and i said "what". I was in a camping trip at this time and i was around 14-15. I was walking with my brothers and heard my name called from behind. It was around 5 pm at this time, after i reply and looked back, i saw nothing. Something only happened when i went to sleep. I had nightmare of being choked by a women that stared right in my eyes with a bloody eye and rotten teeth. I couldn't move, or anything. I closed my eyes for a long time and then i woke up in the middle of the night in my tent gaspng for air. My brother was on his phone so he saw me gasping and wonder wtf happened. He said he heard me making noises in my sleep but just shrugged it off. I explained what i dreamt abd stayed up that night never going to sleep.

I was hunting in West Virginia with my cousin
And we were primitive hunting, which meant we only had the bows and spears we made, i heard an animal walking towards us, at first i thought it was a deer, so we both got down and prepared to shoot, then it stopped, and we hear this blood curtailing scream. It sounded like a goat and a woman screaming. Then we ran as fast as we could and i heard it clomping through the tall grass and thick brush, we ran about 2 miles back to camp.
That happened 3 weeks ago we never told anyone and we dont want too

I was camping along a stream in a holler near my home. I would go down and fish at night and only one time had I heard my name called.
I had gotten into my bivy and fell asleep. Around 3 am I had to take a p. My small fire was out so I turned on the red light feature on my head lamp and went to go when I heard my name called. It was mimicking a recent girlfriend and we had broken up. I knew immediately it wasn't her. I turned off the light and made it back to my bivy. It called out again. This time a bit closer. I already knew the rule. I heard some rustling but I kept quiet. I had about 3 hours or so before sun up. It was the longest stretch of time before the sky began to brighten. As soon as I could see clearly I packed up and hiked out. While I still to this day hike and fish that holler, I do not go to that spot after sunset.

This is something I have a hard time believing. My mom went into the woods *ALONE* when she was at her grandpa’s house in the Appalachian mountains and she heard nothing like this. The area used to be an Indian camp where a battle happened because the chief's daughter was kidnapped.
I didn't realize that folktale of Appalachia was true until i heard whispers in a language i didn't know coming from the bottom of slopes. I could tell i was being watchrd by something.
Me and my grandfather went hiking to post property signs and we came to this old Indian graveyard, which was where the family was buried. I saw a humanoid thing fucking crawl from one tree to a bush on top a cliff and heard an orchestra of owls.
Another time i saw things in the forest was when i went hiking and camping with a summer camp group in the Uwarrie*? Park when i set up a hammock in front of a very steep slope that probably went up maybe 80-150 feet and i saw things move during sundown.
What did it look like?
Those mountains are older, and once we're as big as the Himalayas. They were here before the continents split apart. The Scottish Highlands are part of that chain, as are the Atlas mountains.

Yeah if you think you see what looks a little bit like a raccoon or a little bit like an owl but completely indistinguishable as either peeking out from around the side of a tree about 9-12 feet up. Just keep your eyes on it as you pass it. I lived in the forests of west virginia for 6 months. I worked a swing shift job at the time. So sometimes I was up at night for long periods at camp or even taking short hikes. Well yeah one night, I thought I saw something on this tree. Had my really good magnifyable flashlight on me zoomed it on the tree and it slipped behind the tree. I had to go that direction on my meaningless hike haha so I just summed it up as an animal. Well I kept my flashlight on the tree as I passed it and it was 15 feet off trail. No sooner than I passed the tree 5 feet I saw it tracking me from behind the same tree. Idk how to describe it honestly. I was armed, I have a very respectable nature with the woods and I feel like those spirits protect the woods so I wasnt scared. One I dont hear many people mention anymore tho is dont be out in the woods alone at 3am. It really is the witching hour. Cant say Ive noticed any correlation of weirdness with full moons but the full moon definitely adds ambiance if you are out at 3am.

No, no, Dagon or his ilk are strictly relegated to a few Atlantic coastal regions. Maybe could show up if you come across a strange hidden lake or pool but you'd be lookin at about the same odds as runnin across an injured/grounded Polyp (which would actually be unlucky, even if it was dead!)

Im Joe this is my wife's account it's on my tablet but anyway: I grew up against the wilderness of WV and we live way back in the wilderness now and I've never heard this crap sorry. Nobody in the WV part of Appalachia is going to ignore a cry for help just like a few weeks ago when a guy found a missing girl in the woods. There are no special rules except be respectful and don't trespass! As a rule if someone calls your name we're gonna go see who it is we don't ignore nothing that's just nuts. I feel sorry for any monsters that would wander into our woods....maybe that's why I've never seen or heard anything and sometimes I spend hours in the woods at night. I'm the scariest thing in the woods if I catch you on my land man or monste don't matter to me...

No fucking way. I had a real encounter with one in Colorado. Didn't know what it was called but it was my mom's voice calling me from the tree line. It spooked the birds so it wasn't in my head. Never felt dread like that go through me before and since. I walked almost two miles backwards slow as hell. And this happened mud afternoon as well.
