Yeah 😊👍 I'm looking forward to seeing how the new wheels hold up to all the bumps and I'm sort of anxious to see how much of a change there might be in pit stops with the new wheels only having the single lug nuts
The last few years these tires weren't worth a crap!, so I cant wait to see how the new tire performs!, with the aluminum wheels!. With all the changes nascar has done and messed up the cup series this will be an interesting year.
@@Justaneon99 well yes the side wall os smaller, but with the old tire it look like 4 inches of free space, so 4 - 1.5 equals 2.5 inches of free space. could easily increase font size by 25% at least
Steve it will cause that. Tires want to go in direction of momentum when you turn there’s an equal and opposite force needed to the momentum. That produces a huge load on tires and when you turn wheel tires aren’t turned in direction of travel. The sidewall deflects and holds this excess force and pulls car in direction you wish to turn. This is called slip angle of contact patch. Shorter sidewalks will certainly effect grip.
Thats going to make tire strategy and more work for the drivers. Which is better and keeps thing interesting. Won't always be at the end of a stage when drivers come for tires could be sooner or later.
Yet we can't get the street legal equivalent that will handle the speeds they see on those tracks. But I race 90 miles of two lane public highway at triple digit speeds, Legally! Our biggest problem is tires that won't handle the sustained speeds for the distance we run.
Firestone has always had the best race tires. Period. Having the Clash in a stadium is just stupid. Averaging less than 70 mph , should just give them go karts. Stupid Stuff
ABOUT TIME Nascar modernized there Racecar’s with coil over suspension etc. as far as Goodyear Nascar is basically the only Race tires they build, ( NHRA doesn’t count ) NO INDYCAR/ F1 , very little Sports car participation, oh how the mighty have fallen
If you're talking about the exhaust pipes, they have almost always been coming out the side of the car. Where on the side is up to each team, but most have the exhausts closer to the front wheel as the side skirt can get real hot.
So the primary reason for this change is looks! 🤦♂️ I know from personal experience, going from a higher profile tire(65-series and up) to a low profile(60- and under), yields a sharper, more responsive - almost too responsive - steering experience. Especially at high speeds. I advise never changing wheel/tire size, or plus-sizing, for "looks". They can keep using the one-lug mounting system, but go back to a taller, narrower, and MORE STABLE tire & wheel combination
I think they were also looking to find a way to slow the cars down, because a larger wheel is harder to move, without reducing hp too much, but I don't know how important that was in development.
I'm concerned about the next gen cars sliding on the grass and dirt. Sports cars flip and the tires are similar. Next Nascar will take away the grass and put turf
Honestly the turf is better for nascar as it's much more forgiving as long as it's dry, mostly cause a small single car spin into the Grass won't rip the splitter or worse catch it and flip the car, and instead just slide across the top giving the driver the ability to get it back under control Although that does put a lot more dependence into the inside safer barrier when it comes to potential energy dampening in a full on wreck
NASCAR should have an anti-trust suit filed against them for promoting only one brand of tires all these years. I'm sure Hoosier, Bridgestone, Firestone or many other brands available in other racing formats that would have been able to give racers choices that would equal or exceed Goodyear's monopoly on tires. Too bad.
Does Goodyear have a monopoly in the public market? No. Does Nascar using only one manufacturer for fire suits mean that company has a monopoly? No, it’s a private market, so stop being authoritarian Phil
Tire wars have historically been horrible in NASCAR. It pushes both suppliers to make faster, more dangerous tires. Several drivers got injured and even killed due to the tire wars of the late 80s and early 90s
Misinformation. Slicks work fine on the street but you can’t afford to replace soft compound tires every 150 miles. Rain tires with grooves tread squirm and chunk on dry surfaces and are slower than slicks in corners. Quit promoting this meathead and get someone who knows something…….it’s 2022.
I would venture to say I know more than Larry about tires. I have read countless literature on the topic including the industries top accepted books. Furthermore I have raced oval short tracks for over 10 years. OP is correct there’s nothing different about road surface that would not make tires work that work on track surface. Softer compounds are used to maximize performance and street cars use harder tires to maximize lifespan. Treads create channels to dissipate water at cost of contact patch. The smaller contact patch surface area means the patch bears load over smaller area wearing tires quicker.

I'm eager to see how these new tires hold up during a full length race at top speeds and how well they hold up from the bumping, beating and banging.
I love the optical illusion of the new diameter tyre looking larger despite being pretty much the same size as the old tyre.
Ehhh it’s still a pretty significant difference especially at these loads
It’s not an optical illusion, it’s literally bigger

Good quality rubbers.
just seems like the loss of sidewall will be a problem cars get loose faster back into the wall more often so on so on
Don't think low profile tires would cause that. That would come down more to the compound of the rubber.

When angle of wheel and force it creates exceed the capacity of sidewall to deflect tire has no option but to slide
What is the total diameter of those tires?

the low profile tire is gonna roughen the ride, and is going to be easier to overheat, causing faster wear
