Moe: "Then you have to show the ID."
No Japanese people don't have to show any ID, nor do foreigners who live in Japan. They just have to write down their name and address. Some hotels will try to make foreigners (they judge who is a foreigner just by looking at you, which is silly and also impossible since zainichi look Japanese and speak perfect Japanese so they cannot be detected) hand over their passport or residence card and take a copy of them, but you do not have to obey them, they are not the police and they have no authority over you. In these recent times when identity theft is rife, protect your personal information and do not show it to hotel staff unless you really are a tourist. You only have to show your passport if you are a tourist and do not reside in Japan.
