Wow Tom Hanks has done loads, he fought in WW2 , he fought in Vietnam, then he ran a long way, then he worked for fedex and got stranded on a remote island for 5 years when his plane crashed, then he worked for United airlines and safely landed a loaded A320 on the Hudson river. What a great guy.
One of the movie's most poignant scenes is near the end. After he's rescued, he's hosted at a welcome home dinner, where he picks up a gas lighter and, with the flick of a finger, he has fire. And you can see on his face how he's struggling to come to terms with how easy it is now to have something that he had to work so hard for to get on the island. And nowadays, we have a panic attack if Facebook goes down for an hour. XD Castaway is an amazing movie for putting things into perspective.
I think this is some seriously underrated acting in this scene, his voice crack actually adds to it. He had been stuck on the island for a couple weeks at this point, little to eat, having to learn everything on the fly, and for all we know he could have been trying to create fire for more than a day, and it finally works, that's pure joy in his voice when he screams. Fire! He's finally made something, technology, the lowest form, but technology all the same.
2:09 is simply so beautifully portrayed. His happiness for something which he has achieved after million efforts...and the expectation of appreciation that he deserves. Wow...no words for his brilliant acting. Respect!
Well, I mean, put yourself in his position, finally getting the results that you wanted after a while of trying. Especially on the idea that he (chuck) was trying to make a fire, cut his hand, and eventually continued trying with a mangled hand. You'd be happy if you took as much as he did to get a fire, and had as much as he did.
This is probably the best scene of the movie. His happiness for his achievement was worthwhile. No one better than Tom Hanks can bring out that expression.
That was actually a genuine reaction because he really was there filming for hours until he finally got it. So his reactions and joy are a million percent true
Knowing that the director gave Hanks the basic knowledge of how to start a friction fire, and just recorded an hours worth of footage of Hanks trying to start a fire to get a genuine reaction just makes this scene 🔥
02:03 that reaction.. omg.. I laughed so bad.. ahahaaaaaa .. And he only wants some appreciation .. but no audience.. that turn to the ocean at the end.. omg..
I think they do. That's why its called value. That's literally the meaning of value. Something is valuable when its in short supply. I think everyone knows this.
SugarRay Yea, I totally lost it when he did that, lmao !!!! 😂🤣 but I laughed even harder at 0:13 when, out of frustration, he yelled at Wilson *"The air got to it !!!"* 😂🤣😂
Creating fire from nothing but the fuel itself is something anyone would be proud of. Getting through the frustrations, knowing its possible to have fire, pushing yourself to stay calm yet keep working on it. That's what's impressive, not the fire itself
@@sergioblanco6321 without fire, humans wouldn't survive the toba supervolcano, which reduced human population by mere thousands, if not hundreds due to the amount of ash and dust that blocked the sunlight, reducing gobal temperature and making thousands of humans all over the world freeze to death.
@@sergioblanco6321 F.Y.I the supervolcano i'm talking about is called the Lake Toba Supervolcano which exists in Indonesia. The Toba extinction happened some 75,000 years ago, humans would never have made it through without fire, it kept them warm, helped ward off predators and cooked their food.
I love this scene. 2 parts always make me laugh, when he finally gets a flame and he screams “fiiiiiiiiire!” and his voice cracks, and then “fireflies, go go! you’re free you’re free!” I don’t know why but I always chuckle.
This very scene helped me be successful in part of my scouting. Taught me everything a fire needs, oxygen, heat, and fuel! And when you slow down the speed at around 1:10, his wheeze sounds like a fire siren, LOL!😂
In a survival situation just the ability to start a fire is a massive morale boost. It’s an ultra hard thing to do and just accomplishing this let’s you know “If I can do this, I can get through anything”

Something primal about making a fire. I’ve heard bear grylls say that there was times he was out I. The wilderness and just getting a fire going boost moral and makes you try to survive more or something of that sort
I actually can relate! Just made fire in my own room after the first atempt did not work out. Felt the same way and started shouting Tom Hanks quotes :D
When you realize that every achievement in our civilization was made possible, because some prehistoric humans banged a couple rocks together and accidentally figured out how to create fire.
