9:53 THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART! Don't make excuses, just SIGN UP for a competition! I had a ton of fun at my first competition. It was very inviting and friendly. Many competitors say that they are really competing against themselves, trying to lift more than last time. We were all cheering each other on. My best lifts aren't impressive, but now that they are officially recorded in USAPL's database, it gives me more motivation to lift way more next time.
This helped take the anxiety of competing so much. Would LOVE videos like this. Maybe how to warm up at meets? Like getting adequately prepared for your opener without being fatigued, what to do to keep "warm" in between your attempts etc
Terrified to compete but pushing myself to find competitions near me. I was also considering dropping my weight to make a class below me since I'm fairly close, it's a relief to hear you recommend just going for it and reminding us to have fun with our lifting. Thankyou, Alan!
suske wiske Its the worst if you're like me. I'm a Civil Engineering student in Canada and since we deal with the US so much we have to learn everything in both sets of units!
Thanks so much for making this video! I have my first Powerlifting meet on the 25th March. I'm simultaneously excited and nervous. I have some numbers in mind that I want to hit too :D
Awesome of you to put this together and up!I'm sure it helped a lot of people who thought about competing but were insecure about it.Even though I've got 8 meets behind me, I still watched the whole thing.
What's RPE? About to do first meet. I think I'm just going to PR on every attempt for all three lifts. By the way, anyone know any good pre-workouts to try? Want to try one that will help me through meet day, which hopefully isn't too long. Hopefully I don't shit myself either as I've cut a lot of weight to be more competitive against these smaller chumps Thanks for all help Alan and please leave me some tips to make my first meet a blast!! Oh ya how do I program snatch?
pberi19k My mom's a total bitch who doesn't understand the intristic knowledge needed to perform the snatch. Besides she wasted her life doing bro splits and getting DQ'd from bodybuilding competitions. My other mom left her when I was 4 but I bet my genes came from her
Just came home after my first meet. Bench and squat events were kinda meh, yet the deadlift made up for it . I was the only one using conventional , yet 350kg pull felt amazing . Besides dizzyness ;D
Nothing would happen...As someone who used it often for shits and giggles: Viagra isnt as much of a magic boner pill as people try to make out of it. If you aren't sexually aroused literally nothing will happen. It HELPS with getting it up and keeping it up, but it doesnt enforce it.
just go for it. everyone at meets are super helpful and welcoming. ask them all the questions you have. everyone wants to win, but everyone gets cheered on the same. doesnt matter if you lift 10 pounds or 1000, everyone is cheering for you
Alan, great vid, but I was hoping you would talk a little about the warmup part. You obviously want to get warm and loose but not wear yourself out. How much weight do you warm up with and how many reps? For example, if I plan to d/l 200/210/220kg, what type of warm up weight and reps should I do and how soon before it's my turn?
I can relate to when he said “don’t eat or take anything you normally wouldn’t eat in a typical day…..I shit myself during my squat and it was the most embarrassing thing in the world that has happened to me. The worst part about that was not only did everyone know, but I had a smelly but the WHOLE ENTIRE MEET. One thing he probably didn’t mention is to take a dump before your meet, trust me on this one homies, you’ll save yourself from embarrassment.
Yeah, I'm 85 kilos so I'd probably cut 2 kilos to make weight for the meet, but I wouldn't do some stupid shit like 10+ kilos. I want a 225 bench, 285 squat and 315 DL before I enter a meet, and that's another 4-6 months of training (200/265/295 now). I did a mock meet with my friend the other day and I missed 205 on bench because I'm not used to pause reps, and I decided not to try 275 on squats because 265 felt hard coming up. Lifting was easier when I was 90 kilos (Yeah, like 11 pounds, but at that time I could hit 205/275/300 no problem).
I'm going to compete in 1 year My max deadlift is 190 kg Max squat is 130 kg Max bench 80 kg (yes I know I'm weak AF on the bench xD) Knowing this, what should my target weights to strive to be?
I would say train a really nice program between now and then, ending on a peak single for each (say dead 210 kg, squat 150 kg, bench 95 kg). Your openers should be roughly 10% below this, so 190/135/85 ish kg. Also, how tf is your dead so good if your other lifts are so awful? I squat 150 kg and bench 108 kg but my dead is only 163 (at least in my last comp). I think it's leverages.
I want to start powerlifting and need some questions answered. How many times do you do your bench, deadlift and squats each week? And can I do other lifting exercises? This was a great video. I am confused about all this....
General Frequency: Squat- 1-2 Bench: 2-4 Deadlift- 1-2 The more days you do, you'll want to throw in accessories. So if you do 2 days of deadlift, consider 1 day of competition deadlift and the second day is an accessory (such as a different stance- conventional v sumo- or RDL, block pulls, etc. Certainly do other lifts. While powerlifting is about the big three, most people need other lifts to make you a well balanced lifter
Just had my first meet and placed first! Was so stoked
Lexes O'Hara

Lexes O'Hara I'm following you on Instagram and congratulations.

What do u mean just sign up isn't there like a qualifying standard u have to be able to lift? Or do they just let anyone do it??

my fiance walked on me watching this at 4:02...We are not getting married anymore, thanks Alan!

I really thought all the people at the end were gonna do the “TRAIN UNTAMED!” Thing
THAT's what he's saying. I thought "Tread on time" was a strange thing to say...
Using the metric system? Have you guys finally come to your senses ;)
Technically we switched to metric in '75... we're just a country of scofflaws though.
suske wiske we have always used the metric system for weights
Officialy: Metric.
Properly: Imperial.
Very aggravating.

3:15 what a nice good looking squat
It is a perfect high bar squat. Who says that you can't lift big weights using high bar style. you definitely can.

You can tell he doesn't compete in the IPF.

Omg! Thank you so much! This was super helpful!! I’m preparing for my 1st power lifting meet!
"You know what's a way cooler way of beating everyone? Just getting really strong" fucking words to live by.
lol imagine giving a competitor a water with viagra in it 1-2 hours before his lift
His PR would probably go up considerably. Vasodilators are great for powerlifting.

My first meet is next Saturday, so pumped!
The information is gold Alan. Thanks
