Clutch Fan Removal with Duct Tape and a Strap

  • I got lucky most times with the clutch fan removal until I had to do one just to remove an aluminum timing cover to extract 2 stuck bolts. No matter how hard I tried to put extra tension on the fan belt and the pulley it wouldn't keep the pulley in place. I figured if I could keep that pulley locked it would come with a snap. It dawned on me to use the strap and let the layers build up and create friction to keep it in place. The pulley was too slick so I figured the duct tape would help it stay in place to build tension. It worked great. This video shows how I do it and the direction required to remove the clutch fan. As long as you have something solid to anchor the strap to the process is quick and easy. Really stuck fans take some muscle to break loose butt the strap I used is rated for 900 lbs so it can handle the load well. I used the alternator pulley as a guide and a bolt that was holding an accessory as my anchor. If all you have is the frame to anchor it to that will work better as it is stronger than the bolts. Just keep in mind when it lets go it will probably be with some force applied so whatever wrench you're using to turn it will more than likely release with that same amount of force. Watch your fingers and face.

Oh my God you truly are a genius. I was on RUclips about 45 minutes before I found your video. I struggled for 2 hours last night trying to get it off. I got it off to minutes with your idea. It would a been less but my pulleys dirty and my tape sucked ass. Why hats go off to you.

...and it works!! It took a lil more muscle power than I had but a tow strap and a pipe wrench worked on my 02 Dodge Ram 1500. Thank you, thank you for posting this vid!!

I watched several videos on how to stop the water pump pulley from turning when trying to remove the fan clutch, and struggled with that stupid thing for way to long. THIS method was the only thing that worked. Thank you for this posting!!!!!

    Thank you so much.

Absolutely "bloody marvelous mate" as we'd say in England. Made it really easy for me - I used some old plastic package banding I'd been saving for *years* - a small victory for us hoarders. Make sure to bash the wrench with a hammer too, as they all say.

Worked great, rented toolset from auto parts store. No luck they were worthless. My clutch was crazy seized, took me an 18 inch adjustable wrench and a 3 foot galvanized fence post for leverage. But the strap held, had to use a little longer piece of duct tape. Was my last attempt, it worked, thank you
