Old Snake is especially crazy at cqc and martial arts in general, even in his ~70 year old body I think he and TPP Venom Snake would be about evenly matched

I think the only way solid snake beat venom and big boss was because they were much older by then. Snake was only in his 20s. You can see how easily big boss disarms solid snake when their bodies are about the same age at the end of mgs4
Ah yes I know portable ops is kinda canon but Snakes stats were A Handguns, B Smg's, A AR's, B Shotguns, S CQC everything else A. I think he was the only Unit in the game with an S rank in CQC.
I think the idea was to create actions where Snake defended himself and repelled the Skulls, a sort of reward that the game gives you by not making you suffer damage if you have enough reflexes, rather than animations to rage against them and attack them ( in fact they do little damage to their life bar) but you are actually right it could hurt them much more if it continued to hit them during the stun
