Find leak. Plug every air vent on boat. Cut a plywood washboard with hole in it to fit leaf blower or large shop vac hose with vac running as blower. Object is to pressurize interior of boat. Mop exterior with soapy water to find leaks.
A technique I have seen, and similar to what I used on Aircraft, for locating deck leaks is to use some kind of blower to put positive pressure on the inside of your boat. ( A garden blower or something like that.) You need to seal up all your vents and hatches and around where you are pumping the blower in. Then on the outside start brushing a soapy solution around all the screws and potential holes through the deck. If there is a leak you will start to see bubbles form.
There are companies that specialize in leak detection. They often use infrared cameras. The can literally scope the area and see where the leak originates in your cockpit or cabintop by following the trail of water between the cabin top and the headliner, using infrared imaging. I use them the find leaks in commercial buildings I’ve owned down here in Portland, just south of Seattle. Fair winds,, RAN!
The Snowpocalypse was such a shock for us. It stalled everything for about a week, caused a lot of car wrecks. We aren't used to snow. Most years if we get any snow, it's only about a dusting up to an inch or so.
I've lived near Seattle for almost 30 years and have never had snow in my yard for so long a period, almost 6 weeks! We typically only get an inch or two of snow every 2-3 years and it is only for a few days but this year set records. Average winter temperature is 43º F to give you an idea. Hope you enjoyed your stay here in spite of the unusual weather. Thank you for sharing your adventures.
When possible cover with a waterproof tarp, the front section of the boat! Unroll sections of the tarp till its starts leaking! My parents had a RV made by Airstream (all aluminum) that leaked, we found the leak by using the tarp method! God Bless!
We are very experienced boaters in Seattle and glad you got to see all of the Scandinavian side of Seattle. We love boating and living here. We have never been to Sweden but would love to visit some day.
Bravo! The series on the top end rebuild was outstanding and this video's production was exquisite! Thank you for bringing such integrity to the genre.
Stevens Pass! Awesome! Durning the summer my parents would take my sister and myself up there for camping 40 plus years ago. I've been on the East coast of the US for 35 years now. Miss that gorgeous area alot. Thank you for sharing!!!
You two create the most beautiful videos. The photo quality is superb and they flow so nicely along with the music. Nice work! While you were getting the unusual snow (I grew up in Seattle), where I live now, 80 miles north and east of Seattle, we got 3 feet of snow in two days! It definitely was snowmageddon up here. I thought it would never stop. My Swedish line is through the Widstrom and Lindblad families 😊 Happy sailing!
I found RAN Sailing by accident and have loved your videos since you prepared to set sail from Sweden four years ago. I subscribed after watching your first video. Your videos are the best on RUclips, in my humble opinion. They keep getting better and better. Blessings to you on this Easter weekend.
I also like the way y'all keep us involved in your culture and much appreciate that such being real and we thank you for that another beautiful video with beautiful scenery thank you for taking the time to share it with us keep up the good work will see you on the next adventure be safe
Yea, I"m part of that Scandinavian heritage here in the US. I'm half Norwegian and half Swedish. My Dad who is full Swed participated in "set dey mi" not sure the spelling in Norway years ago. I know I have distant relatives in Sweden as my Dad and Mom visited them when they were over there about fifteen years ago.
We need a Hunting the leak segment. Maybe a moisture meter could help trace a path through the woodwork? Giving you a general idea of its origin. Other than that I think you may have to check every deck penetration and reseal? A lovely big boat visit but the Drone seemed a bit excessive. :P
Johan and Malin, another superb video! Keep the dream. As much as you enjoy flying along with sailing, I can picture you guys on the beautiful boat with the helicopter! The way you share your lives with us is so refreshing. Peace
Johan and Malin, I feel like I missed you! I would have loved to do the Seattle Boat Show with you. If you are still in the area, I can help with marinas and other life stuff - I'm a local. I realize you are probably gone by the time I see your video, but if you come back, I'm here to help too. Great stuff to show you.
It seems strange that I started following you when you were in the South Pacific and now you are in the US and walking on trails that I have also walked! Get your boat out of that cold weather and it will probably stop leaking!!!! It's not leaking - it's complaining! LOL
Wow, after an enforced six month YT break, I've finally caught up with your travels. Your cruise along the coast of Alaska and BC has been an inspiring, heartwarming and learning journey for me as well. By far the best YT content I've seen. Your mellow delivery, palpable excitement at new experiences, coupled with professional editing is outstanding. Yours thankfully, a vicarious crewmember :-)
Wonderful to see you two experiencing some home/history away from home. Your adventures and beautiful stories just continue to amaze and entertain us all. Thank you for all your effort and time put into Rans wonderful videos. Glad you enjoyed the NW snowmageddon...
Great video you two. Always a pleasure and always relaxing to watch. Also nice that you hooked up with Onboard Lifestyle in Seattle. Enjoy their channel too. Teal has mad building skills.
Johan told where the word "Styrbord" comes from, but he did not tell what it means in English. Styra = to steer. Styrbord, the side where the boat/ship is steered. The old English form of the word was steorbord, which later became starboard. So, the word has nothing to do with stars. The port (left) side is called "Babord", it is an old scandinavian form of the word "bakbord" (=backboard). The board that was on the backside of the helmsman. The English word "port" is much newer. Seafarers used the word "ladbord" (the side where the ship is loaded from) until the British navy officially chose the word "port" (the side that was facing the wharf/land) in mid 1800's, because ladbord and starboard sounded too similar. Even though ships have used symmetrical rudders on the centerine from 1400's, these old words are still used. And not just in seafaring, but also in aviation. Even the international space station has starboard and port sides rather than right and left sides.
This year was the first time in 10 years I did not go to the Seattle Boat show. So I missed you guys and the snow. Well I have seen plenty of snow since we lived in Jackson Hole Wyoming for 20 years. What I don’t understand is how an aluminum boat can leak water. It must be a hatch or window that is the culprit. I hope you find it soon. Nobody likes to sleep on the couch. 😩😏
BTW Ran, I forgot to add that since your SV was in cool/cold environments and you made your trip through the sub-tropics and heavy seas on your way back to another cold port environment that your leak is now more pronounced (wider/bigger) in the cold port and you are seeing more evidence of it. Might be a good time to dig into it before it warms up and the gap gets tighter. Might also help indicate where leak is since you know the nature of your Aluminum SV and how much expansion/contraction there could be with it and the accessories installed in it. Just a thought....
With a screwed down teak deck a leak/leaks can come from anywhere, especially as the teak ages. Many folks remove the teak, fix all the screw holes, and paint the deck or cover with a glue down synthetic teak looking product. I'm not sure on RAN, but guessing that stainless steel screws were used to attach the teak to the aluminum deck. That's an additional problem of electrolysis between the different metals. Basically all this is just a recipe for leaks.
Hello Ran, Since you are at a dock with pressurized water you can get a dry day and target items where you have dissimilar material joined/sealed and spray one item hard, check for leak, if no leak, dry area protect from getting wet again. Pick another item to spray down, keep doing it until you find your item/items causing your leak. I actually had to run a small sprinkler (like one of those cheap donut hole sprinklers) upside down over items until I could see the wicking through the items seals down stream of it. It is probably big enough now with a single concentrated spray/leak test to find it or them. The dissimilar materials are usually cause because it heats and cools at different rates, stressing the sealant. I would be hesitant using dyes, because of staining your interior materials. Double check top hull bolt-through penetrations also that are old, that may have not been potted/sealed. Good luck, leaks are a PITA if you let them get ahead of you.
Using foscen water dye might help track it down to. But doesn't matter to them now but some other owners might benefit to the idea for their leak problems ??
Three of my maternal great grandparents came from Sweden. As a child, we ate Scandinavian food periodically, but I was spared lutefisk. Always love your videos, especially those in which you share your Swedish heritage. Can’t wait to see you sailing again!
We had a very similar leak problem in a Catalina 30 that we had. My wife woke up in 3 inches of water one morning after leaving the bimini off one night during a rain storm. The water was coming in the binacle at the various control openings. Your boat arrangement looks similar. That might be the source.
When we look for leaks on a dry day take a hose and run it over defrent areas of the deck tell you get the leak

It´s friiday, and we are lying on our boat watching RAN Sailing. Could live be better? Yes! We see you guys showing an Elan Impression! Just the boat we are lying on. Very nice Video to us, Thx
Spent some time in Sweden & Norway back in 83 as I was deployed with the U.S. Army for Reforger and we had way more snow then that and they all seemed like this is normal. That snow looked like a light dusting compared to the snow we had there. Surely you all must be good with snow & the cold, Right? Love your channel and yes I've been a subscriber for about a year now. Thanks for the show. Lee A Benson 11B U.S. Army (RET.)
Been subscribed since your first snowy departure from Sweden. Love your voyaging and your style. Thanks for sharing so creatively. Fair winds, friends! 🤙🥂
All those windows are leak points. Btw I'm about 1 hour north of Seattle. I have lived here 40 years and for the first time we had snow on the ground for 30+ days
Another great video. The quality of your videos is so good, I wonder if a lot of people are watching on their TV. On my TV I can not comment, like or register, could be the reason for the low registration. 👫⛵🔧🛷😁
Nice video, that snow is not looking good. Glad spring is finally hear. Good luck finding those leaks, I have some in my cabin that I can't find either.
Another beautiful instalment of RAN Sailing. I am curious how you like your new video camera. Are you using it as often as your DSLR and your GP ? Thanks again for giving us all our Friday dose of pure joy.
Thanks Murray! Between the video cam Sony a53 and the mirror less Sony a6500 we prefer the a6500 most of the times. Mostly because of the bigger sensor. 😊 But the a53 has really good zoom, ir nightshoot and a super nice stabilizer. Cheers!
One can live with a interior deck being damp , but a wet bed is just misery. Hope you are able to isolate the leaks eventually. Loved your video, as usual, you two do a wonderful job creating and publishing them. "Snowpocalypse" Ha, I expected 10 meters with that title. We got at least as much as seen in the video here in N. Georgia last winter. You definitely need that Viking head gear, priority ONE! Fair seas!
A great video again. I noticed a few Hunters in the scenes around the marina. Ours is set up for sailing in warmer climates though. Happy travels till next time.⛵️😎
Another F.A.B.U.L.O.U.S. vlog form RAN Sailing. Loved the museum tour as my bride and I love history. The snow you can keep as we left Maine to get to warm and never go back to cold. LOL If you ever come around to the east coast of Florida, let us know. :-) ☺️✨🏖✨⚓️✨⛵️✨

14:40 "when it rains we put a bucket here next to Johan's head" got to be the funniest thing I've heard for some time.
Proud to be of Swedish heritage, and a Patreon of Ran Sailing.
Seattle seems like a great place to discover leaks on your boat.

I like the way you keep culture part off your videos. Thank you to taking us so far away! Keep going.
I've learned more about coastal Alaska and the PNW from RAN than I have from living in the USA (E. coast) for 40+ years. Thanks Malin & Johan!

"We need some gear like this" -- Johan, I can only imagine the welcome you'd get sailing into a harbor in viking armor! 😊

Sharing your world through your eyes, Priceless . . .thanks for doing it.
Thanks, Malin and Johan, once again for an entertaining view of your Seattle stay! See you next week ;-)
Love all your great vedeos and please keep them comming.
The leaks may be a harbinger of some major major deck work. Good luck if it comes to that!
maybe you can put food color in water, pour it in different places near the leak and when it's green you know it's out there somewhere.
You also migth be able to use electrical resistance to find where on the deck the water enters.

Winter in Seattle
You are cold weather people truly!
I hope you are well and find some warmer tropics
I remembered the hiking in flip-flops in the "jungle" a "few weeks" before.
Great content. As always.
Thanks for share your movies.
Always great content
That's a great idea to use the 120v battery charger for your 230v system!
Nice video, that snow is not looking good. Glad spring is finally hear. Good luck finding those leaks, I have some in my cabin that I can't find either.

Wished I had visited you while you were here. I live on that hill directly to the west. And that was the most snow in 10 years!

Thanks Marlin and Johan for another fine video! I always look forward to a new adventure with you two, and you never disappoint!!
Malin, you should buy the 55ft boat with the heli pad. Pefect for your second career as a pilot. 100K subs is just around the corner!
Their new "drone"! Quite an upgrade from the current one!
Nice you made it to Germantown!!! Leavenworth is a Washington gem.
So Glad to have become a subscriber since the beginning. Always great content. Love your adventures and DYI on Ran!
Phrase of the week: "Squeezy Snow!" :)

In 2015, Pip Hare did a video on a gybe preventer. Good info
Love your videos, regards from Argentina.
I would have expected you to build a snowman on your dock!...Thanks as always for great video's.
Another great post.
Nice to see my city through someone else’s eyes. Nice that guy took you around. I imagine your gone by now. The museum of flight is interesting. Nice vid
Guys!! For the leak. Buy colour food powder (different colours) and start testing. One every day.
I know you filmed this a while back but it just snowed here in Northern Nevada again last week. Great video guys.
I looked at that Malo while I was there at the boat show. It's a beautiful boat.
It’s a super nice boat! Too expensive for us though... 😊
My bro in law had similar leaks in his aft cabin. We re-caulked all his winches and the problem went away.
great opening shot. boat looks amazing covered in snow.
It’s raining in our bed. That made me laugh.
Always look forward to watching you videos. Thanks for a great job.
Wow very nice boats in this episod =)
Hi ,THIRTEEN more possible leaks on that very nice yacht,
So you Seattle down for the winter... 🤔😜 I recognize the unpleasant feeling with water dripping down into the bed. Hope you find were the water is getting in. An economy pack with Sikaflex might be helpful...?
