I have one of the Acoustic 700 and am glad I was able to find one. I have several Variax's. A 600, 3 JTVs (59 and 2- 69s) and find myself gravitating to the Acoustic 700 rather than any other for my Electric Acoustic sounds. It plays and sounds fantastic and I wish that L6 would re-introduce it with the updated JTV type interface so that I can run it more compatibly with a Helix and Workbench HD. The model integration with presets on the Helix takes some screwing around to figure out as you can't use the interface of the Helix (VDI input) straight up with it and only the old versions of Workbench will work with the Old (pre-JTV/Standard) Variax's. Wish L6 would fix that!! Lots of 5-6-and 700s out there languishing in their cases!!

Hi. Great comment. I tried one of these in a guitar shop yesterday [unplugged]. It had a very playable neck, but the action on the treble side was a bit low and 'rattly' which put me off a bit. Is there any way of adjusting/raising the string height/action etc. I noticed 2 small screw holes on the tailpiece that didn't seem to have any obvious function.

@@MrMjp58 The two Allen set screws next to the bridge are to raise and lower the entire bridge. I know I'm a year late but I still love the damn thing!! Wish I could find the one that L6 built for James Taylor. That must be amazing. Still wish L6 would integrate the old Variax's into a usable Workshop Software Update. I have it plugged into my Helix's and the Acoustic 700 thinks it's a Lester when set to Drednaugt and a Tele on some of the other models.

@@lonnyhorowitzmd509 Thanks a lot. When I went back to the shop to re-check it, it had been sold. It really had a fantastic neck and I loved trying it out; it was the only one I've ever come across.
I have owned a Variax 700 electric [2007 vintage], which has developed some disturbing faults over the years. The battery pack burnt out, there is a constant gurgling noise through the power pack, the low E is now half the volume of the other strings and the tremolo arm is completely loose and seems un-mendable.
In many ways, it's a really nice instrument - build-wise. I still like it and play it a lot despite all the above.

You can get piezo replacements for the Older Variax’s. I saw some on Ebay recently and purchased two for the JTVs from “Full Compass” and got them last week, Someone on Ebay has complete bridges for the 600 also, I think they are worth keeping operational. The Korean and Japanese built instruments are great guitars. Certainty as good as any currently being built today. I think replacing the piezo that is giving you a low output would probably fix the problem. I don’t know about the humming issue. Fortunately I haven;t developed that and don’t use battery’s to power my guitars as they are powered either by my Helix or in the past with a POD 500HX via the VDI input. I hope this method will continue to work.

    wow Ibis sounds bitter...I have 2 variax's - would love a 700 - I have few issues w/mine, nothing a tech can't handle - I DO agree on design (pickguard on 69's 4 example...yuck) but I love the sounds I'm achieving

Fact: James Tyler Variaxes sucks a lot. I hate their design, for example. They are most intended or "heavy metal gear addicted" people, not for common players. If you are not a fan of rock and roll or hard rock forget the new Variaxes.
Another question: why they discontinued the accoustic and bass Variaxes if James Tyler is so good to design guitars? Perhaps is because he is not so good at all. My apologizes for the people who spent money on new Variaxes, but the old generation is far better than the actual models, including the Pods. Thats my opinion.

Newer pods take alot to get used to
(seems no one at line 6 knows how to make a single good patch/tone)
I disagree about the JTV Variax, better modelling and processing and gutiars great on its own.
Theres a vid on youtube showing difference in sound and tracking compared to old variaxes

Troll. There are LP-style, Strat-style and metal/shredder style models available. I don't play much metal, but found that I liked the JTV-89F best (the most shredder-oriented model). I can crank up a jazzbox or even a really good acoustic (or acoustic 12-string) model on that thing. I miss the acoustic and bass versions, but I've hunted down used variants of the originals. I do have an Electric 500 (original Variax) version, but I don't think it's as good as the JTV 89F at all.
