These aliens dont get us humans, we are willing to die for our pets, a child thats not ours, or an ally on the battlefield. Its all the same to us. While we celebrate the winners, we also celebrate the ones who show exceptional sportsmanship. We celebrate the weak who push themselves to higher levels. We celebrate pacifist as well as the warrior.
My granduncle was in the 2ND WORLD War towards the end. He was always telling us kids what it was like seeing his friends and family members die in front of him and could not do anything as he has to survive himself to support his unit. He always had tears in his eyes when telling us. It always makes us kids realize that we were lucky to be alive due to those who sacrificed themselves for the feature generations freedom and a lesson to be learnt to treasure humanity and all living things. Thank you for the reminder of who and what we are no matter what.
Dang. Very few WW2 soldiers will talk openly about the specifics of combat. Those are lessons few will survive learning, and fewer still will pass on to us youngsters. When they were young men, they were doing straight-up heroic shit. And when they’re old men, they’re just “grandpa being silly”. My maternal grandfather was on a bomber crew. I want to say he was the navigator, but I’m not 100% with that. But he was stationed in Panama, doing fly-overs of the ocean, looking for subs. I don’t think he saw much action. He lived just long enough to see his first grandson. My paternal grandfather was medically barred for enlisting, so he helped build ships. But the few stories we did hear… the French resistance managed to empty all the works of art from the Louvre, and spread them all over the country. Civilians, even. That’s not even gangster shit… more like ninja shit. One of the main ways into Switzerland (which remained neutral) was through Geneva. Kind of a narrow valley, but the part in the middle is flat enough to drive on. The Swiss had…. not even sure what to call them. Concrete bunkers, but they had battleship-grade guns on them. And then they painted them so they just look like houses. Anyway, whatever your great uncle shared, cherish that. Almost all that we know is from official reports. Stuff you’d show on a map, with arrows pointing this way or that. Except for the Jews. The shit they lived through…I don’t know if I could remain sane after that. There was a movie, the Grey Zone… since the bad guys were enslaving the Jews first, they got used for lots of wartime labor. So, like, the women’s camp at Auschwitz was used to make bullets. And whenever somebody died, they’d hide gunpowder on the body, knowing that other enslaved Jews would receive the dead, so they could cremate them. A lot of people had to die before they had enough ammo to do the coup. Like… psychologically… there’s a difference between doing something that risks your life, vs. knowing 100% that for the plan to succeed, you yourself must die. There was a squad of Jewish prisoners whose job was to lie to the newly arrived prisoners, and tell them to go into the “de-lousing” room… where be gassed. The same group then got to loot the bodies and haul them to the crematorium. For doing this, they lived a little longer, so when all the pieces were in place the coup would happen. I don’t know that I could do that… trick your own people into dying, so that in a few months you can execute the plan. And the plan was to destroy the crematorium. They all assumed they’d be captured and killed afterwards. But without the crematorium, there were bodies. So when the war was over, and somebody FOUND the bodies, the world would know what happened. Literally thousands of people HAD to die for the plan to work. Like… not “we’ll be executed, but it’ll be too late to stop the stop the plan. Nah, thousands of Jews dying was the middle of the plan. Their deaths helped hide what was really happening. I can’t even imagine living in a scenario where THAT was the sane and rational response.

It is said that the reason mammals are so dominant is… maternal instinct. You can’t prey on the infants, because there’s always a fully grown adult or three ready and willing to die gloriously to protect them. More mammals make it to adulthood. Many species of mammel take that a step farther: pack bonding. A grizzly would easily take down a wolf… but 15 wolves is a different story. You sometimes get party death that way, but if anyone engages the pack, the whole pack fights back. The existence of the pack makes EVERYONE in it stronger. And if you look at humans… our pack bonding works with anybody, because it’s cheaper to repair a pack member, than it is to make one and train it back up. Even an allied species benefits from us saving their soldiers, which benefits us. But all of that is conscious decisions by a leader. With humans, we just instinctively know to protect EVERY member of the pack, and evacuate to safety. Loyalty is just… this cold calculus of war, but way faster. No thinking about it, no delays to do the math, just… see injured packmate, “How can I help?” And if it’s a child… even the monsters quickly figure out that messing with kids will summon a group of armed and armored humans who have stopped caring if they die in this fight. If you look at one instance of it, that’s a stupid response by the humans. But repeat it a few times, and many enemies will avoid human kids entirely, because humans do not practice “‘proportional response “. It’s why killer bees are effective… kill one drone, and soon enough, the whole hive will show up and attack. We are the honey badgers of the galaxy.
