That small antenna connector on the portale TV set is the same as an audio jack, where the left channel (the tip of the connector) is the rf signal, and the ground is the same as in audio jacks. Knowing that makes it very simple to build an adaptor.
@@ArnoLouwagie It is also a good idea to connect to ground all the remaining pins (mono jack connectors are usually used for this purpose) to make sure all the contacts on the plug surround the rf signal, therefore they act as electromagnetic shielding.
Thanks! You gave me the most informative way to hook up my old tv. I already had an rf modulator to play videogames and could hook up vcr/dvd. This provides the missing link for me. Appreciation.
Thank you for the video! I've got a small analog tv that works fine but i was going insane on how to make it work. Now at least I know what is supposed to work, because i'm sure some of my equipment is faulty. Great channel!!

You can also use HDMI to SDI Micro Converter, from HDMI Cable to Coaxial cable. Make sure to have your TV to channel 3 or 4 like the old days when you hooked your cable box to your analog TV. I have two vcr/DVD combo players: vcr/DVD with antenna in and antenna out and vcr/DVD with no tuners. I hooked my Cox cable out to the antenna in to my vcr model SV2000WV806. Then I used the other coax cable from the antenna out of the vcr model SV2000WV806 to the antenna on my TV. Then I used the same cox cable box hook rca(av)(red, white, and yellow)cable from Cox cable rca output to Funai DV220FX4 rca input. Then I used the Funai DV220FX4 rca output to the rca input on my TV. I hooked both my vcr/DVD players and Cox cable box to the same TV in my room. For my other tvs in the media room and the living I just used HDMI Cable from my cable box. Now I no longer have cable cable TV service, but I still used Cox Internet and Cox phone service since I used the firestick on all my TV. If I had known about HDMI to RCA(SV) and HDMI to SDI, then I would have diss the TV service part from Cox cable a long time ago. You did a great job explaining the conversion.
I still have an old retro Sony 21-inch I use to play my old retro consoles on that I bought new. It had an RG6 F type jack years before Zenith or other American brands offered them. And it was proudly made in Japan and heavy as crap. LOL No component has failed and I have only had to make color adjustments on a component level 3 times. It literally takes 5 minutes to warm up and being an early solid-state component TV, it still used vacuum tubes in the power step-up circuits in the amplifier for the Dolby surround sound. I also refurbish and restore old vacuum tube transceivers.
In the early OOs I had a flat screen CRT TV... I want to say 46” (4:3 aspect ratio) and a 14” iBook G4 with an S-Video dongle. The TV had an S-Video in port. It would blow people away when they saw my iBook’s Mac OS X desktop on my TV 😂
Tears of nostalgic joy from the ps1 part 😁 Very fun video to watch,i had lots of e-scrap in my hands through my childhood but due to not knowing electronics i dumped them away. That tv looks so beautiful despite its age! Also in the movie part you reminded me how id sit and watch Lara Croft with my siblings Good job bud 👍
Love this. Your video was really helpful for my needs, and the visuals were perfect. I eventually found a nice HDMI to RF modulator and a low power RF amplifier, which I was able to broadcast my signal over the air on VHF channel 6. I can now use the antennas for my old TV. Best part is that any radio which can pick up the sound on 87.75FM will also be able to capture the audio lol
Let me know when you figure out how to make it in the proper 4:3 aspect. I’ve done this many times and just can’t stand the improper squashed aspect. They’re intended for widescreen, so it’s squashed, even if it’s a 4:3 video, it will still have black bars on the side, in a slightly squashed aspect. Can’t deal!
You can still buy CRT TVs apparently new too but I haven't seen any sources. I prefer regular TV than Smart TVs they're all scams based on how expensive they're getting. If stores don't bring this stuff back I give up on everything.
My old PC had a Yellow video output. My TV was just COAX. In similar fashion, I ran the cable to the input of my VCR which was hooked up to the TV. Yeah, it worked. But no, was not good for much other than the coolness factor of having done it back in the day.
I had a old VCR kicking around that I hooked a handheld emulation device up to through one of the cheap hdmi to composite connectors. The VCR then goes to a 13 inch sharp tv that only accepts RF, so that works out great. I also bought a hdmi to rf modulator, but the quality is actually better running through the VCR with the cheapo connector. Less scanline crawling and less blurry surprisingly. Thought he RF modulator has the bonus of being able to adjust the aspect ratio yourself rather than relying on zoom and so such, so you get rid of black bars. I'm sure there is better ways to do all this, but this is how I do it lol.
You can use stereo bud even if tv is mono because the rf modulator would have a stereo to mono converter build in if the tv is mono it with mix left and right into one speaker if the tv is stereo it will be stereo as normal broadcast back in the day use and special stereo system to allow stereo music be played on a mono tv even fm radio used the same system for stereo music played on mono radio the two channels get mixed so you hear the full stereo track in mono
I just love that Philips, I would like to someday own tv from the early 1980s. Btw how is the quality on these hdmi to av converters, like is the image sharp and is the small text like on youtube comments easy to read?
It depends on the screen! If you hook this up to something like a computer monitor from the 80s (the ones that could handle 80 columns), it’s possible that you’ll be able to read the text. However, most CRT TVs from this time period don’t have nearly as much detail as CRT computer monitors and you won’t be able to read any fine text. Subtitles? Yes. RUclips logo on the website? Yes. Video titles? Yes. description, comments, etc? Not a chance.
I’ve used the rf modulator on my black and white old tv as instructed, sound came out really clear however the image didnt come out, it was only the flickr. If anyone knows the solution, i’d really appreciate it
There are rf modulaters that accept HDMI input so you don't need the HDMI to AV converter. This also gets better picture quality since when you convert HDMI to AV you are converting 1080 to 520.
Hi, about the tv playing a screensaver or something, how do u do that wihout using a laptop, is there any kind of pendrive for SCART????? love the video thanks
Something to think about, even though you were only broadcasting a very low power signal, that could be illegal, at least it is here in North America. (Canada)
I am trying to put a raspberry pi into one of those 5 inch tvs. I actually made my own antenna plug from an audio cable. I just had to split a coaxial and an aux cable and solder the center of the coaxial to the wire corresponding to the last ring on the aux cable and then also you need to solder the outer grounds together and then mine worked. it looks suuuper janky but I couldnt find anything online similar to the cable io needed
One issue: Aspect ratio. It seems like something is squashing 16:9 content to 4:3 on the RUclips, causing everything to look tall and skinny. If possible, tell your RUclips box that you have a 4:3 screen connected, that should fix it by either becoming proper 4:3 or letterboxed. Unfortunately not all modern devices have this option, but worth a try.
@@ArnoLouwagie I'm doing something similar with a Roku RUclips dongle, I output it to analogue. It has no 4:3 option, so connecting it to a 4:3 TV results in squashing. I'm using it with a wide-screen tv, and for analogue recording. When I have a video from RUclips in 4:3 that I'm really keen on watching on a 4:3 screen, I save it and cut off the black sides if there are any, and then output it through a different device that can play mp4 to analogue out. I have a digital set top box and an older bluray player that can play mp4 and have analogue outputs, it works on either. If any of those players could do RUclips I'd be all set, but they don't do I use this detour.
The only downside to CRT TV's is that they emitted more harmful EMF radiation than flat screen, yet still less EMF radiation than any wifi TV. Also CRT is less harmful to eyes & skin than a LED or fluorescent backlit screen. You can shield the inside of the CRT with shielding tape or aluminum screen to keep the electromagnetic radiation from leaking out. I like CRT, I used to repair the old tube type TV's back in the day, new flatscreen TV's are throw away TV's because they are designed to break & not be repairable, just like a light bulb the electronic companies use obsolescence to profit. A good way to clean old circuit boards is to stick them in a dishwasher.
It’s awesome. I had a lot of fun doing this. Just watch out for how strong your setup is/how strong the signal you’re sending out is. Usually, it’s illegal to send out a semi- strong analog signal. It all depends on your local laws. So keep it LOW power and check your local laws. Have fun! ;)
No delay, it’s an analog signal ;) And if you were to spot some delay, that would be coming from the HDMI device/the only digital device in the entire setup.

It’s normal to be able to pick up something on both channel 3 and 4 (even if you only pick VHF 4 for instance). You probably just have to adjust the signal on 3 or 4 to get both audio and video.

No. I tested the difference of lag between native analog VGA and digital (HDMI, DP...) to VGA adapter for CRT monitor-PC and... I get no any difference while the mouse cursor is moving. 🙂
By biggest complaint is that nothing available today accounts for overscan without doing really deep diving and juat about hacking your pc to force it to have margins on the screen.
I always found it strange that outside the U.S., CRT TVs had the rim of the tube exposed, unlike North America with the rim protected by a plastic bezel
That picture quality looks SHOCKINGLY GOOD... One of the benefits of RF is that it can provide near-infinite bandwidth. BTW, you look very handsome on TV!!! 😁
I also use a Thinkpad Edge even tho I'm not a student, I just got many of them for free at work. I actually like it, though. Basically a ThinkPad that's designed in China. One time I jammed an NVME into the M.2 slot and destroyed the wifi capabilities of the system and have to patch the kernel in linux to use a USB one. Good times, It's more fun this way.
Heres a little known secret, Philips, Toshiba and Onwa made the best crt's out of them all, they were the three best manufacturers, even beating trinitron
We recommend you change the CRT display from "TV" to any "monitor-PC" (14" or 15" or 17" or...) get much, much, much better focus. We get very weak focus on any CRT TV.
I have a very good 21’’ CRT Apple Studio Display that obviously has a much better picture. Didn’t use it for this video because high resolutions and clean images aren’t the point of this video. I’m just trying to show people how to hook up an old/vintage TV to modern devices for multiple purposes (nostalgia, artpiece, interest, feelings, design, playing certain films and games from that time period, etc…).

bro, this is dam cool =w=
believe it or not I have one of these adapters somewhere and gun fact: HDMI actually provides a small amount of power so the adapter can be powered entirley from hdmi.
Depends on what it’s hooked up to. Sometimes it works with only HDMI, sometimes you need additional power.
can someone help me out? i have this same set up for my tv but for some reason i get video on channel 3 and my audio on channel 4 does anyone know why im having this isssue
It’s normal to be able to pick up something on both channel 3 and 4 (even if you only pick VHF 4 for instance). You probably just have to adjust the signal on 3 or 4 to get both audio and video.

I have 2 digital compact camcorders a FHD one and 4K one and 2 full HD LCD TV i dont use CRT TV
I use both.
is there much lag?
No. I tested the difference of lag between native analog VGA and digital (HDMI, DP...) to VGA adapter for CRT monitor-PC and... I get no any difference while the mouse cursor is moving. 🙂
Nothing
Great Video :)
Glad you enjoyed! :-)
i need a rf to hdmi or rca for my atari 7800. not a hdmi to rf
Yeah sounds about right. I don’t like playing old games on a newer tv though…
By biggest complaint is that nothing available today accounts for overscan without doing really deep diving and juat about hacking your pc to force it to have margins on the screen.
Do you know how to stream from from a old tv
To or from? If you’re asking me how to stream to an old tv, just hook a Google chromecast up to it. Watch the video.
@@ArnoLouwagie yes I want to play from a Xbox 360 and a old TV while streaming on RUclips and kick
I always found it strange that outside the U.S., CRT TVs had the rim of the tube exposed, unlike North America with the rim protected by a plastic bezel
Your the best
Thank you!
That picture quality looks SHOCKINGLY GOOD... One of the benefits of RF is that it can provide near-infinite bandwidth. BTW, you look very handsome on TV!!! 😁
Yep I didn’t expect it to look so clear either haha. And thank you! :)
this method is the best to play arcade games with a tv box with emuelec.
Cool.
16:10 wow 5 CPUs, that thing must run hot! 😲
/s 😂
I also use a Thinkpad Edge even tho I'm not a student, I just got many of them for free at work. I actually like it, though. Basically a ThinkPad that's designed in China.
One time I jammed an NVME into the M.2 slot and destroyed the wifi capabilities of the system and have to patch the kernel in linux to use a USB one. Good times, It's more fun this way.
Hahahahaha
I must admit they're fun machines to mess around with
I like CRTS
AWESOME!!!💢💢💢💢💢💢💢💢💢💢
The picture quality was better on tube tellys than flat screen tellys.
any particular reason why you put every amd/intel/windows sticker you could find on your "school laptop" ? lol
I used this thing back in high school and I would put random intel/amd/windows stickers on it when I was bored in class lol.
Neat. Thanks
Bruh I connected it (without the use of the modulator) and there is no signal. Any tips on this?
P.S: I only have an American tv
How did you hook it up EXACTLY?
Heres a little known secret, Philips, Toshiba and Onwa made the best crt's out of them all, they were the three best manufacturers, even beating trinitron
Not sure about Toshiba and Onwa but yeah Philips made some amazing CRT monitors.
@@ArnoLouwagie The number 1 spot for crt monitors goes to EIZO they were just awesome
I was born in 1985 and I'd use this
We recommend you change the CRT display from "TV" to any "monitor-PC" (14" or 15" or 17" or...) get much, much, much better focus.
@@ArnoLouwagie ok. I have CRT monitor-computer Sony Multiscan E530 21". 😍😁🥰
I unlike so any CRT TV for crap. But I like so any CRT monitor-computer (your apple studio) and monitor for studio-multimedia. 😉
I can't think of any person in the wright mind, who want to go back to watch on old tv, instead of watching on 4K screen.
cool
wow I've never had an s channel knob
I still use a crt tv every day and I'm 9 years old
Awesome! They're great for things like watching old movies or playing old games. They aren't always great at doing or displaying new stuff though :-).
I also have an analog television.
Nice. I really like your reasonable point about CRT, but the thing you said indicates that there are many TV streaming services around, like Netflix, there is no need for analog over-the-air TV anymore.
Cool vid
You’re Western European right? I think I can hear it in your accent. You speak English rather well!
Thank you!!
And yeah, I’m Belgian.
They're not at all unusable especially with digital tuners.
RF is based
