    Another useful tip in sexing adult rams is that generally the blue-tinted scales that catch the light go all the way through the prominent black dot on the side of the female, whereas the male will have a solid black dot without any reflective scales going through it.

    Rachel, thanks for spotlighting the Rams. I doubt you would remember, but we talked in the comments about 6 months ago about Rams, and you had said you usually don't keep them. They are one of my favorite fish. I used to have an Orinoco biotope with Rams and Discus that was my best tank. Thanks for all of your videos, I'm your 86th subscriber.

    This has always been one of my absolute favorite fish. They're amazing - AND for a cichlid they go really well with community fish like guppy, molly, angels, tetras, etc. You just have to consider that these occupy the bottom and mid section of the tank, so if you get community fish like guppies and mollies that are near the surface, they go fine together. They also go together with Palette cichlids (Krimbensis).
    Sexing these is easy when they're grown. The males always have 2-3 longer fin fibers at the start of the dorsal fin.

    Thanks Rachel for this video! :))) I love Rams, they're my favourite fish. Intelligent creatures, they make a real contact with the owner and you can really earn their trust (my Ramirezi female doesn't escape my hand when I do maintenance in the aquarium, and swims fast towards me when I'm coming near the tank, as if to greet me). My observation is that they love plants, they often swim between the leaves/stalks of Limnophila or Echinodorus as if it was a pleasure for them.

      It's insane that we breed debilitating traits and deformities into animals because we think it's pretty or cute. Dogs are a great example. Dwarfism, brachycephaly, excess skin, massive ears-the more features are exaggerated, the more we love and reward them. But exaggerated features lead to severe health problems. I mean, when a dog can only give birth by C-section doesn't that tell you something's not okay? Don't get me wrong: I love bulldogs, shar peis, dachshunds, etc. But I think that's because they're so normalized that we don't even realize we *chose* to make them look that way. You think about what it would be like if people were bred that way. It'd be a freak show; we'd rightly be horrified and incensed. But we've fetishized specific "styles" of domesticated animals to such an extent that the look is more important to us than their wellbeing.
      /rant

    • @Moss_Hill
      @Moss_Hill 7 лет назад +1

      Sailor Steve Holt! That's a really good rant. That's why mutts or hybrids are best as long as the lines are NOT bred down too long. We have a Boxador and Shepweiler (just like they sound). Pound puppy rescues and 0 health problems in 10 years! They still look and act young. Many large purebreds live only 7 years and go blind, die of cancer, ect. Now that people have cute little names for hybrids they are breeding them out....ugh!
      Back to fish...haha. I rescued a parrot fish with ich in a 10gal. He was not deformed like all the ones I'm seeing now. They come from Japan and have to be ordered in bulk so they sit in the store and die. So sad!
      rant matched😁

    PS- what are round, white, hard cluster of dots that are covering all 4 sides of my tank? I did a 50 % Change Monday and another yesterday at about 60%. I grabbed my net. Ran a hard sponge down the walls and into the net. Dipped the net in Scalding hot water, then went right back at the next swipe. Took me ALL DAY, but I dont mind. L.O.V.E my fish!!

    GBR's are probably my favorite fish. If you keep them in a community tank, they develop a lot of personality. I have two right now with neons and cories, and they are actually very outgoing. They will take food from my hand and follow my finger around on the glass! Plus their coloration is just fantastic. I know I'll get some flack for saying this...but I actually think they are overall prettier than apistos...

    2) Starting a new tank, its cycled and want to start with something other than the rams....would Endlers be ok to start off with? I'm also planning on 10 rummynoae but the LFS suggested I not start with those.

    I bought two Bolivian rams for a 40 breeder that I set up just for them. They were kind of dull when purchased but have colored up nicely after a week of being in their new home. I've noticed differences between the two like size. One is larger then the other. Their coloration is different also. One has more darker more pronounced lines throughout its body. The other has more gold on the belly although both have some. Their fins are different also. One has long trailer off its tail while the other doesn’t. I would like to breed them in this aquarium and was wondering if I should wait and see if the two that I have are male and female or pick up another two in order to up my chances of having a breeding pair?

    I have a 15 gallon aquarium that I plan to keep some African Dwarf Frogs in. I want to do a community tank. My tank is low-moderate lighting and lowly planted (just some s. Repens and wisteria). If I put a canister filter that does 265 gph and HOB filter on a 29 gallon tank and a jet system under the substrate and plant live plants in the tank, would this be enough filtration for German Blue Rams? Also, could I have rock Kribensis and Apistogramma caucatuoides as tank mates and breed all three? If so, how many of each type of fish should I get to ensure they pair off and would I have enough room to also add other fish like neons or tetras or danios or guppies?

    Hi Rachel! I got a couple of rams to try to control the guppy population I have (I would like to have some fish that takes some or most of the fry so I don't have that much and I can better control my tank balance). Do you have any experience or recommendation on the matter? I've tried with my local store, but the lady there simply told me "anyone will do it". I need some more clue because I don't agree with her, and my rams are the example: they take only a few of them from time to time. Love your videos, long term fan here :)

    • @RachelOLeary

      growth depends on temperature and diet. There is not a set formula. With aeration, they would probably be ok in 90, 86 is considered the top of their formal comfort zone.

    I have been binge watching your channel for hours. Love the way you explain everything! Great job. As for the rams, they're my absolute favorite fish, but I've never had luck with them. No local fish store and the large chain pet stores are hours away and have the worst tanks imaginable. I've bought from them and they usually don't last a week. Do you selll these fish online, or are they just for local customers. Thanks again!

      Rachel O'leary how do you think the rams would do in a shipping container. I'm in Southern Virginia and I'm really interested. Thanks for the reply!

    QUESTION: I have a breeding pair of Rams that I have put in a breeding tank at 83 degrees. When they lay their eggs, hatch them out, can I leave the adults in with the babies? This pair are proven parents in a community tank already, but slowly the other fish pick off the fry. I hope moving the pare will help them be successful.

      I have poor luck leaving adults in with fry but your experience may differ. The fish don't read the books

    German Blue Rams are absolutely stunning fish. Unfortunately I've never had success keeping them. Each time I've bought a group of them, they die after 5 days. :(

    Will German Blue Rams be suitable for my tank?

    Awesome video Rachel! Can anyone recommend a good combination of nano fish for a 5-gallon freshwater tank? I'm gonna cycle the tank for a couple of weeks before introducing any of them, so no rush! I just want the right balance for a 5 gallon tank :)

      I would be more tempedt o pick one type of fish so that you could have an adequate group then trying to do a community.

      Thanks for the reply Rachel! Would it be too much to add a red cherry shrimp or ghost shrimp to a small group of zebra danios or rasbora?

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  7 лет назад

      I would probably pick a dwarf rasbora (chili, exclamation point/strawberry, etc) over zebra danios. Danios like more swimming space. You could add a small colony of shrimp as well. I would choose cherries over ghost anyday.

      I have a 55 gallon aquarium with plenty of live plants and java moss with a colony of rainbow tiger Endlers with about 8 Cory cats and 6 Otocinclus cats and I have been thinking of adding some Rams in the mix because my water is usually at 80 degrees to 82 degrees
