- It's easy to see why there is such confusion with this. Ed played the Bb live, but he played the A in the original recording (Second Helping). I prove it in this video.
HUGE Thank You to Hughes Guitars for letting me use their new CEM-5s prototype! I GOTTA get me one of these!!

You are the man Scott! I had learned it off the album back in the day and have always played it with the ‘A’ to ‘B’ and I knew you were correct to the original recording. What’s sad is that now that people have so many more resources they live to jump on folks over the tiny details even though you haves played countless live shows of these songs and even played with Skynyrd members. The original players weren’t even as nit-picky as some of the internet geniuses of today. Good on you sir!!
Scott you are fantastic and probably the best connection to Ed King we have...thanks for your attitude and information on guitar and music 👍🏻
Thank you for your support! 🙏🏼
Scott thank you for this 👍🏼
Years ago I remember seeing Ed King playing this with Marty Schwartz , & he had his take on how he originally had played this iconic riff . I believe he said he slid into his note as was done originally & also if I’m not mistaken said it could be played either way as you just demonstrated & would still work , and 90 % of people wouldn’t notice at all . Thanks for breaking this one down again as a refresher course . 😎👍
We old-school players already know its both ways depending on how you feel...PERIOD! Its a shame some need a claim to fame over one note! lol
Scott I am so happy I found your channel. I am a 69 year old that has started learning the guitar. All my life I wanted to but had to take care of family and 8yrs of that was servicing my country in the army. You make everything so clear and I understand what you are show us. Keep up the great job you doing.
Thank you for your service!
I hear A to B definitely 😊
Thanks for clearing that up Scott! I learned it from the record as A to B, but then saw Ed saying B flat so I changed the way I played it. But it was a lot of years between when he recorded it and when he made the RUclips videos. I find the same about the solo - I hear it differently than what Ed says on his videos.
I did the same thing. Learned it by ear from the album and then changed to playing the Bb when I saw Ed playing it live.
This video clears up a lot of confusion for me.
Great explanation, thanks brother
Thanks for taking the time to dissect the riff Scott!!! Like you, learned it on a record player, always an AB guy but do mix it up!
We had a needle and a record, and we got really good at lifting and hitting the right groove to replay it. Great stuff as usual.
also wore out the rewind and play buttons on the casette player hahaha that's what I tell my grandkids-
@@MarksMusic123 We wore grooves in our pencils rewinding cassettes.
@@zublacus no kidding!!! the only way to get that tape back where it belonged too hahaha!
Does anyone not change up licks after playing a song 200+ times ? If i am remembering the interview with Cooper he said Ronnie called and said he had a new song and wanted to get in on tape asap before it changed or lost it edge. Cooper booked them right into Atlanta and they cut sweet home alabama. Love what you do for everybody Scott.
You're right, ain't nobody gonna know the difference. Keep these great videos coming. Been a die hard Skynyrd fan since I was ten in 1977.
Glad to you back posting much need LS how to vids!!
Great video Scott! Ed sounded like he would change it up throughout the song. Like he plays it three or more different ways on Second Helping little things makin it more interesting. But I heard that Bb somewhere, maybe live versions somewhere. Thanks for takin the time puttin this together and keepin Eds' playin alive
Thank you so much for finally clearing this up, much appreciated!!
Ed Talked about this and he wrote it with the B flat. But you point is spot on. Play it the way your want, ie, listent to the way Stephen Stills now sings For What it's Worth. He said he the origininal was not the take he wanted.
Thank you, Scott! I asked Jerry a couple weeks ago and he said A to B. That’s the way McTaggert taught me as well. I benefit greatly by your work. And Randy makes an awesome guitar!! He and I went school together! Again thanks!
I'm so glad you covered this because I thought I was the only one in the world who never heard that b flat on second helping!
Yep. Cause it’s not there 😂
hard to get either....fast....so I just make it sound good.....make the people happy is my goal.....tks for your videos Sensei!
I'm SO happy to see your videos comin'
Thanks Scott, love your videos. They make me a better player.
Awesome! Thank you for your support!
No denying that "A" note!.., and I've played it both ways though out the years.., Now if I can only nail down Ed's freakin! main solo!
Ed was a beast!
He sure was! @@seraines
agreed ive always played it in a and like you i learned it off the record
Learned songs by spinnin records back in the 70s just like you. You had to have a good turntable with a pitch control get it perfect pitch with your guitar. Anyway, Of course you're right a deaf man could hear that. Like your video lessons. Met you at the Monongahela gig.
Thats a sweet strat, been trying to figure out who made it!
I just found your channel. I, like you, would spend hours trying to figure out what was being played. Saw many a band live. They seldom played to the recorded note for note. They played how they felt that night. I'm gonna learn a lot from you. Thank you, Sir, for this channel!
Another great video! Any chance of one for the solo on Every Mother's Son? You mentioned it in the video a couple of years ago if there was interest. 🙂 I'm interested!
As “Always” I love to see your RUclips Tutorials.
I adore Skynyrd & have learnt “So Much” from your clips.
Will forever be indebted to you Scott.
Still mastering Swamp Music but how good is that to play when you get better at it.
Love it!!!
Thank you! 🙏🏼
Regarding your guitar….
It’s absolutely Stunning.
I watched the “Hughes Guitars” clip on RUclips.
Absolutely beautiful.
Thanks as always Scott!
Ps….
Will APB “Pleaseeeeee” come to the UK!!🇬🇧
Thank you for your support, David! 🙏🏼
I knew my ears hadn't deceived me. Thank you! Subscribed!
A to B is what I hear , when you play the A against the B flat you can hear the dissonance but yeah it can be played either way, both work and it's all good, Rock On Scott !!!
Thanks Scott...great breakdown!
Thanks! Amazing that we pickers are still fiddling about with that intro after all these years!
Marty music did an interview with Ed a while back and he said he used B-Flat . Another interview he played what Gary was playing when he came to practice and came up with that riff. Thanks Stev.... Scott Gain... Raines so close!
Scott, anyone who tries to correct your Lynyrd Skynyrd or any other musical instructional videos you have produced are full of *&%$. You make the most accurate instructional videos period.
Thank you for your support! 🙏🏼
I loaded the studio version into my cubase and pulled it into vari-audio tuning(their version of Pro Tools melodyne) and it comes up up as A to B. Digital has no bone to pick...it just reads the notes 👍
Truth
Scotty...no matter this is in controversy....I personally like the the A best but that's the way I taught myself. I like the hammer on better than the slide. Don't really care what anyone else thinks....hehe Probably the most iconic lick ever. There actually is a clip on youtube that Ed plays it with the Bb...so? I like it with the A and I'm stickin to it! Rock on bro
🤘😝🤘Scott you rock my man. The Scott way is the right way, in Scott we trust. When you learn from Ed King you definitely know the correct way.
i always played the Bb in the intro and the A going into the chorus
Either works 👍🏼
My ears won’t let me play the Bb after hearing the original recording for so long.
@@seraines same here Scott... Been playing it the studio way since the summer of '74 .
Hey Scott I made the comments before watching the whole video and of course you are 100% correct. When I learned the riff I played using the A but it never sounded right to me.
Hello from (Southern)Germany. Funny, two weeks ago I did the same thing as you on timecode 5:40, to find out what's the right note on the original record🙂
Thank you Scott. This has been a conundrum for me for years. I prefer the B♭ version in that it sounds a little warmer.
Yep I thought the A right away too. Sounds better to me.. sharper hook. Another question is whether it was played 1/2 step down tuning.
And like another comment below, I could see both being played in the song, depending where it's at.
Waste of time! They both work so why bother with the complainers??! Hats off to you Scott for even
Doing this! Play on!
You just don’t know how long i wanted this answer 🤣🤣🤣so one of life’s mysteries is now solved for me 👍👍 I used to go stand on the exact original Hell House location where that song was born and ask the heavens above to reveal the exact progression to me but it never was clear 🤣🤣 and thats a true story .
😂
Scott I really enjoy learning from you.
Thank you for watching!
Hey Tim thanks for the audio comparison of the two different notes. Which one is correct. The truth is, they are both correct! They both sound great. I'll bet Ed wasn't sure which to use in recoding the song, maybe later decided he liked the Bb live. He liked both I guess that makes them both perfect. 😎 Thanks Tim!
That would be my guess .. At some point he decided the Bb was a bit more artistic but there's no doubt as to which note he played on the album... It's an A..
Exactly!
Obviously it's A to B!
You got to understand, all the guitar beginner “know it all’s” will complain about EVERYTHING!!
That's a great looking and sounding guitar. Like to have one of those myself. As far as the right/wrong note goes, I say play it the way you like to play it. The point is enjoying playing great songs, not nitpicking every little thing.
Amen brother!
Agreed!
It aint no fun if we're not havin fun!!! Scott we players appreciate you so soo much my brother 🙏
Man, I look up to you as such a great player..... You are.!
And people compliment me ,all the time --- I tell them no....Scott R. puts me to shame....
You inspire me man , to work Hard ..... & I'm a good player! Lol. ...Keep up the inspiring way... Thanks ------
We are all in our own journeys, brother. It’s good for us players to help and support each other.
@@seraines thanks for reply ....you are top tier , of all rock guitarists...And I mean ALL.. It's easy to play ones own songs , but I've always felt that doing covers , accurately, is truly the mark of a great musician.
You inspire us to work hard...thank you man.....👍🎼
I played with the needle and spoon. 😅
I never even knew there was a question that it wasn’t the A. My ears are getting rough. I used to hear a 1/4 tone real naturally. But lately I can struggle. I could easily hear the dissonance in your example! At least I can still hear that, thank you Jesus! Nice lesson man! Thanks
Keep picking out parts and working those ears 👍🏼
@@seraines Yes, thank you. ✌️
B according to Ed King with Marty Schwartz That video was made a year before Ed passed. Saw them in 73 when I was freshman in HS backing up for of all bands Black Sabbath! They blew Sabbath of the stage before they went on!
Ed plays the Bb on some vids (Winterland) as early as '75 .... That being said he played it A to B on the album. So that's where the confusion comes in.
I like sliding the b flat to the b. Thanks for breaking it down from your prospective Scott.
Works either way 👍🏼
Hey bud, just curious did Gainsy change it at all or did he play it like Allen played it after Ed. Which I belief was the way Ed put it down originally.
Can you did a video on your guitar specifically what you use live, do you play clean all the time?
If you're playing like it's played on the record, it can never be wrong. .
Funny I just seen another guy talk about that on his page. It showed Ed playing the song live and he showed Ed’s fingers moving from the B to A. I thought cool another way to play that lick. Doesn’t every player change their licks up a bit to add something different to the monotony of playing the same riffs day in and day out. lol. How many times have you heard Allen play Freebird a bit different live and Gary too on his licks? No one’s gonna pick that out playing live except the nerds that never play outside of their bedroom. 😂
Obvious to me to man!!! A! And takes alot of nerve for anyone to question you or try to call you out on something so trivial, the work you have put in to playing Skynyrd songs to play them ACCURATELY, ya the nerve of some people!! Sad. I've learned so much from you Scott and you are the man. Thank you for your dedication to continuing the Lynyrd Skynyrd legacy and sharing it with others, mad respect to you and APB!! Still following you man and can't wait to see you guys again!
1st one you played sounds more like the 8 track I played in my 67 mustang..seen them live few months before the crash…was a sad day for sure…just had gotten that smell on 8 track
I was mulling over this a few months ago! In studying all the footage I could find, it looked to me that Ed played the b flat on the intro riff, but plays the A when the rest of the band and vocals join through the end of the song. May have been because it was easier to play starting with the A for the rest of the band?...
Ed played it with a Bb live, but it’s an A on the original recording, per my demonstration. I’m an ear guy. As many times as my brain has heard the original recording, I have to play it with an A. Anything else doesn’t sound right to me.
@@seraines I 💯 agree with you. But you have to admit, it sure is fun to play it with that Bb. It has a groove that I simply enjoy.
If it works for you, do it 👍🏼
Ohh brother ....I can't believe people get bent out of shape over this when the guy who wrote it & recorded it didn't care about the "one note" because he played it both ways!!!
We call these people trolls because they'll argue over one damn note!!!
The fact you had to make this video is pretty sad and I think Ed is either getting a belly laugh or shaking his head in disbelief over this lol
Hi Scott ! Thank you so much for your video. I was wondering what you were using to separate the part and slow down the song ?
Again, thank you for what you're doing !
Moises to separate parts. There are several AI options out there. This is a pretty cool app. It works on your phone or browser.
Amazing Slow Downer for slowing it down without changing the key.
@@seraines Ok thanks man
Through the song i mix the A and the Bb.
Big hairy assed deal. Sounds fine either way.
Right?!
well, either way will work but Original recording is usually takes precedence. imo. thanks.
Do a video on L/S Preachers Daughter !
Lol 4:46 giving us the bird huh
Haha! That’s to the people that said I was playing the wrong note before. 😂
A
Yep 👍🏼
Of course any note you play can be right if you say so, the only question is what's on the recording, and it's NOT Bb.
Scott that was great. TY 👍🏼
Did ya taste some of Ed’s moonshine?
We didn’t. We had chocolate pie though!
