Man, this might be very simple for some people, but I know nothing about electricity. I've been watching many videos on installing a single pole switch, but your video is by far the best. Very simple and straight to the point. Great job! I wished I had watched your video first! It would have saved me a lot of time! Thanks a lot!
Till this day since I learned how to do this from this video, every time I install a switch, can’t help but think of “foo and no.” 😊. It’s like a cool mnemonic device.
I have 99 problems and a switch was one after a guy tried to charge me 60 bucks to put in a single pole dimmer and the guy lived around the corner and is just a handyman!!!!
Yes,this is the one I have been looking for! I forgot about the pigtailed white wires. Yeah, the ground wire in the light box... Excellent! Do some more, please. Thanks!
I'm just finding this in 2020 and MANNNNNNNNNNNNN you've made this real. This is eight years after your original post so I don't know if you're still in the game or even still alive but where ever you are THANK YOU!
I really liked this video and I want to thank the fellow in it for doing an outstanding job and being very informative. I also liked that he pointed out which color screw was for which wire. It is also important that when you do wiring yourself to have a good light source to be able to tell which screw is which. White wire goes to silver screw and black wire goes to as he said bronze or gold color screw. I also want to point out that he used the right tools for the job. The screwdriver he used if you had noticed had a protective plastic sleeve on it which is to prevent any unintentional grounding which could cause an arcing of electricity and also the wire strippers he used were good as well. One thing I have learned from my own experience over the past fifty years of doing things myself is that you can not be cheap with your tools and materials. And he had wired the switch and light the correct way, unlike my dad who had some how always managed to wire a light switch using both the white and black wires. Where in this video we see that only the black wires go from the light switch to the light. I don't exactly remember how my dad had done this but this was the way it was back in the fifties and why I will never know. Could help to explain why so many electrical fires happened back in them days before uniform building codes were put into place. Back in those days crews that built houses like the ones my dad built also did all the plumbing and electrical work as well. But I cannot stress enough how good and valuable it is to find a person as this man who had demonstrated that he is not an idiot and actually knew what he was talking about. This man whether he realizes it or not could actually have saved lives by showing the proper way to install an outlet. I know because a building that my dad had wired burned down two years ago from faulty wiring. And also use the proper wiring for the intended use. Don't be like my dad and use internal wiring for external or underground use.
You do a great job of explaining in a way we DIYers can understand. And the tiny mind-slips you apologized for made me feel better, knowing that even pros sometimes have to stop to get something they forgot. Great video. Thanks!
Saw quite a few videos but I found yours to be awesome with a very clean explanation . It was exactly what I have been looking for. There was no need to apologize . Your video was made in fine taste without all of the bull. Excellent, you have been a great help. Thank you
Good day my brother, I thank you for all your effort and patience you have to pass on all of us all this valuable information. As a DIY, I learn from all of you that make the time and give as the knowledge through all this vídeos. It is better to give them to receive. God bless you and your family and business.
My brother you are awesome. I thought I would have never been able to understand how to hook up a switch because I watched tons of videos to no avail, but you're the first person who actually make it make sense and I finally get it. Thanks brother you rock!
I need to rewire some switches since the last owner of the home only brought over the hot wire to the switch. This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you very much and keep up the great work.. you have a subscriber for life!
Great job! First video I’ve ever watched on electrical as I prepare myself for diy finished basement wiring. Very easy to understand and informational, thank you!
why is this not the first video that comes up good lord he made it easy to follow all the others i wanted to go ram my head into a wall after two minutes this i watched and went that's all he was just clear and did not mess around. Thank you who ever done this video it helped me alot.
Video was spot on brother. I needed to put a light inside my media closet. Everything from A to Z. Just finished about five minutes ago. Thanks so much!!
switch info good BUT, FIRST THING, you forgot to tell the amateurs to TURN OFF THE BREAKER going to the electric box BEFORE they start. Most amateurs will touch the live wire to the screwdriver or pliers to the metal part of the switch or some other metal close. The result; a shock or burning of the metal item and the screwdriver and switch.
remove the black wire on the pull chain light and connect it to the white wire running to the switch. connect the black wire running to the switch to the light where you removed the first black wire. turn off the power while you are working on it.
Not sure I understand the question. Do you mean there is just the pull chain and one wire coming to it? Does the light work from the pull chain right now?
Tyrone I as a wife just want to thank you for your video...I think it saved my marriage...lol. You retaught my husband exactly what he needed...he wish we lived closer so he could pay you back. Thanks again.
Good and clear explanation, sir. This has helped me with my recessed lighting project for this weekend as I will have to tap into an outlet for power. Good stuff!
I followed everything on this video. the problem I'm having is when its done the light stays on so when I flip the switch on & off it doesn't do nothing. What the problem I'm having. IM USING A PROCELIAN TO A WIRE MOLD AND I ADDED A SWITCH BECAUSE THERE WAS NO SWITCH BEFORE SO I ADDED A SINGLE POLE TOGGLE SWITCH... I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY MINES NOT WORKING
Don't worry...you did excellent!!!! I'm teaching a course in renewable energy...and my students...(college students)...must watch your videos to ensure they get a grasp on the residential wiring. !!! Keep the good job!!! Thanks
Yes just like others have said, you really expressed and demonstrated the concept and technique well...I think I got it.. Thank you Tyrone...now Foo, I mean Off to see some of your other Videos...!!!
Appreciate you my brother. Installed recessed lighting in my hallway with your help. My wife couldn't be happier and a happy wife = happy life. Respect. -Ken
Very Good presentation. However, you need to add some comments in the beginning that the power is off (breaker is in the off position) before you start handling the wires. Someone out there will be crazy enough to NOT turn off the power. And when you did turn the power on at the end you were handling the bare switch. I would have put the switch in the box and fastened the light base to the box. Safety is key with 110V. It can kill you. Thanks
Nice tutorial. Question: wold there be a potential issue if the outlet is 20 amps with 12 gauge wires? If there's a use case where the outlet wires are putting out i.e 18 amps, would the light wires (14 gauge) get hot 🔥?? Thank you and have a great day.
PS: here is exact scenario Tyrone I took down the old pull chain light there 2 cables 1 from the panel 1 that feeds other receptacles,i added 1 cable to the switch if i tie all the black together and whites together pig tail off for the light works perfect now im left with the problem i have only 1 black and 1 white to deal with and a single pole switch if i put the black on 1 screw and the white on the other screw.......POP goes the breaker.THANKS for your time i appreciate it man!!!
Sorry for the poor question ill try again, the light with a pull chain(works fine) has no switch and i would like to add one, there is only 1 cable (14-2 ) going from the switch to the light,so i cant tie my whites together and connect my 2 blacks because i only have 1 black and 1 white.
Thank you Robertson. I have a question? I have a switch with an outlet but I add a wall lamp and I try to change the switch for a dimmer one model, Skylark Contour Lutron switch and does not work. could you do a tutorial with a dimmer. Thank you for your help.
That was more helpful then other videos but I'm still confused about the part where you put wires to the wall plug. Why is that there? Cant you wire from the breaker panel just to the switch then the light? I will have to hire an electrician I guess. Already got huge shock once and now I'm terrified.
Hello Tyrone, first off thanks for the videos.I have a question,i want to add a switch only, to an existing light (pull chord how would i go about doing it because there is only 1 wire coming from switch to light, Thanks.
I am trying to replace a single pole switch with a GE Smart Switch. I looked in my switch box but the only wires I see are a black, a white (both of which are connected to the two terminals on the right side of the switch) and a bare copper wire. I don't have the second black wire so it must be wired differently. Do you know if this will still work with the Smart Switch?
Thanks hommy saved me $200 for a closet light...didn't even know i could take power from a outlet to it...i thought you need a whole new wire to the circuit board for it.
I learned two things from your video. Make a pigtail for the ground wire. I spent a whole bunch of time and stress trying to get 2 soild core 12 gauge copper wires around that tiny green nut outside in about to rain on me weather. Second thing turn the loop on wire under and screw clockwise. Man that is a pitb when wire pops off tiny screw and you start over. Especially when you here the lady of the house asking if you are almost finished. LOL or Cry out loud. Ha ha.😉
Thanks ever so much Tyrone.I knew there was a way and yes i will shut off the power while working on it,i hate shocks lol.Ill check out your website later on too.Your kindness is appreciated.
Thanks Tyrone....I just finished up installing a switch,but I watched your video first.I don't do it that often,and I need a refresher course everytime I put one in.Son of a gun....it's working!!
Man, I don't care if you forgot some stuff in your video, that helped me immensely, and very well done! I'll be referring to this video again for sure!
I am remodeling a bed and living room and your video helped out. There are many videos out there but I just happen to check out yours. Thanks for tutorial and God Bless.
Hey thanks brother I have a question. How do you run 110 from single pole 30amp breakers to a switch. I can't see you breakers box clearly do you have a video of withing the box?
hello Tyrone this is Christine Bayer again I have a question for you I disconnected a light fixture in the hallway now I kept it off I do not need it now my upstairs lights do not work you think my upstairs electrical is all branched together what can I do what can you do to help me thank you.
Can you please explain how to wire a second light to the first light, all connected to the same switch so that when the switch is turned on, both lights come on?
yes I will send you an image where I took off the light fixture at the hallway ceiling and I replaced it by capping it off thank you for replying so quickly I appreciate if you can help me figure this out again I took out the old light fixture and I kept off the electrical wires and I put the cap on the upstairs electrical wires are all branched together I will get that image to you soon thank you.chris b.
no need to apologize. as a viewer i wouldn't have even known you forgot anything if you had just gotten it while the camera was off. thanks for the video!
I thought according to the diagram it said white wire to bottom screw and black wire to the top but you didn't use a white wire. Can you explain this, please?
one thing i do pigtailing behind outlets i clip the ends of the wires after twisting evenly i tighten a wire nut so they dont shift while twisting other pair i like your videos i think your a bright young man
got a question. I wired a single pole switch. power to switch first. Then it T's to 2 lights. I thought I had followed your video , but now one light goes on and off with the switch, the other is on constantly. What did I do wrong.??

Me too!
I definitely agree

This is probably the best electrical video I've watched on RUclips so far, good stuff man It was very helpful
Loved the "no" and "ffo" comment. Hilarious and enlightening.
LOL thanks Joshua
agreed
8:34 funny stuff.
Lol! True, no "no" and "ffo" for me :)
Till this day since I learned how to do this from this video, every time I install a switch, can’t help but think of “foo and no.” 😊. It’s like a cool mnemonic device.

You do a great job of explaining in a way we DIYers can understand. And the tiny mind-slips you apologized for made me feel better, knowing that even pros sometimes have to stop to get something they forgot. Great video. Thanks!

Nuff respect to B-More. I hope you can do service entrance videos. This is a great series.
Thank you for the kind words and the awesome tip Luis
I really like the way you describe the reasons why you do what you do, instead of just doing it. Very clear video tutorials. Thanks so much!

Old man told me black on brass to save your arss
Wicked vid mate!! Thank you!! Exactly what I needed. Love from Ontario Canada .
Thanks and you are very welcome
Clear, easy instructions. I needed a reminder and this was perfect. Thank you!
If the end of the world ever happens you will get so many views!!! Great tutorial sir!
Good explanation!! Tyrone!!!
Lolol, no and ffo 😂, great vid bro, it helped a lot
Video was spot on brother. I needed to put a light inside my media closet. Everything from A to Z. Just finished about five minutes ago. Thanks so much!!
First time watching your video's I like them. Good learning experiance and I'm 55 years old.
you are welcome Nathan
Great video and very well explained, thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge. Very helpful
Ron Glawe Thanks Ron and you are welcome
Great explanation Tyrone! Using this to add a switch under my staircase working off an outlet.
Thank you!! Finally someone makes videos and explains the process so a non electrician/DIY homeowner can understand. Again thank you for your videos.
switch info good BUT, FIRST THING, you forgot to tell the amateurs to TURN OFF THE BREAKER going to the electric box BEFORE they start. Most amateurs will touch the live wire to the screwdriver or pliers to the metal part of the switch or some other metal close. Great video... Now that the light is on, figuratively, I'm going to fix my mess and hopefully see the light come on, literally.
remove the black wire on the pull chain light and connect it to the white wire running to the switch. connect the black wire running to the switch to the light where you removed the first black wire. turn off the power while you are working on it.
Simple and very helpful, Thanks Tyrone! I love the "No Foo" technique! God bless!
Good explanation T. Keep them coming.
Not sure I understand the question. Do you mean there is just the pull chain and one wire coming to it? Does the light work from the pull chain right now?
run your wire from the existing light to your new light. connect the black and white of your new cable to the black and white of the working light
Instead of adding the pig tail to the ground you can also just shorten one and poke the long end into a cap with a hole.
Thank you, great video! well explained! lcl#3

Thank you. This was exactly detailed enough! I did it in 20 min. Unfortunately, the problem was in the light fixture...
Finally a video that makes sense and shows exactly what i needed to know.
@ 1:00 ...shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried.

One of the better ones I've seen. No Bs, simple, to the point, and step by step. You did well, no apologies necessary!!
its kinda funny that you forgot a couple of this, don't sweat it I do that all the time. THANKS AGAIN!!!!

Thank you very much for providing this. Really clear, understandable and useful.
So you're adding a lighting outlet to the ring main??? What protection does the light circuit have? 30a? Yanks man...you're all gonna die lol!!
Thank you Robertson. I have a question? I have a switch with an outlet but I add a wall lamp and I try to change the switch for a dimmer one model, Skylark Contour Lutron switch and does not work. could you do a tutorial with a dimmer. Thank you for your help.

Thanks Tyrone. Simple enough that I even understood it. Now I can go figure out why my porch light doesn't work.

Thanks Tyrone....I just finished up installing a switch,but I watched your video first.I don't do it that often,and I need a refresher course everytime I put one in.Son of a gun....it's working!!
Thanks for the lesson, and done in such a way I didn't feel stupid for not knowing, Thank you very much sir.
Thats exactly what I was looking for. Thats the exact project im working on. Thanks for sharing.
Man, I don't care if you forgot some stuff in your video, that helped me immensely, and very well done! I'll be referring to this video again for sure!
Awesome. Thank you!! What amp breaker size did you use for the three receptacles?
I am remodeling a bed and living room and your video helped out. There are many videos out there but I just happen to check out yours. Thanks for tutorial and God Bless.
Very helpful video. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and making it easy to understand.

Thanks for the vid very instructional and detail. I am about to tackle this project in my basement. 👍🏽
I thought according to the diagram it said white wire to bottom screw and black wire to the top but you didn't use a white wire. Can you explain this, please?
one thing i do pigtailing behind outlets i clip the ends of the wires after twisting evenly i tighten a wire nut so they dont shift while twisting other pair i like your videos i think your a bright young man
The best video
got a question. I wired a single pole switch. power to switch first. Then it T's to 2 lights. I thought I had followed your video , but now one light goes on and off with the switch, the other is on constantly. What did I do wrong.??

I could be wrong, but isn't the black wire in your drawing opposite of how you installed? Did you mention that the power feed goes unti the bottom of the switch and the light ties into the top of the switch???
No ground?if plastic or no more connection w/ the ground? Thanks for this nice video,I love it man. Nice screw driver.
