Rescuing The Delorean 1932 Ford Roadster From A Dilapidated Detroit Garage

  • A few days before heading south on our Moultrie Georgia trip, Matt was given the opportunity to buy a 1932 Ford Roadster. The only problem is that the car is in Detroit, Michigan and we live about a 10 hour drive away. Matt and some friends load up and head out to drag the roadster home. The Roadster has been in this old tire shop since the mid 1960s and lived most of its life below a 1932 Ford 3 Window Coupe. The Coupe was sold about 7 years ago and the roadster was moved onto the lift. The family was always told the Roadster was purchased from George and John DeLorean in the 1950s. Their father became friends with George at the Detroit Dragway, where he was the announcer. Matt and friends have their work cut out for them as all the parts in, under and around the car came with the purchase of the car. The whole interior is packed with parts, and the trunk is full of 1937 Lassalle transmissions!!! We cant wait to track down more history of this car and hope to return the 1932 Roadster to its former glory!!!

Not to disparage the emotional aspect of the story. Life gets in the way, momentum is lost and years go by... next thing you know deterioration sets in and this is what you are left with. At least you found it when you did, and Iron Trap is the perfect destination for the car to be resurrected.

Man it must have been tough for this guy to help dig out his dad's legacy hot rod. But if anyone can honor this car it's Matt. I think it should be restored to it's glory days with that neat top and killer wires.

How fortunate you intervened before a Developer or fire destroyed it all!
Those cool Chrysler wires were made by Kelsey Hayes, IIRC, and were an option starting in about '54.
Looks like they are still in good shape; hope you will keep them w/ the car. You now have the market
"cornered" on '37 LaSalle trans.! As you know, they were the hot ticket into the early 60s. (I have a '40
long shaft in my '36 coupe; not a great fit!)
Good luck w/ the project. I'll be following this one, for sure!

I'm an old car nut case since high school. My auto mechanic teacher was a hotrodder and made me one. For whatever reason he was not a flathead ford guy, he was chevy. But turned me into a crazed flathead guy. So over the course of 50 years, I collected every flathead racing part in my area. I owned a 50 ford with the V8 in it and hot rodded it till I was 19 years old . Thats when I sold the 50 to a local kid, minus any engine or trans. I bought an R code 1964 galaxy 500 convertible with 427 duel quad four speed. I have now owned it for 46 years and have been restoring it for the past 25 years. Its ALWAYS been kept inside and just like it says above, life just happens and nothing gets done. The chassie is all new and completed, body 85% or more done, new top. original interior. runs and drives. Just not done.....I still love my flathead parts, they are not for sale. They will soon hang in my new shop. I have Offenhouser, Edmonds, Gran-Cor, and an original Edelbrock slingshot manifold. I have heads and manifolds to match. And I think there is an Edmonds manifold still new in its original box..... I have the chance to buy my old 50 back after 47 years of having it gone. Not sure I really need it back, I think it would be a waste of money, to just let it set around. It was a four door, I shaved off the rear door handles to make it look more two door....but do I really need it back. Let me know what you guys think. Its only 1,500 dollars, but just to let it set?.... Not really interested in having to work on it. It would be neat to have it back, but why? So my main comment is why would anyone let a car like in this video, sit in a garage with a roof YOU KNOW LEAKS with this wonderful car you claim to love and just let it ROT to nothing!! I have known many a man over the years with fantastic cars that were just left outside in the dirt to rot into the ground where there is no hope to repair it with the skill set the owner has to repair it. And the comment, SOMEDAY I'm gonna make it new....NO YOUR NOT!!!! You will NEVER make it new......So SELL IT TO SOMEONE WHO WILL!!! But not till your dead and the car is scrap.....Drives me crazy!!!! At least my 64 has always been in semi heated buildings with no leaks.....And yes I'm slow too, but atleast its not rotting while Im being slow! Thanks for reading my rant......

Glad you recovered the roadster before the wiring finally "gave up the ghost" and made everything toast. Hope this one will always reside in an old airplane hanger in PA!

I got a friend (imagine that), who has been working on the same car for decades. Whenever there was a show he rode shotgun in my coupe. I think Mike will always have a ride because Matt will take good care of him!

I was trying to come up with a wordy comment that explained the feeling I had when I saw this car being uncovered...but one word comes to mind that explains it all.
