Basically, this is what the survivors would have seen from the lifeboats. Because of how dark the night was, basically, the entire ship was a basically a shadow in the middle of the horizon that nobody could easily pick out. Obviously, the black hull, the lack of light, and the confusion was why most of the survivors found it hard, or were unable to see the ship split in half. But James Cameron obviously had to do this. You wouldn't want to be looking at a dark screen for about 1 hour with tons of screaming and loud background noises, right?
