Richter gave his best in London. No wait, it was in Moscow. No, in Leningrad. In New York. In Budapest. In Prague. In Munich. Throughout Italy. In France. In Japan. And in tiny villages in the Soviet Union, nearly forgotten places. Who can say? Every performance is a miracle. How fortunate the people who heard him LIVE. And how fortunate are we that technology brings him to us--from the grave!--today. Thank you, Sviatoslav!

Not every performance of his is a miracle. Some are riddled with mistakes.

@@danal81 OK, you're right. But the number of his truly miraculous performances--over a period of five decades--is astonishing. And it is also amazing that so many of these were recorded. Of course there are mistakes in live performances, but in my opinion there is also more Life in the live ones than in the studio recordings.

Agreed. And when he's good, he's REALLY good, a truly unique talent.@@jamesnickoloff6692

I had the great pleasure of hearing Richter perform live twice, once in Chicago and once in Washington, D.C. Both were tremendous experiences.

This is just extraordinarily wonderful. The slow movement has to be one of Beethoven's finest achievements and it is played here with such intensity, unbelievable control of all the layers and indescribably beautiful tone. This is both perfomer and composer at their best; a meeting of heart and mind in complete balance. Thank you so very much for posting this marvel.
