My FLGS had this on preorder for a little over $100 USD. Ridiculous. Looks like the sort of game you can get for $30 at Barnes and Noble and not even with the hard cardboard box or insert. Hopefully I can find this someplace else for cheap in the future.
I can see $50 or $60 but as someone that buys big boardgames, this is no where near the quality just in components to justify $100. Its really disappointing.

Its definitely a weird price point, but it also seems to be very limited. It's the kind of game I would love to see them support, but I don't think they will. Especially after the way they "supported" Cursed City (though that had its own issues).

Your enthusiasm at the end is really cool. I think cooperative games can be easier to get people to play, and there is no risk of one person understanding the rules/strategy better causing an unfair game. I agree with others that it is somewhat expensive. It makes sense when GW sells boxes of 10 models for $50, but I was kind of expecting a discount because of it being a board game. That being said it looks like a fun experience. Cheers

Oh man, a 40k version of Underworlds would be AMAZING. I think I’ll try Darktide, but the price and the laziness with the mixed-mold types/molds from existing sets really makes me pause first.
Ive returned to the hobby recently after 32 years away (40k 1st ed and epic SM were my jam way back). Ive only been painting and swatting up on the lore, but ordered this today as a gateway, learning the ropes of getting back into gaming.
I’m so glad you’re excited about it - I am too. I play the Space Marine Adventures Doomsday Countdown solo play game at home semi-regularly and over time have customised it a bunch. I’ve had great fun with it but it’s got a little old now due to the lack of variety in missions (outside of the randomised board) and no expansions… so I’m all in for this! A new casual solo play game in the 40k universe I can play of an evening? Yes please. As a Kill Team player as well it’s nice to see it being used as an on ramp for KT as well. Hopefully shows GW knows KT is a game that has staying power now. I really hope with this one like you said we get some expansion content. White Dwarf would be perfect!
To be fair those boxes came with 5 or so models, and cardboard counters for the enemies, while this comes with four times the figures and roughly the same amount of cardboard.

This one seems to be more like a limited release :( Another GW's board game comes to mind: LOTR's Battle in Balin's Tomb. I think the quality of the components, hard cardboard box, 22 old plastic miniatures was good. A single scenario, though. $75US for a limited run of games produced. Thanks for the review Ash! This sounds like the style of game I actually wanted instead of kill team. Fast setup and tear down for a casual coop game night, sounds close enough to just steal kill team rules to expand it in places, etc.
I like the concept may pick it up. I do however think the price point is a bit too high to be a blockbuster bring people in box it wants to be. That being said I am a sucker for these adventure quest games and If they keep releasing expansions I am likely in.
Love the video game, I have most of the models and have always wanted to make a custom/house rules game style. Cool that they mixed Underworlds and Killteam together, I'll probably go for a Necromunda style. Cheers for the review Ash 💪😊
I remember your GMG review about the new Kill Team being great for the people who are already into Kill Team. This is that gateway to Kill Team for the casual player, which is then the way you get someone to combat patrol and a 1K army. Good leveling up in my opinion, because GW is missing a good dungeon crawl.
I never get a price list with any of the kits workshop sends to review. If it’s marked on the box I always mention it; but workshop never prints MSRP on their packaging.
I get my copy in a few days time, can't wait. I am planning on doing some custom rules for a Beast of Nurgle, Chaos Ogryn, and Daemonhost. Otherwise, I really hope that they expand on this game, because its not a Barnes and Noble exclusive.

Some of the GW boxed games are great fun! I doubt the pricepoint here though as a boardgamer. IF it was a faction I like (when that box comes out) might seem more useful to me personally.
Totally agree this is a great way to have a starter,fun kitchen table game. Just keep it expanding and it'd be gangbusters. Proper old fashioned Warhammer quest, but 40k would be mental

Are the 10 traitor guardsmen to be built as x3 Troopers, Commsman, Gunner, Grenade launcher, Flamer, Sharpshooter and a Chieftain? Also how is the gunner to be built? Plasma or Melta? Looking to get ahead of the game with existing models owned.
Very interested to see how this plays, the price tag and lack of unique models is a bummer, but if the gameplay is interesting might consider picking up as I've had my eye on the traitor guard already

Great review Ash. I think the game looks solid, but based on the way GW has been recently, i just dont see it hetting retail support. Hopefully at least something in White Dwarf. Also, yes. I've wanted a 40k "Underworlds" for years. Especially if they made some tweaks (like maybe ditch the universal cards?). As you said, unique "hero" models to the level of the underworlds sculpts, but in 40k? It would basically print money for them. Its also just a solid system that got a bit bloated for me past season 4.

But at this price neither of them will buy it. Hell, it would be cheaper to just buy the actual video game. And for hardcore 40k fans? Many of them probably already own 50% - 80% of the miniatures included. So why pay $100+ to buy generic rules and some cardboard and cards? At least make all original, game inspired sculpts if you're going to charge such a ridiculous price and try to justify it as a collector's item. I agree with Ash that an expanding game like this, set in the 40k universe, would be great. But at the price GW is selling it at? It's not going to happen. Maybe... MAYBE... this gets one or two expansions. But I doubt it. This has "one shot" written all over it. I'll be waiting to see it discounted on Amzon before I even think about buying this. And that's a shame.

Here's my issues with this game: 1) Extremely poor timing. I've been playing Darktide since beta, I have 195 hours in the game. I know it quite well, and I know its community. Darktide is on its last legs. It has lost a huge amount of market share to the phenomenon that is Helldivers 2, and a GW branded game will likely not gain that market share back until Space Marine 2 comes out. After that, Darktide is as good as dead. If you need details as to why, I'm happy to add those, but there are multiple factors coming together that support my statement. If GW had better timed this release for when the game released, or when their big skill tree update happened which made interest in the game explode and brought a bunch of people back, this tabletop/board game would have been far better received. 2) Little to no advertising. How, as a huge fan of the PC game, did I literally not know this was in the works or coming out until a week ago? What kind of pathetic excuse for hype and advertising was that? This should have been on the lips and minds of darktide players for months at this point. However, I think the reason why this was not the case was that GW either does not care, or there are literal detached morons in their marketing department. 3) No new models. I literally own all of the models that come in this game, why would I buy this? Who is this being marketed towards? I don't know, because they didn't do any advertising. Who the heck are they trying to sell this to? Doesn't seem to be me. 4) It's too little too late. For reasons stated in point 1, the Darktide PC game is dying, and FatShark nor GW care to save it because Space Marine 2 is on the way. If this was an effort to create hype around the "Darktide" trademark/property in general, its too late for that. Helldivers 2 already stole the vast majority of market share that would be playing the Darktide PC right now because Helldivers 2 is very simply a better game. Sure its not a Warhammer 40k game, but its a better game, and its close enough for enough people to not care. Ash, I get where your excitement is coming from, because you see something raw that you mold and make your own. You haven't put nearly 200 hours into the PC game to where your view of this release is colored the same bias I have, which is skepticism. The Darktide PC has been so poorly handled in the past 3-4 months that I've completely lost interest, and I'm not just skeptical that GW will support this game, I'm also skeptical that this products conception was really anything more than a convenient cash grab. This product is literally a bundle of recycled pieces, it uses a weird mix kill team and underworlds rules, recycled models (that look nothing like the game characters), and a recycled IP.
Aren't Silver Tower+, Blackstone Fortress+ & Cursed City co-operative GW games? I'm confused about your vision of this simple lil 'boxed game'. I can only think there's a conflation of your vision for a DT game from a few years back & the actuality of this game. & yes, that it's a better co-operative game than the Warhammer Quest series of games. & what this co-operative game has in common with the Versus games of Underworlds. Not meaning to be an asshat. Just generally not understanding the utmost allure this has on you.
At the $40-$50 Barnes & Noble price point, it'd be a must buy. As it stands, I get buyer's remorse just looking at it.

This looks like gloomhaven ‘lite’ for 40k. It also seems like a game that is great for solo play. Despite the price, I’m pretty intrigued now.

I'm confused about your vision of this simple lil 'boxed game'. I can only think there's a conflation of your vision for a DT game from a few years back & the actuality of this game.
& yes, that it's a better co-operative game than the Warhammer Quest series of games.
& what this co-operative game has in common with the Versus games of Underworlds.
Not meaning to be an asshat. Just generally not understanding the utmost allure this has on you.
