Donnie Yen deserved better! I'd like to think though he was definitely caught off guard and sucker punched. We saw his skill in the previous fight scene. Had he saw that coming and been in an open room, it wouldn't have happened. Instead it was the opposite. Closed off narrow hallway, with a huge beast of a vampire/reaper who just turned randomly literally right behind him. Who apprently still had some brain power and used his hammer on him......Tough way to go.
For all those saying Donnie Yen got done dirty, dude is a busy man, he had like 3 other jobs he was doing at the time and had to leave due to scheduling conflicts, hence why he got killed OFF SCREEN meaning you dont actually see his face in the death scene, hence why it was dark and moody, he did his time with this project and we all loved it, but the man's gotta WORK!!!!..

IIRC the Reapers have two fangs that inject neurotoxin into their victims, to paralyze them while they feed. Priest was bitten with both the tongue (which injects the virus) and the fangs, while Lighthammer was only bitten by the tongue. It is possible that the neurotoxin accelerates the spread of the virus. Another possibility is that Lighthammer wasn’t bitten for a long time and didn’t as much of the virus injected into him, compared to Priest who had a Reaper feeding on him for several minutes.

Donnie Yen's main job for Blade 2 was to do the fight choreography, his on-screen role was merely a cameo.
